Penn State Women’s Volleyball Named Big Ten Women’s Team of the Year
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., June 21, 2011 – The Penn State women’s volleyball was honored by the Big Ten Conference as the Big Ten’s 2010-11 Women’s Team of the Year. The Nittany Lion women were also named the league’s Team of the Year in 2009-10.
The PSU women’s volleyball team made history once again during the 2010 season winning a fourth consecutive national championship with a 3-0 sweep of California on Dec. 18. The squad became the first Division I women’s volleyball team to win four NCAA titles in a row. With the six postseason wins, the Nittany Lions have 72 NCAA Tournament wins, which is fourth-best in Division I history, and have won 24 straight postseason matches to set an NCAA Division I volleyball record.
The squad, which finished with an overall record of 32-5, continued its dominance in the Big Ten last season winning its 14th overall and eighth straight Big Ten title. The team’s streak of eight consecutive titles is a conference record. Despite starting out Big Ten play going 3-3, the NittanyLions finished 16-4 in conference action to take the crown.
Penn State’s record-breaking 109-match winning streak came to an end last season almost three years to the day it began with a 3-0 loss to Stanford. The streak is the longest Division I women’s streak in history and second overall only to the Miami men’s tennis team’s streak of 137 straight matches. During the unprecedented streak, the Nittany Lions lost only 19 sets and won a record-breaking 111 straight sets.

Liberty University Volleyball Player Karyl Bacon Named Big South Conference Woman of the Year
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Big South Conference announced today that Liberty volleyball player Karyl Bacon has been named the Big South Conference’s Woman of the Year for 2010-11. The conference’s Woman of the Year award is sponsored by Big South corporate partner Musco Sports Lighting.
As the Big South Woman of the Year, Bacon is nominated as a candidate for the national NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The Temecula, Calif., native is the third Liberty student-athlete to receive the conference honor, joining Arlene Zelinskas (women’s track & field) in 2006-07 and Allyson Fasnacht (women’s basketball) in 2007-08.
A two-time all-conference honoree, including a first-team selection in 2010, Bacon was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Flames and helped Liberty capture four consecutive regular-season titles during her career – including the outright crown her senior season. She is the first player in program history to be a part of four regular-season conference championships, and helped Liberty advance to the NCAA Tournament as a freshman and sophomore.
Bacon was named to the Big South’s all-tournament team in 2008 and 2010 and she became the ninth player in Liberty history to join the 1,000-kill/1,000-dig club, ending her stellar career with 1,155 kills and 1,472 digs.
A three-time Big South Player of the Week selection in 2010, Bacon was third in the Big South this past season with 3.96 kills per set. She was named a Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU) Stellar Spiker team honorable mention, as well as all-national third team by COBRA Magazine. She also earned first-team all-state honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) following her senior season.
Liberty’s team captain the past three seasons, Bacon graduated last month with a 3.63 grade-point average in kinesiology, and was voted to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District III second team last fall. Bacon has been named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll each year at Liberty and has been a member of Liberty’s Dean’s List five times (Fall 2008, Spring 2008, Fall 2009, Spring 2010 and Fall 2010). In addition, she was named to the Big South Volleyball All-Academic team in 2010.
Bacon’s service and leadership activities include three years on Liberty’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and volunteering at volleyball clinics with the Special Olympics the past two years. In addition, Bacon has volunteered as a coach and participant at various volleyball camps and clinics -- including three years at a special clinic for ages 50-plus where she taught the game to first-time players.
The NCAA also allows conferences to nominate a second candidate if one of the two student-athletes is a minority/international student. Radford softball player Chelsea Kelley, a finalist for the Big South Woman of the Year award, is also nominated by the conference for the NCAA award.
Also nominated for the 2011 Big South Woman of the Year were Charleston Southern basketball player Katie Tull, Gardner-Webb track & field athlete Carrie Long, High Point basketball player Mackenzie Maier, Liberty tennis player Jordan Jenkins, Presbyterian College softball player Brittany Howell, UNC Asheville track & field athlete Natalie Pearson, VMI track & field athlete Zipporah McCann and Winthrop volleyball player Kaley Viola.
“I am always amazed at the accomplishments of our Woman of the Year nominees, and this year is no different,” said Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander. “These are outstanding young women that deserve this recognition and praise. They represent the highest ideals of collegiate athletics in the Big South.”
The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) will choose and announce the top 10 honorees in each division in August. From among those 30 candidates, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division in September. Finally, the members of the CWA will vote from among the top nine finalists to determine the 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year, which will be announced at the Woman of the Year Awards Dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 16, 2011. The Big South had its first national finalist in 2005 when Winthrop’s Janiva Willis was named one of the 10 finalists.

Jennifer Stinson Greeny Named Washington State Volleyball Coach
PULLMAN -- Jennifer Stinson Greeny is Washington State University’s new volleyball head coach, Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced Wednesday. Greeny becomes the 12th coach in the history of the Cougars volleyball program where she previously played and was an assistant coach during the program’s most successful years on the Palouse.
“Jen Greeny brings an excitement to this position that only a Cougar alumnus can bring,” Moos said. “She is a tireless worker who has proven her coaching ability by being successful in every location she has coached. She will serve as a fantastic role model for all of our student-athletes.”
Greeny has been the head volleyball coach at Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, Idaho) for the past four years, accumulating an impressive 112-24 record and .824 winning percentage while turning the Warriors’ program into one of the premier NAIA teams nationally. Named LCSC’s head coach in late spring of 2007, Greeny took the reins of a struggling program that was in the rebuilding process and led it to one of its most successful seasons in program history. Her teams have won four consecutive Frontier Conference regular season titles, four consecutive Frontier Conference tournament championships, as well as earning four consecutive berths to the NAIA National Tournament and finishing in the top 13 in the nation each year. The Warriors ended the 2010 season at 31-3 for a .912 winning percentage, the best all-time mark in the history of the program.
Greeny was named the Frontier Conference Coach of the Year for four consecutive years, and the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association’s 2010 Northwest Region Coach of the Year, for the fourth straight season.
“I want to thank Bill Moos and Dr. Floyd for this incredible opportunity,” Greeny said. “Being a Cougar is something extremely special and we are excited to be coming home.”
Jennifer Stinson graduated from Davenport High in Washington in 1995, where she was a stellar athlete. She was named one of Volleyball Magazine’s Fab Fifty Freshman recruits. She also stood out in track and basketball, where she finished her career as the state’s all-time leading scorer (both boys and girls) with 2,881 points. She led the Gorillas to two state basketball titles and she won three state high jump championships. Her prep accomplishments earned her numerous honors.
She went to WSU on a volleyball scholarship and became the seventh player in school history with 1,000 career kills. On WSU’s career list, Greeny ranks third in block assists (360), fourth in total blocks (419), seventh in solo blocks (59), and 10th in kills (1,006). She also trained with the U.S. National volleyball team during the summer of 1997 and was a three-time all-Pacific 10 Conference selection. Greeny trained with the U.S. National volleyball team but a knee injury kept her from playing at the World University Games in 1997. She also played one season on the Cougar women’s basketball team.
Greeny also excelled in the classroom where she was WSU’s Athlete of the Year in 1998-99. She was a CoSIDA District VIII Academic All-America first-team and second-team selection her final two years and was a Pac-10 Conference All-Academic selection three times.
She received her bachelor’s degree in education from WSU in December 1999 and spent the next half-year substitute teaching and coaching in Spokane until accepting the position as assistant volleyball coach at WSU.
