SCOUTING THE MASTODONS: The IPFW Mastodons are heading to their first-ever NCAA Division I National Tournament after snapping the 20-match home win streak of North Dakota State in five sets on Saturday, November 21. This is the fifth time IPFW has advanced to the NCAA
Tournament, the first five as members of NCAA Division II, going 1-4 in those contests.
Leading the way this season for IPFW was Summit League Tournament MVP Rebekah Roehm,
who has 460 kills this season, an average of 3.93 per set. Roehm was also honored the night before
the tournament started with a First Team All-Summit League designation. Maya Schlindwein,
who was named Second Team All-Summit League, and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament
Team, is second on the team this year with 313 kills, as Stephanie Lambertei has totaled 221.
Jamie Schwartz, IPFW’s third and final member on the All-Tournament Team, has 504 digs this
season, fourth highest in a single season in school history, and with her second of the next game,
will move into sole possession of third place overall. Roehm is second on the team with 336 digs,
and with her 11th of the match against North Dakota State, she became the seventh member of
the school’s 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club (for a list of the entire group, see page six of this notes
package). Tessa McGill has added 295 digs, and Schlindwein 262, giving the Mastodons four
players with over 200, and two more with over 100 (Megan Steenhuysen, 172; Shannon Reuter,
155).
Taryn Parker and Alli Hook each have over 100 blocks on the season, with Parker, a junior,
leading the pair with 122. Hook, a sophomore, has 103, as Schlindwein is third on the team with
75. Freshman Steenhuysen leads the team in assists with 661, as Reuter, in her last go-round
with the team, has 522. Schlindwein paces IPFW with 41 service aces, with McGill and Roehm
battling it out for second place on the squad with 26 and 23, respectively.
IPFW ONLY PLEASE...
Many media outlets have incorrectly referred
to IPFW as “IU-PU Fort Wayne” - please be
advised that this is incorrect. The correct reference
is IPFW when referring to the school’s
athletic teams.
LOFTY EXPECTATIONS...
For the second consecutive year, the IPFW Mastodons were picked to finish second in the Summit League. Defending champion North Dakota State was picked as the preseason favorite by the coaches, garnering nine of the ten first-place votes and totaling
81 overall points, with IPFW getting the tenth and final first-place vote, and 70 points
overall. In the Mastodons’ three years in the Summit League, they have been picked first in
2007, second in 2008 and now again second in 2009.
FIRST WINS...
Coming into the season for IPFW, there were three opponents that IPFW had never beaten in the
history of the program, and IPFW is 3-0 against those teams. Kent State, which was 2-0 against
IPFW previously, fell in four sets during the IPFW Invitational, and Western Michigan, who was 3-0
against the ‘Dons, fell in a thrilling five-set match on September 15, 2009. The final piece of the
puzzle came on Sunday, October 25 when the ‘Dons topped Missouri State 3-2, avenging the
only other previous game of the series. Conversely, there is just one school that IPFW has never
lost to, Centenary (5-0).
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER
OF THE SCHWARTZ...
With her 10 digs against Eastern Michigan, IPFW senior Jamie Schwartz joined a very prestigious
group in IPFW women’s volleyball history - the 1,000-dig club. Her 1,399 career digs currently
places her fourth all-time during the Mastodons’ rally-scoring era, and sixth in the all-era record
books.
SUPER SMART...
The IPFW women’s volleyball team was named one of just 71 NCAA Division I programs to earn
the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Mastodons
were joined by three other Summit League schools, North Dakota State, UMKC, and Western
Illinois, and just one of four schools (Valparaiso, Ball State, and Indiana State) located in the Hoosier State. Additionally, the squad had nine players (Jessica Dominiak, Kylee Hervey, Stephanie
Lamberti, Jessica Miller, Taryn Parker, Shannon Reuter, Rebekah Roehm, Maya Schlindwein, and
Jamie Schwartz) named to the Summit League’s Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence for
the 2008-09 academic year.
HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER...
Sophomore Alli Hook saw her career-bests in kills and blocks tied or broken in each of IPFW’s four
matches. She came into the year with career highs of 2 kills and did not have a block coming
into the season. She tied her career kill total against Eastern Illinois, and then topped it with
three against Butler, and then broke it and tied it again with four against both Kent State and
Drake. She had her first career block against Eastern Illinois, and then followed with four
against Butler, and then had six against both Kent State and Drake. Her strong sophomore season
continued, as she blocked a school-record-tying 11 kill attempts in IPFW’s three-set victory over
Centenary on September 26, and then topped her career high kill total with 12 against Western Illinois on October 9.
REC0RD SETTING DAY
Against Oakland, a pair of IPFW student-athletes put up performances that will long be remembered in the school and conference record books. Seniors Jamie Schwartz and Rebekah
Roehm each set single match school records, and put their names into the Summit League
Record book in the process. Schwartz had a school-record 43 digs in
the five-set victory over Oakland, topping the previous five-set school record set by Peachy
Jankowski, and the overall dig record, also previously held by Jankowski. The total is also the
second highest dig total in Summit League history. Roehm had a conference- and school-record
94 attack attempts, topping each record by a significant margin, while pounding down 27
kills in the process, a top-10 all-time mark for IPFW, and the most in a match in the Summit
League this season.
LONG TRIP
IPFW’s road trip to Cedar City, Utah and to Kansas City, Missouri, is the second longest trip
in the Summit League (only behind Oakland’s same trip). If fans wanted to make the road trip
driving from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Cedar City, Utah, according to MapQuest.com, you would
be on the road for a minute shy of 26 hours, driving 1,724 miles, passing through six states
(Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, and Utah), and the one-way trip — if you have a car
that gets 30 miles to the gallon — would cost you $146.17 in gas alone. The return trip, from
Cedar City, by way of Kansas City, Missouri, for Saturday night’s match against UMKC, and then
back to Fort Wayne is 1,794 miles long, would take 27 hours and 11 minutes, and would cost
$152.02, while adding two more states to your journey (Kansas and Missouri). Thankfully, the
team flew out of Fort Wayne, greatly shortening the time en route to the contests.
BIG-GAME FRESHMAN
Prior to this season, in the entire history of the volleyball program, just one freshman in school
history has had two matches of 20 or more digs in the same season, and that was the school’s
single season, and career dig leader, Peachy Jankowski. After having her individual dig record
broken earlier this year, she was joined in this category as well, as Muncie Central graduate Tessa McGill, with her 22-dig effort against IUPUI, became the second member of
that exclusive group, following her career-high 24-dig night against Oakland. The 24 digs are
the second most in a match by a freshman, behind just the 26 that Melissa Meinhart dug up
against Oakland on October 6, 2001.
CAN YOU DIG THIS STREAK?
In the course of college volleyball’s rally-scoring era (2001-present), there have been 15 streaks at IPFW with players recording double-figure digs in seven or more straight matches. Senior Jamie Schwartz added her name to the list, by ending the season last year, and then picking up double-figure digs over the first six games of the 2008 season, only to see her streak
snapped at seven with seven digs against Louisville. After seeing her streak snapped against the Cardinals, she started a new one, which was stopped at 15 straight matches. Below are the top 15 IPFW dig streaks since 2001 for the Mastodons.
