San Jose State Spartans Volleyball Team Falls In Hawaii
Honolulu, Hawaii—Savanah Leaf led the San Jose State volleyball team Saturday night with 10 kills in a 25-21, 25-8, 25-19 loss at #9 Hawaii in the team’s final Western Athletic Conference match on the island of Oahu.
Playing in front of family and friends, three native Hawaiians in a Spartan uniform made contributions in the match. Setter Caitlin Andrade had 24 assists and a team-best eight digs, and Alex Akana had six kills and four blocks. Senior Brianna Amian made her final appearance in a San Jose State uniform, starting the match and recording two kills.
In all, 13 players saw action in the match for San Jose State. Hanah Blume and Taylor Japhet each came off the bench for three kills each. Kiely Piper added seven digs and two service aces.
San Jose State did give #9 Hawaii a few scares during the match. After trailing 7-2 early in the first set, the Spartans cut the lead to 12-10, forcing a Rainbow Wahine timeout and cut the score to one at 12-11 before Hawaii finally won 25-21.
In the third set, there were 11 tied scored and two lead changes. The Spartans took a 12-9 lead in part by two of Blume’s kills on the night. The team’s final lead of the night came at 13-12 before Hawaii took the lead for good. Hawaii got within one point at 15-14 on a Mary Alice O’Reilly kill before Hawaii won 25-19.
The Spartans continue on the road next week, this week on the other side of the country. The team plays at Louisiana Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. CDT, followed by a match at New Mexico State on Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT.
