LSU Volleyball Player Brittney Johnson Named COBRA Magazine Volleyball Setter of the Year
BATON ROUGE LSU setter Brittney Johnson garnered COBRA Magazines Setter of the Year award and was one of 15 players to be selected to the publications All-National First Team. The squad honors the top African-American collegiate players.
It marked the second straight season that the magazine has selected a LSU player to a top award as Brittnee Cooper won COBRAs 2009 National Player of the Year.
Johnson, an AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention pick, not only spearheaded the SEC but checked in No. 42 nationally with 10.80 assists per set. LSU wrapped up the 2010 season among the NCAAs Top 25 in assists per set (13.28), kills per set (14.35) and hitting percentage (.260).
The Baton Rouge native sparked four hitters to over 2.45 kills per set highlighted by Angela Bensend and Desiree Elliott, a pair of All-SEC First-Team honorees. She also secured a team-best 10 double-doubles.
COBRA Magazine is the first publication that primarily showcases the talents of players of African descent. COBRAs goal is to tell inspiring stories of black volleyball players that show young African American players that they too have opportunities to thrive in the sport despite cultural differences and economic disadvantages.
