Georgia State Volleyball Rolls Past Chicago State in Three Sets
Chicago, Ill. - The Georgia State volleyball team concluded a four-day
trip to Chicago with a three set sweep over Chicago State on Sunday
afternoon at the Dickens Center. Junior Ashley Jones and
redshirt-sophomore Vineece Verdun led the Panthers with eight kills
apiece.
The Panthers never were in danger of losing the match after hitting
.379 to take the first set, 25-14. After taking the second set by the
same score, the State earned an impressive 81 percent side-out
percentage in the third set to roll to a 25-10 win.
To go along with her eight kills, Jones scored seven assists and
finished with 11 digs. The reigning CAA co-Offensive Player of the Week
hit .333 for the match and also added a pair of service aces.
Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell, who moved into the top ten in school
history in digs on Saturday, grabbed 16 more on Sunday to move over 800
for her career.
Sophomore Chelsea Perry returned to form with 22 assists and tied a
career high with five aces, while fellow sophomore Muki Kangwa added
seven kills with no errors and a .500 hitting percentage in the win.
Junior Rachel Boryc, a Naperville, Ill. native, scored five kills and
three digs in her final match before a large contingent of family and
friends.
The Panthers hit .266 for the match, while holding Chicago State to a
-.077 hitting percentage as the Cougars fell to 0-10 on the season.
Brittany Hale led Chicago State with four kills and five digs.
The Panthers will return to action next weekend with their final
tournament of the season, the Elon Invitational. State will take on Navy
on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., with match-ups against the host
Phoenix and Norfolk State on Saturday.
Georgia State will open CAA play the following weekend as UNC
Wilmington travels to Atlanta on September 26th for the annual Dig for a
Cure match against the Seahawks. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
