Miami's Lane Carico Named Finalist for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Miami’s Carico Named Finalist for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
Hurricanes senior is school’s all-time leader in kills
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Lane Carico of the University of Miami has been selected as one of 10 finalists for this year’s Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Carico, an outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, Calif., became Miami’s all-time leader in kills during the second set of the Hurricanes’ 3-0 win over Duke on Sunday, Oct. 2. The 2010 AVCA Third Team All-America player currently has 1,532 kills throughout her career. She also ranks second all-time in points (1,733), third in kills per set (3.75), third in digs (1,505), fourth in service aces (109) and eighth in sets played (409).
On the campaign, Carico has helped the Hurricanes to their first-ever regular season ranking with the Canes getting as high as No. 20 in Week Five. Carico is fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in kills with 186 (3.44 per set), fifth in digs with 233 (4.31 per set) and fourth in points with 212.5 (3.94 per set). She’s also second on the team with 15 service aces.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on either the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website or the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through November 21. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, which will be played December 15 and 17 in San Antonio.

DURHAM, N.C. – The reigning ACC Champion Duke volleyball team is ranked No. 17 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday.
The Blue Devils, who advanced all the way to the NCAA Round of Eight last season, are coached by 2010 ACC and East Region Coach of the Year Jolene Nagel and five starters from last season’s ACC Championship team. Included in that group are ACC Player of the Year Kellie Catanach, NCAA All-Regional selection Sophia Dunworth and All-ACC selections Christiana Gray, Ali McCurdy and Amanda Robertson.
Duke, which upended High Point, Ohio and Missouri on the way to the NCAA Regional Final last season, was ranked No. 18 in the final AVCA Coaches Poll last season. The Blue Devils ended their season with a 3-1 loss to eventual NCAA Champion Penn State in University Park, Pa., but were the only team in the entire NCAA Tournament to win a set from the reigning national champions.
Duke opens the 2011 season at the Duke Invitational on Friday, August 26, against Furman in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will look to earn their seventh straight NCAA Tournament berth while pursuing their fourth ACC Championship of the past six seasons.
Wake Forest Volleyball Completes First Practice of 2011
Demon Deacons look to improve upon last year’s 19-12 season
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team began the 2011 season with its first practice of the year Friday morning at Reynolds Gym.
Under the guidance of seventh-year head coach Heather Kahl Holmes, the Demon Deacons are hoping to improve upon one of its best seasons in school history.
In 2010, Wake Forest finished the year with a 19-12 record and an 11-9 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 11 wins in conference play are the most by any Demon Deacon squad in school history.
There were several familiar faces in the gym, as Wake Forest is bringing back nine players from last year’s team, including 2010 All-ACC selection Andrea Beck and 2010 Preseason All-ACC selection Kadija Fornah.
The duo will look to pace the Deacon offense as they did a year ago. Fornah led the 2010 squad with 327 kills, while Beck was just behind her in second place with 312 kills.
Beck will also serve as a co-captain this year alongside senior defensive specialist Cambrey Oehler.
Joining the nine returners in the gym was a group of five freshmen who will look to have an immediate impact on the Wake Forest volleyball program. Mary Hoey and Jazmen Russell will be seeking time on the outside, while Ashlee Rusk (MB), Danae Rosendall (S) and Dani Thompson (L/DS) will also be competing for playing time.
The volleyball team will have a short rest before returning to the gym at 5 p.m. for their second session of the day.
The Deacs open their season on September 2 when they host Arkansas at the Deacon Invitational at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym. Admission for the season opener, as well as all home Wake Forest volleyball matches, will be free for all spectators.
New student group for Florida State indoor volleyball introduced for 2011 season
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – With the 2011 season approaching fast, Florida State University indoor volleyball fans have an opportunity to become part of a new student section called “Poole and The Gang,” modeled after current head coach Chris Poole and derived from the famous R&B funk band Kool and The Gang.
“The fans at our matches can make such a difference and really swing the momentum,” Poole said. “In a sport like volleyball you see it so often where fan support can really help sway the outcome. Since my staff and I have been here we’ve seen some tremendous fan support and have won some big matches at home.
