SDSU Volleyball Team Set For Three Home Matches In Five Days
Aztecs to face UC Riverside, Wyoming and Colorado State this week
AZTECS RETURN HOME FOR THREE MATCHES THIS WEEK
San Diego State will play three matches in five days this week including one non-conference contest. The Aztecs will take a break from league action as they host UC Riverside on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7:00 p.m. (PT) in Peterson Gym. Two days later, (Thursday, Oct. 28), SDSU will resume MWC play as it faces Wyoming in a match scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. (PT) start at Peterson Gym. San Diego State will conclude its week with a contest against conference leader Colorado State in Peterson Gym on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
SERIES RECORDS
The Aztecs hold a 10-1 edge in their series against UC Riverside</u><.b>. The teams first met in 1976 with the most recent meeting coming in 2005. The Highlanders lone win in the series came in that last meeting in 2005 when they defeated SDSU in four sets in Peterson Gym. The Aztecs are 3-1 against UCR at home, 5-0 in Riverside and 2-0 at neutral sites.<br>San Diego State is 14-29 in its series vs. Colorado State. SDSU has dropped its last 18 matches dating back to the 2002 season (and 26 of the last 27) against the Rams. SDSU is 5-14 vs. Colorado State in Fort Collins, 7-12 in San Diego and 2-3 on neutral courts. The Aztecs last win on the Rams’ home floor came during the 1996 season.<br>SDSU has lost just 10 times in its previous 39 meetings with the Wyoming to lead the series, 29-10. Nine of the 10 Aztec losses in the series have come in Laramie. The teams first played each other during the 1984 season and have met annually (with the exception of 1998) on a home-and-home basis since 1990.Tthe Cowgirls, the teams have won eight of the last 14 meetings. SDSU is 17-1 vs. Wyoming at home, 10-9 in matches played in Laramie and 2-0 on neutral courts.
HANNASCH ON THE OFFENSIVE
Middle blocker Andrea Hannasch had a pair of double-figure kill games last week with 10 at Air Force and 14 at UNLV. Over the two matches she averaged 4.00 kills per set. Her .542 hitting percentage at UNLV on Oct. 23 was her second-highest of the season. She also totaled nine blocks in the two contests to maintain her season average of 1.32 per set. Her blocking average ranks third in the Mountain West Conference this week. Hannasch is currently 20th in the nation in blocking, up three spots from last week. Those rankings include athletes from 319 Division I teams.
NASH ATTACKS
Freshman Summer Nash had back-to-back double-figure kills matches for the second time this season last week with 12 at both Air Force and UNLV. She turned in a personal season high with six digs in the match at Air Force on Oct. 21. Her .360 attack percentage in the contest at UNLV (Oct. 23) marks the eighth time this season that she has hit better than .300 in a match.
FOUCH DOUBLES UP
Freshman setter Johnna Fouch continues to lead the MWC in assists with an average of 10.54 per set. She improved her average by .13 assists per set with a total of 83 in the seven sets at Air Force and UNLV last week. Her 39 assists at UNLV (Oct. 23) marked the seventh time this season that she has averaged 12 assists or better in a match. Her assist average also ranks 53rd in the nation (NCAA Division I) this week, up five places from last week.
SEXTON LEADS THE OFFENSE
Kyley Sexton had back-to-back double-figure kill outings last week for the first time since mid-September. The sophomore outside hitter tallied 15 kills at Air Force and 13 ast UNLV. He hitting percentage of .417 at UNLV (Oct. 23) was her second-best mark of the season, just behind the .419 she recorded against Northern Colorado in the second match of the season.
OROPEZA ON DEFENSE
Freshman defensive specialist Kyla Oropeza has seen action in 20 of SDSU’s 21matches this season and started on three occasions. She recorded a kill, assist and service ace in the win over UNLV last Saturday (Oct. 23). Oropeza is averaging 1.32 digs per set and has appeared in 73 of the teams 78 sets this fall.
AZTECS IN THE MWC STATS
Johnna Fouch leads the league’s setters at 10.54 assists per set. Andrea Hannasch is third in blocking (1.32 per set) and ninth in points (3.47 per set). Kyley Sexton is ninth in the conference in kill average (3.08 per set) and 10th in points (3.45 per set). Kristi Jackels is fourth in digs at 3.62 per set. Lauren Salisbury is seventh in hitting percentage (.293).
AZTEC NOTES
As a team, the Aztecs have hit .300 or better in six matches, their highest total since it reached that mark in nine matches during the 2005 campaign … Over the last four matches, opponents are hitting .216 against the Aztecs. SDSU is hitting .280 over its last four matches … SDSU’s team blocking total (13.0 blocks - 4 solo, 18 assists) against Utah on Oct. 9 was its highest of the season … The Aztecs are 1-10 in matches in which they trail in kills and also 0-9 in contests in which they record fewer digs than their opponent. On the flip side, they are 9-1 when leading in kills and 10-2 when leading in digs. The match vs. Seattle on Oct. 15 was the only that SDSU won when it trailed in kills … Andrea Hannasch is the lone Aztec to have recorded at least one block in each of SDSU’s matches this season … Kyley Sexton and Johnna Fouch are the only Aztecs to have started every match this season. Fouch and libero Kristi Jackels are the only players to have appeared in every set in 2010.
