DES MOINES, IOWA – The Drake volleyball team dropped its third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference match with a 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 23-25) loss to No. 25 Wichita State Saturday.
“Wichita State is a very solid team and they don’t make many mistakes,” said Drake head coach Phil McDaniel. “We pushed them tonight but we couldn’t get over the hump.”
Senior setter Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) had a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs for the Bulldogs, who move to 11-7 overall, including a 2-3 league mark.
Junior outside hitter Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) had a team-high nine kills and .389 attack percentage. Junior middle blocker Nicole Brown (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) tied a season-high with four blocks.
Redshirt freshman Emily Heffernen (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware) and sophomore outside hitter Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East) added eight kills apiece for Drake,
Junior libero Alana Wittenburg (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) had a team-leading 13 digs and sophomore setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore Community) added 11 assists and eight digs.
"I like how we played defense tonight,” noted McDaniel. “We dug a lot of ball that should have hit the floor and we had a balance of several players bringing intensity of defense.”
Wichita State held an advantage in kills (48-37), attack percentage (.319-.164), assists (47-34), digs (64-55) and blocks (7-6). Each team had three service aces.
The Shockers, who improve to 12-3 (2-2 MVC), had four players in double-digit kills and three in double-digit digs.
The Bulldogs host South Dakota State Wednesday (Oct. 7) in a 7 p.m. match.
