University of Arizona Volleyball Inks Two Recruits
Wildcats add Tarryn Luafalemana and Marketa Hanzlova to the roster
TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona volleyball coach Dave Rubio announced Monday that Tarryn Luafalemana and Marketa Hanzlova have signed National Letters-of-Intent to attend school and play volleyball.
Luafalemana, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Carson, Calif., is a highly-touted prospect who will have the opportunity to step in and play right away. As a senior in high school, Luafalemana tallied 151 kills, 91 digs, 60 blocks and 54 aces in leading Carson High School to a record of 21-9 last season.
“Tarryn is an extremely quick player and very athletic,” said Rubio. “She has a tremendous upside and has a chance to be a force for our team.”
Hanzlova, a junior college transfer, prepped at North Idaho College the previous two seasons. A 6-foot-1 outside hitter, Hanzlova originally hails from Liberec, Czech Republic. In her two seasons at NIC, Hanzlova was a two-time NJCAA All-American and led the Cardinals to the NJCAA National Tournament in ’08 and its first Scenic West Athletic co-championship in ‘09. As a sophomore, Hanzlova led NIC with 357 kills and 37 aces. She also racked up 254 digs and 52 blocks in her second season with the Cardinals.
“Marketa is a talented outside hitter who will bring added depth to our lineup,” said Rubio. “She is another player who should help us immediately.”
Additionally, during the fall signing period, UA received a commitment from Maddie Loranzo to play for Arizona next season. Loranzo is a middle blocker out of Oakmont High School in Roseville, Calif. Loranzo appeared in 67 matches as a senior, posting 72 total blocks, 129 kills and 21 aces.
The Wildcats look to have another tough schedule ahead of them in 2010 with the usual early non-conference tournaments followed by the rigorous Pac-10 Conference matches. Arizona opens its season at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. against Cal Poly.
