Sun Devils head to Tucson Nov. 22 for Territorial Cup match

LOS ANGELES – Erica Wilson’s 10 kills and .714 attack percentage led the Arizona State volleyball’s offense, but it was not enough as the Sun Devils were topped by UCLA 3-0 with set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 29-27.

ASU is 8-21 overall and 4-16 in conference action while UCLA improves to 24-5 and 17-4 in the Pac-12 with the win.

Nora Tuioti-Mariner also chipped in 10 kills and Sonja Markanovich had seven of her own for a second-best attack percentage on the day at .385.

In the opening frame, Ashley Kastl recorded six kills as a pair came back-to-back from Shannan McCready at the 23-22 mark to put ASU back into the game after starting the set down 17-9.

Arizona State stayed within reach of the Bruins, having 15 kills to their 14, but five key blocks were enough for UCLA to take the set 25-23.

 

 

 

 

 

ASU shook off the rocky start of the first set when it led the second stanza to the 7-7 point. Fromthere the Bruins held a steady two-point lead to force the Sun Devils into a timeout at 19-16. UCLA continued its run to head into the break up 2-0 after taking the second set 25-19.

With 12 ties, the Sun Devils did not shy away in the final set of the match. Hitting at a .217 clip as ateam, ASU tied it at 10-all, then went on a five-point run for its biggest lead of the day at five.

Not to be outdone, UCLA battled back to take a lead at 22-20. The drama of the final set was not finished as ASU tied it three more times before the Bruins forced the finaltwo-point surge to capture the match with a set score of 29-27.

Oregon State: Shaw Posts Career Match, but Beavers Fall in Four to No. 5 Cardinal

 

 

 

Stanford, Calif. – Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai’i) hit .352 for a career-high 24 kills but the Oregon State volleyball team (15-15, 7-13 Pac-12) fell in four (19-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-25) to the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal (21-6, 15-6 Pac-12) on Sunday afternoon in Maples Pavilion.

 

“We really competed hard against [Stanford],” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “But, we kind of let our focus go in the fourth set. We were ahead 7-3, and we really just let them get back into that set. on some untimely errors on our side of the net.

 

We attacked well throughout the match, other than in that fourth set. And Corinna Mommert had a really good performance off the bench, coming in as an outside hitter and had a really good serving match. Also, Dre Shaw hit really well today. Now we’ve just got to be ready for the Ducks on Tuesday.”

 

Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) backed up Shaw with her 11 kills effort, also recording four blocks – two solo.

 

 

 

Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) led four players with double-figure digs numbers with a match-high 19, while junior Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) posted a double-double effort with 36 assists and 17 digs. Shaw recorded 15 digs, and junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) notched 11 digs.

 

Junior Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) earned five blocks, two solo, of the teams 10.0 total with redshirt Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore.) rounding out the team’s top three blockers with four block assists.

 

The Cardinal was led by Rachel Williams’ double-double with 21 kills and 13 digs.

 

Oregon State returns home next for the first match of the Civil War Series, presented by PacificSource Health Plans and Northwest Ford Dealers, against No. 15 Oregon on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.

 

Oregon State Notes – Senior Dre Shaw killed a career-high 24 balls on a best 54 swings; Earning a double-double with 24 kills and 15 digs … Junior Megan McBride earned her 10^th double-double of the season, 15^th career, with 36 assists and 17 digs … Oregon State’s 58 kills, 52 assists and 71.0 points are the most this season in a four-set match.

No. 5 USC Wins In Four Sets Over Arizona State Women's Volleyball Team- October 8

 

TEMPE, Ariz. – Five different players registered double-digit kills Saturday as the No. 5 USC women’s volleyball team earned a four-set win (22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 29-27) against the Arizona State Sun Devils in a Pac-12 Conference match.  Alex Jupiter and Sara Shaw had 15 kills each for the Women of Troy.

With Arizona’s five-set win over UCLA tonight, USC now stands in first place in the Pac-12 Conference standings with an 8-1 record.  USC is now 13-3 on the season after its eighth-straight win and recording the longest win streak (eight) in conference play since the 2003 national championship season when the Women of Troy were a perfect 18-0.

Shaw (Austin, Texas) tied her career best for kills and shattered her personal high with 19 digs.  Senior All-America setter Kendall Bateman recorded a season-high 60 assists (15.00 aps) with 10 digs and four blocks while Lauren Williams had 12 kills and a season-high seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) while hitting .407 (12-1-27).  Hannah Schraer added 12 kills and a season-high five blocks while Katie Fuller had 11 kills and a season-high four blocks.  Sophomore libero Natalie Hagglund had a career-high 33 digs tonight.

Ashley Kastl led Arizona State (4-13, 0-8) with 23 kills and 10 digs while Erica Wilson had 14 kills and hit .400 (14-4-25).  Stephanie Preach led the defensive effort with 43 digs while Shannon McCready had 51 assists and 11 digs.

USC committed nine service errors, including two foot faults, but had 13.0 blocks as a team.

Kastl’s two kills helped put ASU ahead, 7-4, in the first set.  Shaw brought USC within one at 11-10 before the Sun Devils used their blocking for two straight points as part of a 5-2 run for the 16-12 score.  Kastl recorded two more kills and Stephanie Preach later added an ace to make it 20-16 for the Sun Devils.  At set point for Arizona State, the Trojans had three straight points before Kastl snapped USC’s streak of 21 straight set wins with the kill.

