OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Texas senior All-America middle blocker Rachael Adams has been named one of the 10 finalists for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in collegiate volleyball. The award recognizes volleyball student-athletes who excel in the four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

 

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in all four categories.

 

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

 

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on either the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website or the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through November 21. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

 

In the classroom, Adams has been a leader for the Longhorns as she works toward her degree in advertising and takes classes in Texas' creative sequence. A two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team pick, Adams is a four-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

 

In 2010, Adams was an AVCA All-America First Team and Volleyball Magazine All-America First Team choice. She was a member of the 2010 NCAA Austin Regional All-Tournament Team and garnered AVCA All-Central Region First Team lauds. As a junior, Adams ranked No. 1 in the NCAA statistics with a .443 hitting percentage, while leading the Horns and ranking sixth in the Big 12 with 1.18 blocks per-set

 

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, which will be played December 15 and 17 in San Antonio.

AUSTIN, Texas – The 10^th-ranked Texas Volleyball team extended its home winning streak to 23 matches, Wednesday night as it swept past Texas Tech at Gregory Gymnasium. The 25-17, 25-11, 25-22 victory improved the Longhorns to 11-4 on the year and 4-1 in Big 12 play, while the Red Raiders fell to 14-6 overall and 0-5 in league action.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Webster headlined the Horns’ attack with 11 kills on .320 hitting, while senior All-America middle blocker Rachael Adams connected for seven kills and hit at a .600 clip. Freshman outside hitter Haley Eckerman added nine kills, while sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Palmer and senior libero Sydney Yogi each tallied three service aces.

 

Texas jumped out to an early edge in the first, taking advantage of an 8-2 rally fueled by two kills from junior opposite hitter Sha’Dare McNeal that gave UT a 15-9 lead. Webster kills allowed the Horns to maintain the margin before two late Adams kills and a pair of Tech errors propelled Texas to a 25-17 set win.

 

In the second, the Longhorns used a rally headlined by the strong serve of Yogi to claim a 20-9 lead before eventually closing out the set 25-11 on an Eckerman kill.

 

The Horns built their lead to 19-9 on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Haley Cameron in the third and forced set point at the 24-17 mark, but had to stave off a 5-0 Tech rally to close out the set 25-22.

 

Texas returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Kansas State. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Central.

 

POST-MATCH NOTES

·         Texas’ win improved its all-time record against Texas Tech to 71-9-2 and 33-3 in Austin.

·         Texas’ victory extended its home winning streak to 23 matches, a mark that ties for third-longest in program history.

·         The win extended UT’s Big 12 home winning streak to 28 matches.

·         Texas out-hit Texas Tech, .323-to-.116.

·         The Longhorns equaled a season-high with nine team service aces in the win.

Opening statement: I thought we did a nice job today. Especially after we were able to get our passing down after game one. With the new lineup there is going to be some relationship issues, but the things we thought we were going to get like a lot more balance from our team, and Rachael Adam’s hitting numbers going up due to Sha’Dare pulling extra blockers over. Ultimately we were able to get a lot of players in tonight and see them play, and I was very happy about that.

 

On closing matches out: We had a lot of subs in there, and I elected to roll the dice by leaving Bailey (Webster) in there instead of Amber (Roberson). But I wanted to see how we would react to that situation in case we needed to go to it in a bigger match.

 

On their good defensive play: I thought we did a pretty good job. Our blocking numbers were low, but our digging numbers were up. I knew that we would get a lot better blocking on the left side with Bailey, and we did a good job on the left side just controlling balls. I would have liked for our blocking numbers to be a bit higher, but ultimately I was pleased.

 

On the low blocking numbers: We got a lot of touch blocks and soft blocks, which helped us slow balls down. They didn’t have a lot of balls hit to the wood and when that happens we are usually pretty successful. Overall I think there are still some things we can get better at, but overall I was very pleased with our performance tonight.

 

Junior, UTIL. Sha’Dare McNeal:

On being back: It feels great being back on the court and supporting my teammates. It’s been kind of a challenge, but everyday getting in the practice gym has helped me get back to where I was. The nerves were definitely there, and it has been an adjustment in learning to trust my knee.

 

Freshman, OH.Haley Eckerman:

On the offensive performance: I think we are always happy with a win, but we know we can still get better.

 

On closing out sets: It is something we need to work on, but all that really matters in the end is getting the win.

 

On the recent time off: It was nice having time off, and we had some really good practices, but it is definitely an adjustment to come back out and play a game after all that time off.

