Colonels Volleyball Team Rallies Past Tigers in Five-Set Thriller
"We're very fortunate to come away with a win tonight," head coach Chris Laird said. "It was good to see us play so well after we got in a 2-0 hole, but we need to do a better job and not put ourselves in that position."
Jackson State started strong with a .429 team hitting percentage in the opening set en route to a 25-23 win. The second set saw more of the same as the Tigers took advantage of a .119 Nicholls' team hitting percentage en route to a 25-20 win.
Down 2-0, the Colonels finally answered back in the third. In a set that saw 15 tie scores and five lead changes, the Colonels held on for a 25-22 win. Golden had three kills, senior Rachel Spreen added three more and Nicholls totaled four blocks to keep the Tiger offense at bay and force a fourth set.
The Colonels would not trail the rest of the match as Nicholls picked up steam in the fourth set. Golden totaled 7 kills, freshman outside hitter Jennifer Brandt was perfect on her three attempts and the Colonels hit .455 as a team en route to a 25-14 win to force a fifth and final set.
Nicholls maintained control from start to finish in the final frame by opening the set with a 7-0 run. Harris and Golden each had three kills in the fifth as the Colonels rolled to a 15-3 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
The Colonels will be back in action when they return to conference play by hosting Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin on Friday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Stopher Gym. Admission is free to all Nicholls students with a valid ID and all children age five and under.