USC raced out to a 7-3 lead in the second set.  Two kills from Schraer helped the Trojans go up by six at 11-5.  Williams hit the overpass and added another kill to keep the advantage at 14-8.  Wilson terminated back-to-back for the Sun Devils, but Jupiter started four straight points as USC led, 18-10.  Shaw later stuffed Wilson for the solo block to make it 20-11 for the Trojans.  It was Arizona State’s turn to stave off set point with five straight before Shaw stopped the rally to tie the match.

Jupiter provided bookend kills on a Williams/Bateman block in the third set for a 9-7 USC lead.  Nora Tuioti-Mariner recorded the stuff block on Jupiter to give ASU the lead at 11-10.  Fuller later made it 15-14 for the Trojans before another service error by the Trojans and kill by Malia Bachynski put the Sun Devils ahead, 16-15.  After a USC timeout, the Women of Troy scored four straight as Shaw’s ace make it 19-16.  Tuioti-Mariner cut the deficit to one, but Bateman won a key joust at the night and teamed with Williams on a block to keep the Trojans up by three, 21-18.  Williams recorded a solo block with Fuller and Shaw giving the Women of Troy the lead, 2-1, in the match.

Williams compiled three kills early in the fourth with Schraer registering her own solo block as USC held the 8-3 advantage.  USC would later lead by 10 points at 15-5, but Arizona State used its defense to get back into the set.  After Shaw made it 21-11, the Sun Devils reeled off seven straight points as Jenny Teslevich’s ace made it a 21-18 score.  Williams gave match point to USC at 24-22, but Kastl got the sideout kill and Tuioti-Mariner and Sonja Markanovich tied the set with a block.  Both teams traded points to a 27-27 score on six straight sideouts.  Schraer put USC ahead again and Wilson’s next attempt sailed out of bounds as the Trojans were able to hold off the late Sun Devil rally.

USC returns home next weekend to host Oregon on Friday (Oct. 14) and Oregon State on Saturday (Oct. 15) with a 7 p.m. start for both matches.  A live video webcast with Gametracker live stats will be available on usctrojans.com.

Notes: USC’s 66 kills and 13.0 blocks in tonight’s match were season highs…Alex Jupiter now has 1,635 career kills and needs one kills to tie Lonise Norfleet (1987-90) for fourth place on USC’s all-time list…Kendall Bateman now has 3,946 career assists and moved into fourth place on USC’s all-time list, moving past Christine Brigman (1987-89) tonight.

USC OUTSIDE HITTER FALYN FONOIMOANA DECLARED INELIGIBLE FOR 2011 SEASON

 

                LOS ANGELES—Sophomore outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana has been declared ineligible for the 2011 season, USC head coach Mick Haley announced today. 

                Fonoimoana earned Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year honors last year after earning a starting position midway through the season.

                “We exhausted all of our resources in order to help Falyn retain her eligibility, “ said Haley.  “We have very high expectations of our student-athletes, on and off the court, here at USC.”

                No. 2 USC begins the 2011 season by playing in the AVCA Showcase (Aug. 26-27) in University Park, Pa. against No. 1 Penn State and No. 12 Minnesota.

USC women's volleyball ranked No. 2 in AVCA Preseason Poll

 

The USC women’s volleyball team has been ranked No. 2 in the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) preseason poll for the 2011 season.  USC is coming off its sixth NCAA Final Four appearance in the last 11 years after posting a 29-5 record. 

This is the first time since 2004 that USC will have at least three All-Americans returning on its roster with seniors Alex Jupiter, Kendall Bateman and Lauren Williams. 

The Women of Troy were picked to finish first in the Pac-12 Conference preseason coaches’ poll.USC begins the 2011 season by playing in the AVCA Showcase (Aug. 26-27) in University Park, Pa. against No. 1 Penn State and No. 12 Minnesota.  This season’s schedule includes matches against six of the top 12 teams ranked in the poll (No. 1 Penn State, No. 3 California, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Washington, No. 11 UCLA and No. 12 Minnesota).

The Pac-12 features five conference teams among the top-11 in the preseason voting. 

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association unveiled its preseason rankings today, and the Huskies will begin the 2011 season ranked seventh in the country. Washington ended the 2010 season sixth in the final AVCA poll after beginning the year ranked eighth.

 

The Huskies have finished in the Top-10 in the AVCA poll in seven of the past eight years, including last season. Penn State, which has won four consecutive NCAA titles, starts at No. 1 again this year. The Nittany Lions received 54 of 60 first place votes. Preseason Pac-12 favorites USC are ranked second, receiving five first place votes, and the last vote went to California, ranked third to start the season after its NCAA finals loss to Penn State last December.

 

The Big-12 checks in with Texas and Nebraska in the four and five spots, then it is Stanford at No. 6 and the Huskies at No. 7. Washington was slotted ahead of the Cardinal in the Pac-12 coaches poll which came out last week.

 

Number eight Illinois, No. 9 Florida, and No. 10 Hawai’i round out the Top-10. Pac-12 rival UCLA also comes in at No. 11, giving the Pac-12 four of the top-seven teams nationally and five in the top-eleven. Oregon and Arizona are also receiving votes.

 

Washington will face its first ranked opponent in the third match of the year, as Long Beach State checks in at No. 22. The Huskies will visit Long Beach for the Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational on the season’s first weekend, and will face LBSU on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m.