“With this student section, we’re hoping to continue our great fan support. With the current renovations going on at Tully Gym, I think our fans will really enjoy the new look and changes to the facility. We’re hoping to make this student section a tradition down the road and enhance our match-day atmosphere even more.”
Membership advantages to the group include a free FSU volleyball T-shirt, reserved seating for matches at Tully Gym and other perks throughout the season. The Seminoles are expecting another strong year and host several intriguing opponents at home, including reigning Elite Eight participant Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Tulsa.
One of the top matches this season comes against conference rival Miami as Tully Gym will be the site of an ESPNU contest between the two in-state foes. Match time for the Seminoles and Hurricanes is at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
With seven of its 12 home opponents being 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, FSU will need to ride the momentum of its fans throughout the season. For information on joining the new “Poole and The Gang” student section, please contact volleyball marketing assistant Justin Slaton at jslaton@fsu.edu for more details.
The band Kool and The Gang is known for several of its memory-sticking hits back in the 1970s and early 1980s, including arguably its greatest hit “Celebrate,” which is played at several sporting contests after the home team has earned a victory.
Duke volleyball junior Nailah Waterfield will keep a weekly blog this season chronicling the Blue Devils' 2010-11 campaign. Last season, Duke won the 2010 ACC Championship, made the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year and advanced all the way to the Round of Eight.
Look for Nailah's blog every week during the season on GoDuke.com.
Preseason is finally here! It is one of the most exciting times of the year for Duke Volleyball. The offseason is finally over, preseason is here, and the season is in sight. The past couple of days have been packed with excitement, anticipation, emotion, and a little bit of nerves… okay maybe a lot of nerves for our freshman. Excited to get started, anticipating what may lie ahead for this group of 13, emotion as this is the last preseason we will be spending with Kellie, Amanda, Sophia, and Kayla. And most importantly a fire within, all 13 of us to compete, achieve, and win.
For me, and some of the older girls, preseason has started off as a beautiful combination of both the familiar and the strange. I feel quite old saying that the tradition of getting our gear, picture day (and the subsequent stress of waiting to see your GoDuke picture). That first team meeting, fitness testing, and the string of necessary meetings coach schedules are feeling quite familiar.
There are also of course some unfamiliar feelings floating around that are both strange and exciting. Strange seeing our four freshmen who have spent the past two years visiting, suit up in their official Duke Volleyball gear. Strange but exciting getting so much coaching after we all just spent three months playing without a coach in sight. Unfamiliar returning to an apartment instead of a dorm after a long day of practice along with juggling double days with finals as we all still have a week left of class.
There is a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. An annual trip to the lake house that involves home videos and home cooked meals. Our first team practice in Cameron as soon as the new floor is finished. The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors moving into East, West, and Central campus respectively. And a goodbye dinner to our beloved academic advisor Kacy King, a woman who has meant more to this program then most could comprehend. She has helped every one of us hold it all together when we were sure we were falling apart. A supportive friend, brilliant mentor, and utterly perfect example of what we all aspire to be as young women.
UMiami Volleyball to be Televised Twice during 2011 Season
Canes face FSU and Virginia Tech in ACC televised contests.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that the University of Miami will have two nationally-televised matches during the 2011 season, that coming from ACC Commissioner John Swofford on Friday morning. A total of nine volleyball matches featuring ACC teams are scheduled to be televised during the 2011 season.
ESPNU has announced that all of its Wednesday Night Women’s Volleyball broadcasts, now in its second year, will be broadcast in high definition. Two of the ACC’s matches will be featured on the program, including the Miami at Florida State match on September 14th and the North Carolina at Duke match in October.
Miami’s second televised matchup will come from inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex on October 30 against Virginia Tech. That match will be on Regional Sports Network (RSN).
Through an agreement with Raycom Sports and several sublicense agreements, the ACC’s regional syndication distribution (referred to as RSN), will include Fox Sport South, Fox Sports Florida and other regional cable partners throughout the ACC footprint to be announced later.
