University of Central Florida Volleyball Team Unveils 2010 Schedule
The Knights will entertain East Carolina for its annual
VolleyBowl match on Oct. 10. ORLANDO, Fla.
(UCFAthletics.com) – One
volleyball tournament at The Venue at UCF and 12 total matches against volleyball teams that
concluded the 2009 season in the top 100 on the final NCAA RPI Report
highlight UCF’s 2010 volleyball schedule released by head coach Todd
Dagenais Wednesday. The Knights will host 13 regular-season matches on
their home court this season, which includes 10 Conference USA contests.
The schedule also
pits the Black and Gold against five teams that posted 22 or more wins
last season, including Baylor, who finished the season ranked No. 20 in
the final AVCA Coaches Poll with a 24-10 record. Prior to its
meeting with the Bears, UCF opens the 2010 season and a six-match
roadtrip at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Ft. Myers against the
host Eagles, Houston Baptist and Bethune-Cookman Aug. 27-28. The Knights
conclude their road swing Sept. 3-4 when they partake in the action at
the UNC-Wilmington Hilton Garden Inn/Courtyard by Marriott Classic.
During the two-day event, the Black and Gold will face the Seahawks, UNC
Greensboro and South Carolina State. UCF finally
returns to the friendly confines of The Venue at UCF when it hosts its
home-opener against Florida Atlantic in its first match of the
Radisson-UCF Classic on Sept. 10. Later that evening the Knights will
finally get the chance to square-off with Baylor, who looks to be the
squad’s toughest opponent of the year, before concluding its home event
Sept. 11 with a contest against in-state rival Jacksonville. The excitement of
playing in front of the home crowd in Orlando will not last long,
however, as the Black and Gold embarks on another six-match road trip
Sept. 17-Oct. 1. The stretch includes play in the Chattanooga Classic
(Sept. 17-18) against James Madison, Chattanooga and Belmont and its
C-USA opener against Marshall (Oct. 23) in Huntington, W.Va. This season will
be the first in which the Knights will not have the opportunity to
participate in the C-USA Volleyball Championship, as league coaches
voted against holding the event during the offseason. With the decision
to not sponsor a postseason league tournament, the conference office
added four additional C-USA matches to each team’s schedule in 2010. The Knights will
battle the Thundering Herd in back-to-back road matches (Sept. 23-24),
while also facing Houston (Oct. 1), Southern Miss (Oct. 15), Tulane
(Oct. 17), SMU (Oct. 29), Tulsa (Oct. 31), Memphis (Nov. 19), UAB (Nov.
21) and UTEP (Nov. 24) on the road in league action throughout the
season. UCF is set to
host its first C-USA match Oct. 3 against 2009 NCAA-participant Rice,
before welcoming East Carolina to The Venue for a two-match home series
Oct. 9-10. The match against the Pirates on Oct. 10 will serve as the
Knights’ annual VolleyBowl match, in which the squad will attempt to
break the program attendance record for the third-straight season. In
2009, VolleyBowl II saw a program-record 1,603 fans cheer on the Black
and Gold as it battled in-state rival USF. Also making the
trip to the Sunshine State in league play will be the Blazers (Oct. 22),
Tigers (Oct. 24), Green Wave (Nov. 5), Golden Eagles (Nov. 7), Golden
Hurricane (Nov. 12), Mustangs (Nov. 14) and Miners (Nov. 27). The NCAA
Championship first and second rounds will be held Dec. 2-5, while the
NCAA Regional Finals will take place Dec. 10-11. The 2010 volleyball
season will come to a close with the NCAA Championship Final which is
slated for Dec. 16-18 in Kansas City, Mo. 2010 UCF
