XU VB: Xavier Falls to Dayton in Four in the Atlantic-10 Conference Championship

DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball team fell to the Dayton Flyers, 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21) in the finals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship Sunday afternoon at UD's Frericks Center. Xavier's Sarah Brown, Amé White and Aubree Smith were named to the All-Tournament team.

Xavier (20-11) was led by Brown and White who notched 13 and 12 kills respectively. Brown tallied her seventh double-double of the season (13K-16D). White's 12 kills marks a career-best. White had a .500 clip to lead the Musketeers to go with her five assisted blocks. Smith had her fifth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 10 digs. The rookie assisted on four blocks as well.

Sophomore Kelsey Dunaway was the third Musketeer to tally double-digit kills, with 11. Red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith had a career night at the net, notching eight assisted blocks to go with her eight kills. Junior Stephanie Vorherr passed 15 digs and was one assist shy of a double-double.

The Flyers opened up the first set going on a 8-1 run, yet the Musketeers were able to get within three on several occasions. XU was able to get five straight points off of the serve of junior Elizabeth Lucich.

Xavier was able to keep the second set close initially, but were unable to surpass a 10-0 run by the Flyers. The Musketeers came out of intermission rejuvenated. The score was tied on only three occasions with Xavier leading the majority of the way.

"We never gave up," said Vorherr. "We are a tough group and continuing to fight even when we are down is the Xavier identity."

Dayton was led by Megan Campbell, Yvonne Marten and Rachel Krabacher who notched 16, 15 and 14 kills. UD was hitting at .238 compared to XU's .167. The Musketeers out blocked the Flyers 12-10.

DAYTON, Ohio – For the third consecutive season University of Dayton volleyball captured the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship title after defeating Xavier on Sunday afternoon in Frericks Center (25-11, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21). The Flyers have won both the A-10 tournament and regular season titles in each of the past three seasons.

Dayton’s seventh A-10 tournament title ensured the program’s fifth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior outside hitter Yvonne Marten earned the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player, while sophomore middle blocker Megan Campbell, junior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher and junior setter Samantha Selsky were named to the All-Championship team.

Dayton has won 10 of the last 12 matches against Xavier, improving its series lead over Xavier to 47-25. In A-10 tournament play, the Flyers are 5-0 against the Musketeers.

Before making their fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, the Flyers will host Notre Dame at Frericks Center in the final regular season match of the 2011 season.

Selection Sunday is on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Dayton Volleyball Team Sweeps Charlotte, Improving To 6-0 In Atlantic 10 Play

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – University of Dayton volleyball defeated Charlotte in straight sets on Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena to remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 Conference play after winning its ninth consecutive match and 31st consecutive match against an A-10 opponent (25-19, 25-16, 25-19).

The Flyers picked up the eighth sweep during their nine-match winning streak, led by junior outside hitter Rachel Krabacher with 12 kills and sophomore Shayne Brown with nine kills on a .615 hitting percentage. Junior setter Samantha Selsky guided the Flyers to a .302 team hitting percentage with 32 assists while adding four kills on seven swings.

“Sam (Selsky) set a really smart match today,” Head Coach Kelly Sheffield said. “Charlotte is a tough team to play – forget about their record. Their setter puts a different type pressure on your because she attacks so much. It puts a totally different pressure on our team and stretches us out a lot. We held it together nicely today.”

The 49ers’ senior setter Sheri Davis nearly reached a triple-double in just three sets, recording seven kills, 22 assists and nine digs. Charlotte slips to 6-10 and 0-5 in conference play after losing its seventh consecutive match.

While helping hold Charlotte to a .079 hitting percentage, junior libero Paige Vargas notched a match-high 15 digs. The Flyers out-blocked Charlotte, 8.0-to-4.0, led by five block-assists from freshman middle Isolde Hannan. It is the third time this season Hannan has paced the Flyers in blocks during a match.

The Flyers return to Dayton next Friday to host rival Xaiver at 7 p.m. ET at the Frericks Center. The teams stand alone at the top of the Atlantic 10 standings – Dayton at 6-0 and Xavier at 5-1 in league play.

“Dayton-Xavier volleyball is one of the best rivalries in college athletics where both teams are consistently at the top of the conference standings,” Sheffield said. “The match on Friday should be a barn-burner.”

Dayton has won the last three last matches with Xavier – including the last meeting, in which Dayton swept Xavier to win the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship title in Cincinnati.