No. 19 Iowa Cyclones Volleyball Team Upsets No. 9 Gators on the Road

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 19 Cyclones (7-0, 0-0 Big 12) scored their first win over a top-10 team since the 2009 season on Monday, upsetting No. 9 Florida (6-1, 0-0 SEC) in five hard-fought sets (25-19, 29-27, 17-25, 18-25, 16-14).

“Florida is a great team,” Cyclones head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “The Gators are a very physical team and I thought we did a good job of staying aggressive in fifth game. We did a good job of keeping the pressure on them. The win is a team effort.”

Senior Kelsey Petersen led the Cyclones with a career-best 15 kills. Setter Alison Landwehr recorded her first double-double of the season with 52 assists and 11 digs and redshirt freshman Hannah Willms had a career day with 12 kills and 12 digs for her first career double-double performance.

Jamie Straube added 13 kills for the Cyclones and Carly Jenson and libero Kristen Hahn were in double-digits with 15 digs and 11 digs, respectively.

Despite the well-balanced attack from Iowa State, in the deciding set it was mistakes that crippled the Gators and gave the Cyclones the edge. The Gators had nine errors, five off serves, during the set and an attack error by Kelly Murphy ended the match.

A battle from the start, Iowa State collected five blocks and held Florida to .029 hitting to take the first set.

Offense saved the day in set two as the Cyclones came back from facing two set points to win the set 29-27. Tenisha Matlock, Petersen and Willms each had four kills in the set to lead the Cyclones to a .361 hitting percentage and the 2-1 match lead.

Set three belonged to Florida as the Gators jumped on Iowa State early and hit .469 in the set behind four kills each by Kristy Jaeckel and Tangerine Wiggs. The Gators recorded three blocks in the set, slowing the Iowa State offense to .229, the first set of sub-.300 hitting for the Cyclones on the day.

The Gators held strong in set four, grabbing six blocks and halting the Iowa State offense which hit .060. Petersen had four kills for the second-straight set and Straube added four kills in the 25-18 set loss.

Overall, Jaeckel led the Gators with 16 kills and Murphy scored a double-double with 29 assists and 21 digs.

 Next weekend the Cyclones are in Fargo, N.D. to face North Dakota State on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s match is slated for 7 p.m. CDT with Saturday’s to follow at 1 p.m.

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch will host her first-ever live blog on Wednesday Aug. 24 from 1-1:30 p.m. CDT, to talk with fans about the Cyclones’ upcoming season.

 

In six seasons with the Cyclones, Johnson-Lynch has turned around a program that had posted only 13 wins over Big 12 opponents in program history upon her arrival in 2005. The fastest Cyclone coach to ever reach 100 wins, Johnson-Lynch has led Iowa State to four 20-win seasons and five-consecutive postseason appearances, including last season’s 20-9 NCAA tournament team.

 

Returning five starters from their 2010 roster, the Cyclones enter 2011 as the No. 18 team in the country, picked second in the coaches’ Big 12 Preseason Poll behind No. 4 Texas. Juniors Jamie Straube and Alison Landwehr were selected to the all-conference preseason team.

 

Boasting the nation’s No. 25 recruiting class, Iowa State also returns outside hitter Rachel Hockaday, who missed last season with a knee injury, and the league’s preseason newcomer of the year, redshirt freshman Hannah Willms.

 

Wednesday’s forum will open at 12:50 p.m. CDT to allow fans to begin submitting questions before Johnson-Lynch begins taking questions at 1 p.m.

Lincoln - The Nebraska volleyball team will enter the 2011 season ranked fifth in the AVCA Coaches Poll, which was released Monday afternoon. The Huskers (1,1221 points) were one of Big Ten three teams earn a spot in the top 10, joining No. 1 Penn State and No. 8 Illinois.

The Huskers welcome back a strong team in 2011 that returns All-Americans Brooke Delano and Hannah Werth, while Werth was also the 2010 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Nebraska finished the year with a 29-3 record, captured its 12th Big 12 title during its final season in the league and made a trip to the NCAA Regional round for the 17th straight season.

The rest of the preseason top 10 was rounded out by No. 2 USC, No. 4 Texas, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Washington, No. 9 Florida and No. 10 Hawaii. Along with the three teams in the top ten, four other Big Ten teams secured a spot in the top-25, including No. 12 Minnesota, No. 13 Purdue, No. 21 Ohio State and Michigan, who tied for the No. 24 spot with Tennessee.

