Duquesne Women's Volleyball Team Signs Three Recruits to National Letters of Intent
Duquesne volleyball head coach Steve Opperman announced the signings of Allison Foschia (Northfield Center, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Kate Begor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Alexandra Smartt (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary) to national letters of intent.
The 6-0 Foschia, who was ranked #83 on Prepvolleyball Top 100 players in the country, was one of most recruited players in the Midwest as well as nationally. She was a two-time All-Ohio player while leading Walsh Jesuit to the regional finals this past season. Foschia led her club team, Maverick A.C.E. to a third place finish at the National Division at the USA Nationals.
Opperman on Foschia:
"Allison is a player that is very intimidating at the net and has great ball control and court presence. She is a player that knows how to win and makes those players around her better. Has fiery competitive nature that will add to the current team. She is a player that will be looked to contribute immediately and to make an impact."
Foschia plans on majoring in occupational therapy
The 5-10 Begor was the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year and is a three-time PSVCA All-State and All-WPIAL selection. She led Mt. Lebanon to a pair of WPIAL championships and three section championships.
Opperman on Begor:
"Kate is a player that understands the game well and has a great sense of decision making. She isn't a player that is flashy, but one who gets the job done and knows how to lead her team. Her high school team went undefeated until the State Championships this past year under her guidance and court leadership. She will push for playing time right away and will help move us up in the A-10 standings."
Begor plans on majoring in communications.
The 6-0 Smartt led her Lake Mary team to a 22-5 record and a conference championship in 2009. She finished her senior season with 215 kills while being selected first-team all-district.
Smartt also led her club team, Orlando Volleyball Academy, to a fifth place finish in the American Division at the Junior Olympics
Opperman on Smartt:
"Alex is an athletic player that is still developing. She is a hard worker and determined at being the best player she can be. She is a great team player and will add to the depth and athleticism of our current roster. She will be a player that can have much success in the A10 with some more in depth training under her belt."
Smartt plans on majoring in psychology.
