Penn State Volleyball Players Megan Hodge, Alisha Glass Make Impact on 

U.S. Women’s National Team

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Feb. 3, 2010 – Penn State women’s volleyball seniors Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) and Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) competed with the U.S. Women’s National Team on Tuesday, Feb. 3 in a training trip to China. The Evergrande Volleyball Club dealt Team USA a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-19) loss in an exhibition match in Guangzhou Gymnasium in Guangzhou, China.

Hodge led the U.S. women with 15 points all on kills, as well as nine digs. Glass contributed a kill, block and an ace as the starting setter. Head coach Hugh McCutcheon started Hodge at outside hitter.

The Penn State pair competed against former Nittany Lion Christa Harmotto who is one of two members of the U.S. Women’s National Team on the Evergrande roster. Harmotto tallied 10 points in the match. She had seven kills on 13 swings with two errors on .385 hitting and put up three blocks.

Glass and Hodge guided the Nittany Lion women’s volleyball team to an unprecedented third straight NCAA title in 2009, while Harmotto was part of the 2007 and 2008 championship teams. Glass and Hodge finished their Penn State careers with a 142-5 win/loss record at Penn State to be the winningest graduating class in program history.

Rice Volleyball Player Meredith Schamun Named National Setter of the Year

The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) has announced Rice volleyball player Meredith Schamun as it 2009 National Setter of the Year. 

A junior from Murrieta, Calif., Schamun led Conference USA in assists on her way to earning Conference USA co-Setter of the Year honors. She finished fifth nationally as she averaged 11.95 assists per set, while Rice was ranked No. 3 in kills per set. Schamun was also selected to the All-Conference USA First Team. 

Additionally, the 5' 11" setter tied for the team lead in double-doubles with 11 as she averaged 2.38 digs per set. She added to that nearly a kill (0.93) and almost a half of a block (0.46). 

Schamun's 1,374 assists in 2009 is the fifth-highest total at Rice. In only three seasons of action, she already ranks third on the Rice career assists list with 3,988 assists. 

Schamun earned C-USA Setter of the Week honors four times during the 2009 season, and was also named the CVU National Player of the Week after leading Rice to upsets over Southern Miss and Tulsa to claim the conference tournament title, where she was named Conference USA Championship MVP. 

Last season Schamun was also honored among CVU's Top Five setters. 

Rice, under sixth-year head coach Genny Volpe, posted a 23-9 record in 2009 and won its first-ever Conference USA Volleyball Championship. The Owls also played in the NCAA Championship for the second-consecutive year and third time overall. 2010 looks to be just as promising as Rice returns three starters from the 2009 squad including All-Conference USA First Team players, Schamun, senior Tracey Lam, and sophomore Ashleigh McCord, the squad's top outside hitter at 3.92 kills per set.

FIU Volleyball Player Jovana Bjelica Recognized as CVU.com Rising Star

The All-American is one of 19 freshmen to be selected nationwide

 

 

MIAMI – FIU freshman Jovana Bjelica has been recognized by The College Volleyball Update on its Rising Star roster, announced on Wednesday by CVU.com

 

Bjelica is one of 19 freshmen across the nation selected to the list and is the only representative from the Sun Belt Conference.

 

To be considered as a CVU.com Rising Star, a student-athlete must have played in 50 percent or more of her team’s overall games. The selections were made based upon individual performance, contributions to the team and potential future impact.

 

Bjelica enjoyed a stellar freshman campaign in 2009, becoming one of three FIU volleyball players to earn AVCA All-America honors at season’s end. She joined senior Yarimar Rosa and junior Natalia Valentin as the first trio in FIU volleyball history to garner All-America accolades.

A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Bjelica registered 10 double-doubles (kills-digs) and reached double-digits in kills in 20 of 32 matches played. The outside hitter ranked second on the team in service aces (25) and third in kills (344), digs (249) and total blocks (57), and, in the final Sun Belt Conference regular season statistics, she was the only freshman ranked in the top 10 in two categories, ranking sixth in kills per set (3.41) and seventh in points per set (3.96).

