Charlotte Volleyball Team Heads to NYC to Start Conference Weekend Matches
Local Media Begins Promotion of Dig Pink Match, with Events Planned All Next Week
CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte heads to the Northeast for a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference road matches, beginning Friday night at Fordham at 7 p.m. Sunday, the Niners play at Rhode Island 1 p.m.
The 49ers are looking for their first league win after an 0-3 start, despite a pair of five-set losses and a four-set loss in the first two weekends. Charlotte is 9-9 overall this season. The Niners are second in the league in opponent hitting percentage (.163) and second in blocking (2.26 blocks per set) in the conference through last weekend's matches.
Last Saturday, sophomore Kalan Thompson (Statesville, N.C. / West Iredell HS) logged a career-high 21 digs in her first career start and freshman Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) had a career-best 14 kills in the five-set loss. For the season sophomore Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) breached the 200-kill mark last weekend, sitting at 202 kills, or 3.31 per set.
The Niners spilt a pair of 3-2 matches with the Rams in 2009, with each team taking a victory at home last season. Fordham played a home match on Wednesday night, beating Hofstra 3-2 in the Bronx. Charlotte took out Rhode Island 3-1 in Halton Arena in the only meeting between the two last year. Both Rams teams are 2-2 in league play so far this season. URI lost at Providence 3-1 Tuesday and hosts George Washington Friday night.

The Niners will return home next week for the ninth-annual Dig Pink match on Friday, with local media shining the spotlight on Charlotte volleyball. News 14 taped segments Thursday to run at the first of next week and Fox News Rising will be doing live segments Monday morning from the Halton Arena floor Monday morning, starting at 5:30 a.m. The team and coaches will be in attendance to promote the events leading up to Friday night's match.
