IPFW Mastodon Volleyball Picked Third by Summit League Volleyball Coaches
Elmhurst, IL - Defending Summit League regular season co-champion IPFW was picked to finish third for the 2011 season by the league coaches, announced by the Summit League on Thursday.
IPFW, under the tutelage of 2010 Summit League Coach of the Year Kelley Hartley Hutton, returns three starters including 2010 Summit League Setter of the Year Megan Steenhuysen, received 64 points and one first-place vote. North Dakota State, last season's league tournament champion, was picked to finish first in the league with 78 points and six first-place votes, with South Dakota State picked second with 70 points and two first-place votes.
Southern Utah (54 points), Oakland (53 and one first place vote), Oral Roberts (43), IUPUI (32), UMKC (25), South Dakota (19), and Western Illinois (12), fell in line behind the Mastodons.
Middle hitter Alli Hook, libero Tessa McGill, and defensive specialist Jen Milligan all return to the starting lineup for IPFW, while Jessie Manwaring, Haley Emenhiser, and Megan Wiler also return after picking up key playing time a season ago, in addition to six strong newcomers (Madison Spence, Lauren Fulk, Hailie Ripley, Emily Spencer, Luiza Gomes, and Kendall Wienkes) adding depth and skill to the squad.
The Mastodons open the 2011 season on the road in Muncie, Indiana, at the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge, where the squad will face off against Loyola (Ill.) on August 27 and host Ball State a day later.
Tulane Volleyball: Green Wave Want to Attack Early and Often
(Kansas City, Mo.) – The UMKC volleyball team was picked to finish seventh in The Summit League Preseason Coaches Poll, the league announced today. The Kangaroos received 25 points, trailing sixth place IUPUI by seven points for the sixth spot in the poll.
Defending Summit League Volleyball Champion North Dakota State, who captured its second championship in three years, was picked to repeat in a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches. The Bison tallied six first-place votes and 78 points to lead the poll. South Dakota State finished second with two first-place votes and 70 points, while IPFW, the 2010 co-regular season champion, placed third with 64 points and one first-place vote. One point separated fourth and fifth place as Southern Utah tallied 54 points and Oakland collected 53 points and the final first-place vote. Rounding out the poll were Oral Roberts, IUPUI, UMKC, South Dakota and Western Illinois.
First year ‘Roo head coach Christi Posey returns all six starters and the libero from the 2010 squad, including 2009 Second Team all-Summit League selection Christiana McQuin. This year’s UMKC line-up will feature six former Summit League Players of the Week and 12 upperclassmen on the 13 person roster. Leading the offensive attack for the Kangaroos will be seniors Elizabeth Beck (294 kills, 2.53 kills/set, 276 digs) and Kelsey Knoche (293 kills, 2.50 kills/set, 360 digs), while fellow senior Nicole Kerkman (3.88 digs/set) will lead the squad’s defensive effort.
The Kangaroos open their regular season on Aug. 26-27 in West Point, N.Y., for three contests in the Black Knights Invitational. After three matches the following weekend at the Radford Tournament, the ‘Roos will kick-off their home schedule on Sep. 9-10 at the Kangaroo Klassic when UT Martin, Montana State and Belmont visit the SRC.