 

Bjelica was named the SBC Freshman of the Year and was also a second-team all-league honoree and an honorable mention All-South Region pick.

 

FIU ended the 2009 season, setting a school record for wins with an overall record of 32-4. Heading into NCAA Tournament play, FIU was one of three schools in the country to have won 30 or more matches along with Penn State (32) and Northern Iowa (30). The Panthers won their second straight Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship in 2009 and put together a 23-match win streak, which, at the time, was the fourth-longest such streak in the country.

For many people its hard to imagine how, after achieving sporting goals including Gold, that athletes could ever be unhappy. What is often the highlight in an athletes career can also mark the beginning of the lowest point as an athlete comes to grips with a life where the rewards are not so significant. 

The road to sporting success is paved with exhilarating highs and devastating lows. This can be particularly strong in Olympic sports where so much focus is put into an event that occurs only every four years For most of their life, potential Olympians are singularly focused, nothing else matters but getting that Gold Medal. There is often not a next time, there is only one time; it is a one shot deal with their entire careers on the line. Not everyone can win Gold on the big day.

Athletes are regarded as Gods. We place the hope of the nation on their success and they are faced with enormous pressures to not let their country down. That moment is the height of the career where they are treated like Gods on the Mount of Olympus playing for the fate of their kingdom. When they win the gold we treat them like celebrities; we throw them parties, we put their faces on cereal boxes but eventually life returns back to normal.

But just what is normal when sport is over? And how do you return to it when youve just been treated like a God?

Depression among athletes, upon retirement, is a well-recognised problem and can be accentuated by disappointing results or a career prematurely ended by injury. Few athletes consider life after sport. In fact, in the normal world most athletes are strangers. They have given up normalcy for the chance to live the dream. Everyday tasks we take for granted have been traded in for training.

When sport is over, that is the end of a lifetime of ambition. Even winning the gold can be correlated to a low in an athletes career because there is nowhere left to go- there is nothing left to achieve. Life as that athlete knew it- is over.

Many successful athletes suffer from depression because of the inability to transition to a more normal lifestyle. In March of 2009, Olympic Gold Medalist, Australian Diver, Chantelle Newbury checked herself into a Psychiatric Hospital after she made her second suicide attempt. By all standards she is a monumental success having earned her country a Gold Medal, yet she has no life balance. 

In April, Jobie Dakja, an Olympic cyclist took his own life unable to cope with the depression and the struggle after being expelled from the Athens Olympics and then suspended from his cycling, his lifes passion.

Depression is not limited to life after sport with cases of several experiencing depression through their sporting career. Some of it is psychological and some of it is chemical with overtraining linked to depression. Concussion has also been shown to increase incidence of depression, a problem for contact sports such as football and ice hockey.

Perhaps what makes it worse for athletes is that there is an expectation that everything is wonderful in the life of sport. There are accolades and special privileges, but for some this can cause psychological pressure. Andrew Johns is an Australian football player that found the pressure of celebrity overwhelming leading to drug abuse and depression.

Adding to the problem is that athletes often do not seek out help, preferring to put on a brave face than show signs of weakness. Olympic swimming champion, Petria Thomas, felt hopeless and had lost her passion and focus prior to winning her first Olympic medal back in 1996. With pain in her shoulders, Thomas declared In a sense, swimming is all I felt like I had in my life.

This one-side devotion to sport can both be the cause of their greatest success and their downfall. Though there are many factors contributing to an athletes mental pain, the important thing is that athletes realise they are not alone and seek help. As we suffer more and more fallouts from our countries top athletes we will be forced into a position to recognize the need for mental health support and to nurture a better life-career balance for our sporting heros.

Texas Volleyball to host 2010 NCAA Regional

The NCAA has named The University of Texas as one of its regional sites for the 2010 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee announced Friday that The University of Texas has been selected as one of four regional sites for the 2010 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships.

