THIBODAUX - After a hard-fought five-set loss on the road to one of the strongest teams in the conference, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team (9-11, 3-3 Southland Conference) will try to rebound against another conference power.
The Colonels return home to host Southland West Division leader Sam Houston State (14-10, 6-1 Southland) as part of NCAA Volleyball's annual Dig Pink event benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
Nicholls will look to get back above .500 in conference play, but the Colonels will face a stiff challenge from the Bearkats. Sam Houston enters the match having won six consecutive matches and eight of their last nine.
However, the Colonels will look to win their fourth straight home match on the strength of one of the top offenses in the Southland Conference. Nicholls ranks fourth in the conference with a .193 team hitting percentage and senior Amy Beshir is second in the league with a .345 mark.
On defense, sophomore libero Danielle Daigle enters the weekend maintaining second place in the Southland with a 4.23 dig/set average and freshman middle blocker Jasmine Harris has led a resurgent blocking game with a team-high 62 total blocks (5 BS, 57 BA, 0.84 blocks/set).
First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Stopher Gym. Admission is free for all Nicholls students with valid IDs and all children age five and under.
The Colonels will also be participating in NCAA's Dig Pink benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. Organized by the Side-Out Foundation, over 800 high schools and colleges across the country are participating in the event. Dig for the Cure has already raised over $130,000 towards their goal of $700,000 in this year's campaign.
Nicholls will be selling t-shirts for ten dollars each, collecting dontations and showing support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink. Fans interested in finding more details, or making a donation of their own should visit the Side-Out Foundation's website at http://www.side-out.org/