Nebraska and Stanford have been the two most consistent teams in the AVCA's 416 all-time polls, as each has been ranked in every poll dating back to 1982. Nebraska's 81 weeks in the No. 1 spot is still tops on the list, while Penn State sits second at 67 weeks. When it comes to being ranked in the top-10, Stanford holds a one-week advantage over the Huskers, 383-382.

During the non-conference season, the Huskers are set to meet two top-25 teams. The Huskers will visit No. 15 Colorado State on Friday, Sept. 2, before ending their non-conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 17, with a match against No. 18 Iowa State ath the Devaney Center. Nebraska will play its first Big Ten Conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the NU Coliseum when the Huskers welcome Penn State.

Fans will have their first opportunity to see the Huskers at the Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available online at Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8-BIGRED.

BIg 12 Preseason Volleyball Tournaments For Texas

Texas opens the season with the first of its two home tournaments, on Friday-Saturday, Aug. 26-27. The Horns travel to Stanford for the second-annual Nike Big Four Classic on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 9-10. Texas returns home the following weekend for its second home tourney on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17.

Big 12 Preseason Volleyball Tournaments For Missouri

On Aug. 26 Mizzou plays host to the annual Tiger Invitational at the Hearnes Center.  Mizzou will then travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash.

Mizzou will then play in two more tournaments with the first stop coming at the Denver Pioneer Classic on Sept. 9.  The Tigers will then head to the east coast for the American Classic in Washington DC on Sept. 16.

 

 

Big 12 Preseason Volleyball Tournaments For Kansas

The Jayhawks’ home slate opens Sept. 2-3 for the Jayhawk Invitational. Prior to its home tournament, Kansas makes its season debut at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational Aug. 26-27 in Athens, Ga.

The following weekend KU will participate in the Northern Iowa Invitational, Sept. 9-10 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Kansas then makes a stop in Chicago, Ill., for the DePaul Invitational, Sept. 16-17, in its last action before Big 12 Conference play.

After beginning the season at the TCU Tournament Aug. 26-27, the Red Raiders will host the Texas Tech Invitational on Sept. 2-3.

Baylor was picked sixth for the second consecutive season

 

IRVING, Texas – For the second consecutive year, Baylor’s volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the 2011 Big 12 Preseason Poll, conference officials announced Wednesday.

 

Baylor garnered 30 total points in the preseason poll of the league’s head coaches, just two points behind fifth-place Missouri. Texas was picked to win the Big 12 for the third time in the last four seasons, earning seven first-place votes. Iowa State earned the remaining two first-place votes and tied with Oklahoma for second in the poll with 53 points. Texas A&M was picked fourth at 43 points, ahead of Missouri and Baylor.

 

Led by preseason All-Big 12 selection Torri Campbell, Baylor will look to improve on its 16-15 overall record and 9-11 Big 12 mark. Finishing sixth in the Big 12 in 2010, Baylor ranked first in the league and third in the NCAA in digs-per-set, while also recording more than 10.0 team blocks in 10 matches. The Bears managed better season totals than their opponents in hitting percentage, kills, assists, digs and total blocks.

 

Baylor will open the season traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Mortar Board Premier hosted by Purdue University on Aug. 26-27. BU will face the Boilermakers on Aug. 26 at 6 p.m., then play College of Charleston at 11 a.m. and VCU at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Texas Volleyball tabbed preseason favorite for Big 12 title

After winning or sharing the Big 12 championship three times in the last four years, Texas is picked atop the league’s preseason poll.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Volleyball team has been selected to finish first in the 2011 Big 12 Conference race in a vote of league head coaches. It marks the third time in four seasons (2008, 2009) that the Longhorns have been picked to win the league.

 

Texas received seven of the possible nine first-place votes, while tallying 63 points overall. Iowa State earned the other two first-place votes and tied Oklahoma for second in the rankings with 53 points. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

 

Texas A&M (43) and Missouri (32) round out the top five, while Baylor (30), Kansas (22), Kansas State (20) and Texas Tech (8) fill out the poll.

 

The Horns return 10 letterwinners and five starters from their 2010 squad that concluded the season with a 27-6 record and an 18-2 mark in Big 12 play. The Longhorns have won four Big 12 titles in program history, claiming the crown in 1997, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

 

Texas kicks off its 2011 season on Friday, Aug. 26 when it plays host to Pepperdine in the Burnt Orange Classic. First serve is set for 8 p.m. Central on the Longhorn Network.