 

Texas’ Gregory Gymnasium will host a regional for the third time in five years as the Longhorns seek to make their fifth straight regional appearance.

The four 2010 regional sites include: Bank of America Arena on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.; Rec Hall at Penn State University in University Park, Pa.; the University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio; and Texas. All competition will be played December 10-11.

The NCAA also announced its four 2011 regional sites: the Stephen C. O’Connell Center at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.; Sports Pavilion at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in Minneapolis, Minn.; Honolulu/Stan Sherriff Center at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii; and Memorial Coliseum at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. All competition will be played December 9-10.

“The committee is excited to offer these opportunities to the institutions that bid on the regional championships,” said Terry Gawlik, the chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee and the associate athletics director at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. “It’s great to see institutions not only willing and able to host, but also providing an avenue to expose and grow the volleyball championship across the country.”

Previously announced were the finals sites for both the 2010 and 2011 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships. The University of Missouri, Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission will host the 2010 championship at the Sprint Center. In 2011, UTSA and the San Antonio Sports Foundation will host the championship at the Alamodome.

Self-belief Beyond Sport

I think a key to an athletes success is their unwavering belief in themselves and their own ability. This self-belief does not always cross over to skills outside of sport and can contribute to the struggle athletes face on retirement.

Beliefs are aspects of life that we believe to hold true. What I believe determines my reality, what you believe determines your reality. So how do we come to believe different things? It often comes down to our experiences, particularly our experiences growing up. 

Research shows that our experiences within our first 7 years of life are very instrumental in determining our beliefs, in shaping our beliefs. They can be shaped by our parents and what we see happening with our parents and around our community, or church. Think now about what you believe. What do you believe about your abilities, what do you believe about life? 

I mean we all believe the world is round. But at one time in life, people thought the world was flat. And that was their reality. They hadnt seen anything different. 

So, what sort of beliefs are helping you or holding you back? 

Some beliefs are great like I am going to the Olympics. I had a self-belief that I could do it and so that drove me to train and persist until I achieved it in 2000. I am sure there are things that you pushed for and created because you believed you could do it. I am also sure there are some things you are not doing because you believe they are not possible. 

In particular, what do you believe about your ability to succeed in areas outside of sport? What do you believe about finance? Are you good with money? What about career, relationships, health. 

I have now created an amazing life after sport because I broke through beliefs about what I could have in life. I chose to believe that I could continue on doing what I was doing, traveling around the world and have an amazing relationship that supported that. Before that I limited myself by thinking I had to choose between one and another. How often do we think we have to choose between one thing and the other? And then that becomes our life - one of compromise. 

Think about some things you might have believed from when you were young are you good enough, pretty enough, do you have what it takes? Sport is easy, math is hard. The list goes on, the beliefs list. It all goes back to points in time when you decide to believe something. 

For example, I was at an airport watching this frustrated man berate his wife after a struggle through security. They had 3 tiny kids with them looking uncomfortable as their parents argued. The eldest little boy stuck up for his mom at one point saying it was not her fault. The father was doing the best he could with a difficult situation, however, at the heat of the moment he told the boy life is hard and you had better get used to it. 

This little kid is probably 7-8 years old, and with that statement from his father a new belief was most likely shaped right there. I can just imagine him in 20 years time thinking life is hard and his life reflecting that. This is the power of the mind in determining our life. The good news is that beliefs can change. The first step is awareness. When you realize that you can choose what you believe then you are a big step forward in creating success in anything you desire, including beyond sport.

Washington To Host 2010 NCAA Volleyball Regionals

The Huskies have reached the Final Four twice before when hosting Regionals.

SEATTLE – With a reputation as one of college volleyball’s most successful and respected programs – on the court and in the stands – the University of Washington has been a key destination for NCAA postseason play in recent years.

