Launiere, who led her team to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including trips to the Sweet 16 in 2001 and 2008, in 20 seasons as head coach of the Utes, will help the 2008 Olympic Games silver medalist Team USA compete against a field of 12 national teams playing a total of 69 matches over four consecutive weekends in 10 world-wide cities. Team USA’s preliminary rounds are set to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the first weekend, Li Miao, Chinese Taipei during the second weekend and Bangkok, Thailand over the third weekend.
“I feel fortunate to have this opportunity to work with Hugh McCutcheon and Karch Kiraly as well as some of the top players in our country,” Launiere said. “I look forward to helping the team in any way I can and bringing back the international experience gained from this tournament to the Utah volleyball program.”
Launiere and the US National team will begin the tournament at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of Pool A. The Americans will open against Germany on July 31 and Puerto Rico on Aug. 1. They will play the featured match of the preliminary round on Aug. 2 as Team USA takes on host and 2008 Olympic Games gold medalist Brazil.

Indiana State has longest active Division I streak at 11 straight years
LEXINGTON, KY. – The Indiana State University volleyball program extended the longest active streak in NCAA Division I Tuesday with the announcement that the Sycamores have earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2008-2009 season.
“This is a tremendous honor for our team,” Traci Dahl, Indiana State volleyball coach, said. “To receive the Team Academic Award is an accomplishment in itself but to earn the award for 11 straight years speaks to the quality of the student-athletes that are or have been a part of Sycamore volleyball and their dedication to succeeding both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.”
The award was initiated in the 1992-1993 academic year to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the academic year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
A record number of 409 teams received the Team Academic Award. NCAA Division I once again had 71 schools receiving the award for academic achievements. NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III surpassed their marks from last year with 46 and 77 schools, respectively.
The NAIA had 35 of its member schools achieve the honor this year, which is 21 percent of its total membership for 2008-2009. Nine schools in the two-year college category attained the mark while the NCCAA produced two recipients.
The NCAA men’s programs produced multiple recipients of the award this year, with two Division I schools and another two Division III schools earning the award. A total of 165 high school boys’ and girls’ programs – 17 boys’ teams and 148 girls’ teams – earned the award in 2008-2009.
“Each year I’m impressed all over again by the academic prowess of volleyball players,” Kathy DeBoer, AVCA Executive Director, said. “Total AVCA Team Academic Award winners increased this year by another 55 schools (15 percent) over last year’s record, and, even more impressive, 22 percent of our four-year college teams had grade point averages of 3.2 or better.”
Over 900 different schools have earned the award in the program’s 17-year history, and over 2,800 awards have been given out. Only two institutions, both high schools, have earned the distinction all 17 years: Jonesboro High School (Jonesboro, Ark.) and Ross S. Sterling High School (Baytown, Tex.).
Drury University has the longest streak in NCAA Division II with 13 straight while the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has the longest in NCAA Division III with eight. The College of St. Mary (Neb.) has the longest NAIA streak at 15, which is also the longest overall in the nation.
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the fifth time in the past six seasons, the AVCA announced Tuesday.
First instituted in 1992, the AVCA Team Academic Award goes to collegiate and high school volleyball programs that maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.00 for the academic year, a mark that Duke has maintained in each of the past three seasons. Duke also received the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 academic years.
Duke was one of 71 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball programs to receive the honor this season and one of 409 teams overall. The 409 awards were the most in the 17-year history of the AVCA Team Academic Award.

Stony Brook, N.Y. (July 13, 2009) – Stony Brook University’s volleyball team solidified its 2009 roster with the signing of transfer swing hitter Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.). A former volleyball and basketball standout at John Glenn High School, Calinda spent the last three seasons playing for Hofstra, leading the Pride in kills and digs last season.
“We’re extremely excited to have her,” said head coach Deborah Matejka-DesLauriers. “Having lost junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) to Tommy John surgery this spring, Harmonie is a huge addition for us. She adds an experienced and competitive dynamic to our team right away.”
Calinda led her high school volleyball team to five Suffolk County championships, four Long Island championships and to 2003 and 2004 New York State championships while being named to the 2004 Prep Volleyball All-America team and four All-New York State teams. On the basketball court she was the 2005 New York State Class B and Suffolk County Player of the Year in basketball after leading Glenn to a 29-0 record and its first state and federation championship. She was also a McDonald’s All-America nominee as a senior.

The final three days of the camp will feature day long clinics including a setter/hitter clinic on Wednesday, multi-skills camp on Thursday, and a serving clinic on Friday.
Registration for each clinic is held a half hour before each clinic begins. Athletes who would like to attend any of the clinics, and who have not registered as yet, can attend by coming to the ISU Arena and registering before the start of the clinic.
