The Eastern Washington University women’s volleyball team has earned the America Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for its triumphs in the classroom during the 2009-10 school year. This marks the eighth time in school history the Eagles have been honored with the award, and the first time since 2005.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Head coach Miles Kydd’s team achieved a 3.44 cumulative GPA during the 2009-10 academic year, which was the second-highest GPA of all sports teams at EWU. The Eags also distinguished themselves in the Big Sky Conference, as 11 members were named to the 2009 BSC All-Academic team; the most for any volleyball squad in the league.
Eastern was one of 94 Division I schools to receive the AVCA award this year, while a record 450 total teams earned the distinction. This program has increased by over 300 percent in the last 10 years and 79 percent in the past three years alone.
"There is no better way to gauge the success of a sport than to track the accomplishments of the people who participate," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Each of these 450 teams represents 12-15 really smart kids. What a great day for the sport of volleyball."