 

The NCAA has just announced that next season, for the fourth time since 2004, Bank of America at Hec Edmundson Pavilion will serve as one site for the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Regionals.  The winner of the four-team regional, scheduled for Dec. 10-11, will advance to the NCAA Final Four at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

 

The three other Regional hosts for 2010 include Penn State, Texas, and Dayton.

 

“The committee is excited to offer these opportunities to the institutions that bid on the regional championships,” said Terry Gawlik, the chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. “It’s great to see institutions not only willing and able to host but also providing an avenue to expose and grow the volleyball championship across the country.”

 

In the six NCAA regional games it has hosted (NCAA first & second round games are not included), the UW has averaged nearly 5,500 fans per session.  The Huskies defeated UCLA at home in 2004 to advance to their first-ever NCAA semifinal appearance.  Two years later, the UW knocked-off fifth-seeded Penn State to qualify for its third-straight semifinal appearance. That was the last NCAA tournament loss for the Nittany Lions, who have won the last three NCAA titles.

 

In 2008, Washington swept Utah to reach the Regional final, but lost a five-set heartbreaker to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the next match.

Recreating That Locker Room Feeling

One of the things mentioned by retired athletes about what they miss about sport is the locker-room camaraderie that sport provides. As an athlete you hang around a supportive sporting community with like-minded friends and colleagues. Everyone shares a common objective and passion in life. Its not uncommon for sporting relationships to extend beyond the sporting field to personal life and this can result in an athletes life revolving around sport and its contacts. 

So what happens when the athlete retires? Do they stay within the sporting community? Many do and go on to be coaches and mentors. Some stick around and may even come out of retirement. I know because I did that, twice! 

Many athletes, including the collegiate athlete, leave the sporting community to pursue new goals and a career. How can they recreate that same feeling of camaraderie that encouraged and supported them during sport? 

I didnt think too much about a support network when I left sport. In fact, I used to pride myself on my independence and all the goals I achieved all on my own. Now I see how that held me back from recreating success beyond sport. You see, it does take a supportive network to achieve most dreams. No one truly does it well alone. All the greatest achievements were achieved through teamwork. 

It might be necessary to be pro-active in creating a new network of friends and like-minded people that can relate to your new career and interests. Hang around with supportive people that belief in you and your dreams. As you grow and develop you might even find that you outgrow some friends and make new ones. You may currently have people in your immediate circle who shoot down your ideas and goals. They often have your best interest at heart and may not want you to risk failure. As an athlete, you know that the more you fail the more you will succeed. 

The more people you have in your network, and know about your goals and dream, the more likely you will achieve what you want to achieve. Start sharing your dream with others. You will be amazed at how you come across people who know somebody who knows somebody that can help you. 

How can you create a supportive environment for yourself? What networking opportunities are available to you? Take note that when it comes to networking and developing business relationships, think about what you can give more than what you can get. Be supportive and you will gain support. Be a good friend and you will gain friends.

Fifty-One Student Athletes Named to SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A total of 51 University of Alabama student-athletes, representing football, soccer and volleyball, were named to the 2009-10 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, the SEC Office announced earlier today.

 

The Crimson Tide football team had 30 players earn the conference honor. Alabama finished the season a perfect 14-0 en route to earning its 13^th National Championship.  The 30 honorees was the third most in the conference.

 

The complete list of football players includes: David Blalock (Pre-business), John Michael Boswell (Pre-business), Hardie Buck (History), Drew Bullard (Mechanical Engineering), Drew Davis (Sport Management), Luther Davis (General Studies HES), Brandon Deaderick (General Studies HES), P.J. Coach Judy Green’s volleyball team had nine Academic Honor Roll selections.

 

The volleyball list includes: Mary Catherine Aune (Advertising), Ashley Frazier (Marketing), Calli Johnson (Psychology), Alyssa Meuth (Human Development & Family Studies), Leigh Moyer (Art), Stephanie Riley (Biology), Elizabeth Salstrand (Public Relations), Kayla Schmidt (Exercise Science) and Jennifer Weber (Management & Marketing).

