Kentucky Volleyball Team Reaches Mid-Way Point of Spring Slate
Wildcats earned a win at Illinois, a perennial top-15 team, on Saturday
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky volleyball team’s spring schedule has been in full swing since the end of March and the Wildcats have now reached the mid-way point of their spring slate with much success.
After graduating a pair of All-Americans in Sarah Rumely and BriAnne Sauer, UK has used the spring season to institute new rotations and lineups. A number of players are seeing extended action including redshirt freshmen Whitney Billings and Alexandra Morgan. Setter Christine Hartmann is directing the UK offense full-time for the first time in her career, and Stephanie Klefot has taken over the role as libero.
The Wildcats began their spring slate at an all-day tournament in Muncie, Ind. UK picked up a win over IPFW and split with Indiana in a two-set format. Kentucky dropped matches to Western Kentucky and Purdue – wrapping up a four-match day for the Blue and White.
Saturday UK returned to form with a win over Illinois in a collegiate match format. The Illini, were a top-10 team and Sweet Sixteen participant a season ago and the Blue and White claimed a 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18) victory on Illinois’ home floor.
“So far this spring I’ve seen us struggle early, but we have improved and found a better rhythm last weekend after making some adjustments,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “The team worked hard from one weekend to the next. This group is competitive and they are intent on getting better each week this spring. We’re looking forward to another great weekend of competition in Louisville this weekend.”
The Wildcats have two more weekends of action in the spring season. UK travels to Louisville this weekend to partake in the KIVA Invitational. Kentucky will wrap up action when they host their own version of a tournament with Georgia Tech and Purdue visiting Lexington on April 24.
