SEATTLE – A day after getting a win on Senior Night, the Husky volleyball team learned it will be back on its home court again in just a few days, as the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee announced today the 64-team field for the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. The Huskies were chosen to host first and second round action, set for this Thursday and Friday at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Washington will open up against the University of Michigan on Thursday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time. Prior to UW’s match, 15th-seeded University of Hawaii will face Portland State University at 5 p.m. Pacific time. The winners of each match will then face off on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the Regional semifinals.
Should the Huskies (21-8, 10-8 Pac-10) advance through the first two rounds, they would remain at home as Seattle will be one of four Regional sites hosting play December 10 and 11. The pre-determined regional sites are Austin, Texas; University Park, Pennsylvania; Dayton, Ohio; and Seattle, Washington. The regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by the University of Missouri, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on December 16 and 18.
This will be the ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Huskies under head coach Jim McLaughlin, and the 15th in program history. The Dawgs won their final two matches this past weekend against the Oregon schools to finish fifth in the Pac-10.
“I think our team is in a good place,” said McLaughlin. “We have some momentum going in. Every match is tough in the NCAA tournament, so we just have to play how we are capable, and eliminate the distractions.”
The teams tabbed as the top four seeds were No. 1 Florida; No. 2 Nebraska, Lincoln; No. 3 Stanford; and No. 4 Penn State, the three-time defending champs. The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with eight teams selected. The Southeastern Conference garnered seven teams followed by the Pac-10 with six.
On Wednesday, the teams will have practices open to the public as well as press conferences. Washington will practice from 3:45-5:15 p.m. following their 30 minute press conference.
