Southeast Missouri Volleyball Team Signs Julie Shives for 2010 Season
Shives brings total number of Fall 2010 recruits to five
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Thursday, April 15, 2010) – Southeast Missouri State head volleyball coach Renata Heard announced the signing of Julie Shives to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Redhawks team this coming fall. She is the fifth signee of the 2010 recruiting class, joining Andrea Baylin, Berkley Idel, Colleen Yarber and Emily Coon as future Redhawks.
Shives is a 5-8 setter from Hilliard, Ohio where she competed for the Hilliard Davidson High School team her senior season. She previously played at Central Crossing High School her first three years before leaving due to the school dropping athletics.
This past season she was named First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference and to the All-Central District First Team after leading the team in assists, aces and digs while garnering team MVP honors. As team captain she led her team to the Central District Finals Championships under the tutelage of head coach Betty Cameron.
For her efforts during the season she was selected to play in two post-season All-Star matches including the prestigious Ohio State All-Star Match.
While at Central Crossing under head coach Julie Peters, she was a three-year starter garnering First Team All-Conference honors as a junior, Second Team honors as a sophomore and honorable mention accolades as a freshman.
Her junior campaign she was named team captain and led the team in assists and aces while being named First Team All-District as the team won the District Sectional Championships. Her sophomore year she led the team in kills and aces.
A gifted athlete, she was a member of the gymnastics and track and field teams at Central Crossing. She is currently a discus thrower on the track and field team at Hilliard Davidson.
At the club level, Shives is a member of the Columbus Volleyball Academy where she is a teammate of fellow Redhawks signee and prep All-American Andrea Baylin. Last summer they helped their team qualify for the Junior Olympics National Championships.
Baylin, Idel, Yarber and Coon signed with the Redhawks during the November signing period.
