Four More To Join Oregon State Volleyball Team 2010 Roster
Four more student-athletes will join the 2010 Oregon State volleyball roster, announced Thursday by head coach Taras Liskevych.
“We look forward to these additions to our 2010 class,” Liskevych said. “And we look forward to the impact they will have on the 2010 squad as well as the future of Beaver Volleyball.”
Dreanne Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Kamehameh-Maui HS/Western New Mexico University/Eastern Arizona Community College) – who will be signing a National Letter of Intent (NLI), Natalie Morgan (Soquel, Calif./Soquel HS), Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore./Marist HS) and Laura Schaudt (Philomath, Ore./Philomath HS) join three others who were added in the fall – Tayla Woods (Corvallis, Ore.), Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) and Kelsey Zimmerman (Bend, Ore.) – and Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.), who started classes at Oregon State at the beginning of the Spring 2010 term.
Dreanne Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai’i/Kamehameha-Maui HS/Western New Mexico/Eastern Arizona CC/Hawai’ian Style VBC) 6-0 Outside Hitter
Dreanne Shaw joins the Oregon State volleyball team after spending last season at Eastern Arizona Community College, being named an NJCAA First Team All-American, an AVCA Two-Year College Second Team All-American and was on the NJCAA Region I and ACCAC First Teams. In addition, she was named ACCAC Player of the Year.
“With Dre Shaw, we have an experienced player that can challenge early for court time,” Liskevych said. “Dre is an outside attacker who possesses both a good array of shots as well as the physicality to terminate against a Pac-10 block. She has had a long road to make it to this level, and we look for her to make the most of her remaining two seasons of eligibility.”
Prior to her season at Eastern Arizona Community College, Shaw spent a season at Western New Mexico University, leading her team to a 14-5 record and a West Division Championship. She was named Freshman of the Year and to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Third Team.
During her prep years, she was a Honolulu Star Bulletin All-State Honorable Mention selection as a senior, and a two-time Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Player of the Year at Kamehameha-Maui High School.
“I chose to come to OSU to challenge myself in becoming the best student-athlete I could be and to represent what one person can do with the help of family, friends, and loved ones,” Shaw said. “I want to have a fun and successful season and I'm looking forward to new friends and leaving OSU with my degree. Being the first one in my family to attend college, this opportunity means the world to me. My family and friends are my motivation and without them I would not have come this far. To leave Oregon State accomplishing all of my goals would be the ideal graduation gift and with that, I plan to live everyday at OSU as if it were my last and take nothing for granted!”
Natalie Morgan (Soquel, Calif./Soquel HS/Main Beach VBC) 6-0 Middle Blocker/Opposite Hitter
Natalie Morgan joins Oregon State after lettering three years in volleyball at Soquel High School at middle blocker, adding opposite hitter to her title during her senior season. As a senior, Morgan earned All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) Second Team honors at opposite after earning first team accolades as a junior.
In addition to her play on the court, Morgan also founded and coordinated the First Annual “Battle of the Sexes” match to raise money for the volleyball program.
“Natalie Morgan will add depth to our middle and opposite positions,” Liskevych said. “She is an experienced player, a solid blocker and good attacker off of one-foot. Her personality and work ethic will be great assets to the team.”
“I decided on Oregon State because I love the environment of the school and town,” Morgan said. “The support the town has for the school and the athletics is astonishing to me. I am looking forward to the athletic experience, the new friends, and the education. Playing at Oregon State means a lot more to me than only bettering myself in volleyball. Not only will I succeed in my knowledge and skills of volleyball, but I will also learn how to be tough in order to pursue my goals, and how to handle any social or work-related dilemma that I come across in my life.”
Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore./Marist HS/Webfoot Juniors VBC) 6-2 Middle Blocker/Opposite Hitter
Allie Rogers is coming off of a solid senior season in volleyball at middle blocker, being named the OSAA Class 4A Player of the Year after earning All-State and All Sky-Em League honors the past two seasons. She helped her team to a fourth place finish as a junior and second this past season.
In addition to her success on the volleyball court, Rogers was a three-year letterwinner in basketball at forward and four-year letterwinner in track and field at high jump. In basketball, she was an All-League selection all four years, earning All-State accolades in 2008. Rogers helped her team to a third place state finish in 2008 and second in 2010. And in track, she is a three-time All-State and All-League selection, finishing second in the state high jump meet by clearing 5-4.
Rogers comes from an athletic family. Her father and mother, George Rogers and Hamlin Jost, both played basketball at the College of the Redwoods.
“Allie is a natural blocker, a very good athlete and a tough competitor,” Liskevych said. “That combined with her height makes us look forward to her development. She is an Oregon athlete that wasn’t looked at by most colleges and was a three-sport athlete in basketball and track.”
"I selected Oregon State because of its academic reputation, the sense of community and the overall enthusiasm for the volleyball program,” Rogers said. “I am looking forward to learning on the court an in the classroom. Go Beavs!"
Laura Schaudt (Philomath HS/MidValley Volleyball) 6-4 Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter
Laura Schaudt, a three-sport athlete at Philomath High School, posted a solid senior season, earning All-Valco League Second Team honors in volleyball at middle blocker, adding first team accolades in basketball at post. The 6-4 student-athlete picked up volleyball during her junior season after competing in cross country as a freshman, where she earned league honorable mention status. As a junior, Schaudt was an All-League First Team honoree and team captain. She has a number of other basketball and track and field honors over her career and is currently finishing her final season in track and field, competing in the high jump and triple jump.
“Laura walked into our office last fall at 6-3 and has grown to 6-4 in the past few months,” Liskevych said. “She is very athletic and jump reaches easily over 10 feet. While she has played very little volleyball, she has shown a natural aptitude for the game. She is another Oregon athlete that has flown under the radar of most colleges, who was a basketball and track athlete who decided to play volleyball late in her career.Both Allie and Laura are prime redshirt candidates, which we are fortunate to be able to consider at this time of our program’s development.”
Schaudt is the daughter of former Oregon State women’s basketball All-American and three-time All-Northwest College Women’s Sports Association first team selection, Carol Menken-Schaudt from 1980-82, earning her All-America status in 1981. Menken-Schaudt competed in the 1984 Olympis in Los Angeles, and is also a 1988 Oregon State Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and 1993 Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Her father, Ken, also attended Oregon State.
“I chose to come to Oregon State and play volleyball mainly because it is a very respectable program and the coaches work hard to help the players improve,” Schaudt said. “I’m anxious to built relationships with the athletes and coaches and join the OSU volleyball family. Individually, I’m really looking forward to advancing my skills and reaching my full potential. Playing volleyball for the Beavers will be an unforgettable experience, and I’m so blessed to have this opportunity.”
