LSU Volleyball Team's DeGirolamo Wins NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lauren DeGirolamo of the LSU volleyball program was selected for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as announced by the governing body of intercollegiate athletics. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically that have finished their final year of athletic competition.
“Lauren has been an instrumental part of LSU volleyball’s success and an excellent ambassador of our program over the past five seasons,” head coach Fran Flory said. “She’s very dedicated in everything she touches and truly deserves this prominent honor. We’re so proud of Lauren and wish her the best as she continues her education.”
DeGirolamo capped her career in style as the Tigers captured the 2009 SEC title, the program’s first since 1991. She finished her career with 1,014 kills and 524 blocks after bouncing back from an ACL injury that cut her junior campaign short. The Illinois native joined Lisa Smith [1984-87] and Julie Stempel [1988-91] as the only players in program history to reach the 1,000-kill and 500-block plateau.
DeGirolamo made an instant impact on the Tigers en route to All-SEC Freshman Team and Louisiana Freshman of the Year accolades in 2006. She took her game to the next level and smacked 430 kills on a .332 attack percentage as a sophomore. For her efforts, DeGirolamo racked up All-SEC and AVCA All-South Region First-Team honors in addition to AVCA All-American Honorable Mention status.
“I’m really proud of all that Lauren has achieved: in Math as an undergraduate and in Educational Technology as a graduate student — both with stellar GPAs,” faculty athletics representative Dydia DeLyser said. “Not only a leader of our volleyball team, Lauren has shown genuine commitment in community service. I’m confident that she will continue to make us all proud of her, as she uses this prestigious and highly competitive scholarship to complete her graduate studies and fulfill her goal of becoming a math teacher and volleyball coach at an under-resourced public school.”
DeGirolamo serves as Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for 2009-10. She also has represented LSU as a three-time CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First-Team pick along with back-to-back SEC Community Service Team selections.
“Lauren is an exceptional student and has accomplished so much in her LSU career,” director of academic affairs Mary Boudreaux said. “I’m thrilled she has earned this prestigious scholarship that recognizes her academic and athletic achievement as well as her leadership activities and community service.”
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletic and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
