RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Volleyball Team has been selected fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Coaches Poll, released Wednesday.
The Rams received 60 points, two fewer than Northeastern (62) and seven behind James Madison (67). VCU received one first place vote. Defending champion Delaware was voted the CAA preseason favorite with 72 points, including five of a possible nine first place votes.
VCU, led by seventh-year Head Coach James Finley, is coming off a third-place finish in the league. The Rams were 13-20 overall last season, including 9-5 in league play. The Rams have reached the CAA Championship Match three times during Finley’s tenure and won the crown in 2005.
In 2011, the Black and Gold return four starters, including junior setter Ciara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.), junior outside hitter Kristin Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) and senior middle Courtney Hott (Fredericksburg, Va.). VCU welcomes six newcomers, including Tennessee transfer Amanda Friday (Springfield, Va.), and will look to offset the loss of All-CAA performers Kelsie Clegg and Mariel Frey.
The Rams begin the 2011 season on Sunday, Aug. 21 with the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage at 3 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The scrimmage will feature the entire 2011 VCU squad, as well as a team of VCU alumni.
The regular season kicks off Aug. 26-27, when the Rams travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to take on the College of Charleston, Baylor and 13th-ranked Purdue.