 

The soccer team had 12 members of the Academic Honor Roll under head coach Todd Bramble. 

 

The honorees were: Justine Bernier (Exercise Science), Alex Butera (Communications), Victoria Frederick (Biology), Hailey Hull (Food & Nutrition), Kelsey King (Chemical Engineering), Shannon Lathrop (Food & Nutrition), Grace Lawson (Communications), Carly Mygrants (Public Relations), Laura Nicholls (Event Planning), Brooke Rogers (Finance), Lauren Ruta (Education) and Kelly King (Public Relations).

 

 

The 2009 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2009 Spring, Summer and Fall terms. Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll.

 

The following criteria should be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

Happy National Girls and Women In Sports Day, Rest In Peace Flo Hyman

Beginning in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has become the premiere occasion to celebrate the participation, success and accomplishments of girls and women athletes. 

What started in 1987 as a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball player and superstar Flo Hyman has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states. 

On February 3, 2010, thousands will gather to celebrate NGWSD 2010 and 

"Stay Strong, Play On."

According to the Women's Sports Foundation:

"NGWSD is marked annually with events around the country and on Capitol Hill to commemorate the achievements of girls and women in athletics. It is also an important day to promote the continued expansion of opportunities for girls and women to play sports and live physically active lives."

All-American Amanda Gil Transfers To Huskies

The 2008 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year ranked second in the NCAA in blocks last year.

SEATTLE – Washington volleyball received a huge boost today as All-America middle blocker Amanda Gil transferred into the Husky program from UCLA. The Pac-10 leader in blocks in 2009 and an All-Pac-10 First Team selection, Gil will have two years of eligibility remaining and will be able to patrol the net for UW starting in 2011.

 

Gil, a 6-foot, 6-inch native of San Jose, Calif. was voted to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team following her sophomore season with the Bruins in 2009. Gil’s 180 total blocks and 1.57 blocks per set average both easily led the Pac-10, and ranked second in the NCAA.

 

“We are very excited about Amanda joining our program,” said head coach Jim McLaughlin. “Not only is she an outstanding volleyball player, she is also a wonderful young lady.  We were impressed with her ability coming out of high school and, at this point, we feel she has the potential to upgrade our team in a number of areas. We have big plans for her and each day will be important as she works towards the objectives we have set for her.”

 

Despite knowing she would have to sit out a year due to Pac-10 transfer rules, Gil knew she had found the right fit when she visited Seattle.

 

“I know in my heart Washington is the right place for me because Washington has everything I could have ever wanted in a school: a beautiful campus, a great community, an amazing coaching staff, hardworking and committed girls, and excellent academics,” said Gil.

 

Washington has had great success in recent years developing standout middle blockers, with Alesha Deesing (2006) and Jessica Swarbrick (2006-08) earning AVCA All-America honors and sophomore Bianca Rowland earning AVCA honorable mention and Volleyball Magazine Second Team All-America honors this past year.

 

“What I like most about the coaching staff at Washington is that they are genuine people. Jim, Leslie (Tuiasosopo), and Keno (Gandara) care about you as a volleyball player and as a person,” said Gil. “I was impressed with how the coaches conducted their practices, and how focused and hard all the girls were working to improve as volleyball players. I have always been a hard worker and to see the commitment from everyone involved was impressive.”

 

Gil also led the Bruins last season with a .360 hitting percentage that ranked fifth in the conference while averaging 2.37 kills per set. The Bruins tied with Washington for second in the Pac-10 with a 13-5 league record, and they reached the NCAA second round. She was named the 2008 Pacific Region as well as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year when her 1.46 blocks per set ranked sixth in the NCAA.

 

“She has a very good arm and a good feel for the game and I can’t wait to have the opportunity to work with her in the gym on a daily basis,” McLaughlin says. “She is a tremendous talent and we feel very fortunate that she has decided to come to the University of Washington.”
