FSU Sand Volleyball Players Pardon and Stepanova Capture Clash of Collegians Title
Florida State grabbed five of the top six places during bracket play at the tournament
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Senior Kate Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon won the Clash of the Collegians bracket play championship on Friday, as the Florida State sand volleyball team captured five of the top six places on day two of the event at the Aspire High Volleyball SuperCenter.
Stepanova and Pardon, FSU’s No.1 dual team, defeated their teammates, junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, in the finals.
“Jace was our team MVP,” Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. “It was a fantastic day for us. We learned so much about bracket play and so much about ourselves. Everyone had a good day and played great. This wraps up our first road trip and it was a lot of fun. I’m feeling very confident about this team, and we’ll know even more about how we stack up against the rest of the country next weekend (March 16-18) at USC’s tournament.”
The Seminoles (4-0) snagged 5-0 victories over Stetson and the College of Charleston on Thursday before beginning a 15-team double-elimination bracket play dual tournament.
Stepanova and Pardon edged Tiegs and Newgard in a three-set battle during bracket play early Friday. Tiegs and Newgard survived the loser’s bracket to face their teammates again in the finals. Stepanova and Pardon won the championship, however, 21-19, 21-18.
Senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels placed third, while the teams of freshman Stephanie Pellitteri and senior Mallory Kiley, and sophomore Jeassica McGregor and freshman Sarah Wickstrom tied for fifth.
Among 15 teams, the Seminoles’ squads grabbed five of the top six places.
Florida State returns to action when it hosts its first-ever regular season event on Tuesday versus Tulane at 4 p.m. at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.