The conference as a whole will be looking to improve on one of its best years after finishing the 2010 season with a 108-39 (.739) out-of-conference record, the best in ACC history. The conference has sent a league-record five teams to the NCAA Volleyball Championship for two-straight years and has had a representative reach the regional final in both years as well, with Florida State advancing to the Round of 8 in 2009 and Duke repeating the feat in 2010.
The television schedule will feature volleyball matches on eight different campuses and include 10 of the conference’s 12 teams.

Duke Junior Nailah Waterfield to Write Weekly Volleyball Blog on GoDuke.com
August 1, 2011
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior Nailah Waterfield will write a weekly blog for GoDuke.com chronicling the Blue Devil volleyball program’s 2011 season. The weekly journal will recap the team’s trials on and off the court as the Blue Devils seek to repeat as ACC Champions.
The blog will be available every Monday on GoDuke.com. The first post is currently available on GoDuke.com at the link below.
Last season, Waterfield, a defensive specialist from Long Beach, Calif. (Long Beach Poly), helped Duke to one of its best seasons in program history. The Blue Devils won its third ACC Championship of the past five years, made the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year and advanced to the NCAA Round of Eight where they fell 3-1 to eventual NCAA Champion Penn State in University Park, Pa. Duke returns nine letterwinners and five starters from that team.
Duke Volleyball Blog #1 (August 1, 2011) We’re back! After a cold winter, a great spring, and half of a summer, the Duke University Volleyball team is back in Durham and ready for a new season. With new freshmen, new sand courts, and a new commitment to this program, our team is more than excited to be back. This being my first blog in a series of many to come, I would like to give everyone some insight of where we’ve been, where we are, and what’s to come.
Duke Volleyball had a record-breaking season in 2011. We worked hard, met our goals, and accomplished things noone expected of us. We won the ACC title, lost only one game at home, and went further in the NCAA tournament than any Duke volleyball team ever has before. We had an exciting tournament run, but eventually fell in the Round of Eight to Penn State at University Park. We finished the year proud, but not satisfied. To us, 2011 was simply a taste of how great we could truly be; a sneak peak at our true potential; a rallying point. We remembered this all spring and continued to grow. After two months of tough workouts in the gym, in the weight room, and on the turf, we parted ways for the first half of summer.
Our team was all over the country (and me overseas) for the first half of the summer. Kellie Catanach and Ali McCurdy headed home to Tampa, Florida for some sunshine and family time. Kayla Kirk headed back to Houston, Texas and spent weeks prepping for the LSAT. Megan Hendrickson went home to Michigan to work with her father and catch up with her good friend Lake Michigan. Chelsea Cook headed home to Kansas where she spent time nannying. Sophia Dunworth and Christiana Gray were here in Durham. Soph was participating in the Cape internship, a medical internship at the Duke hospital that is only open to female athletes and Baldwin Scholars. While T was training at Duke and taking a class. Both T (Christiana) and Sophia worked out in the Duke weight room with Amanda Robertson who made the trek from Holly Springs, North Carolina to workout with her teammates after a couple weeks of family vacations. And of course, I spent six weeks in West Africa. And let's not forget the freshmen. Maggie Deichmeister, Jeme Obeime, Kelsey Williams, and Brittney Balser enjoyed their final days at home, said goodbye to their high school friends and got ready to start the Duke Experience.
And then, on July 5th, all thirteen Duke volleyball players came back to Durham. There is a good possibility this is the first time this has ever happened in Duke Volleyball history. Every single girl, back, taking classes, working out every day all together. Making the commitment to our team, our coaches, and our University to do everything we can to reach our full potential. We lift, run, and play volleyball both indoors and outdoors as close to seven days a week as we can. We have also been spending a lot of time together outside the gym. We are almost all living together, celebrating birthdays, seeing movies, coaching camps, going to concerts, crashing pools, and anything else that sounds fun.
I am so excited for this season and for all of our awesome fans to get a chance to learn a little bit more about who the girls that make up Duke University’s volleyball team are. My teammates are unbelievable athletes, students and people, and I can’t wait for you all to get a chance to see this! Preseason starts in seven days and our first game is in 26. Stay tuned.
