2009 OVC Players of the Week - September 14 2009
Offensive:
Stephanie Champine, OH, Sr., 5'10
Lambertville, Mich. - Austin Peay
Champine was named to the Chattanooga All-Tournament Team after leading the Lady Govs with 53 kills. She recorded 16 kills in both the Lady Govs' three-set victories (Chattanooga and SIU Edwardsville). Champine had 21 kills in the five-set loss to eventual tourney champ Loyola. In addition she did not post an attack percentage lower that .219 during the tournament - Chattanooga (.286), Loyola (.219) and SIUE (.295).
Defensive:
Molly Davis, L, Jr., 5'3
Muncie, Ind. - Southeast Missouri
Davis recorded just three receiving errors from her defensive position over the weekend. She extended her double-digit dig match streak to 29. Davis also played in her 100th match of her career against Ole Miss. She recorded a single-match school record with 30 digs against Ole Miss while not registering a single receiving error. It was her second 30-plus dig match of the season and eighth of her career. Davis had a team-high 22 digs in the match against Georgia Tech. She finished the weekend with a match-best 20 digs versus Clemson.
Setter:
Melanie Culp, S, Jr., 5'6
Indianapolis, Ind. - Tennessee Tech
Culp dished out 124 assists in the Louisville Tournament, including a career-best 59 versus Liberty. She registered 37 assists against Louisville and 28 against Toledo. She totaled 13 digs and a pair of blocks over the three matches.
2009 Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Team Notes
Austin Peay (0-0 OVC; 6-4 overall): Austin Peay went 2-1 to finish second at the Chattanooga Invitational. The Lady Govs defeated Chattanooga (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) and SIU Edwardsville (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) while falling to Loyola (23-25, 17-25, 29-27, 13-15). Senior Stephanie Champine and junior Taylor Skinner were named to the all-tournament team. Champine recorded 53 kills and 46 digs over the three matches. Four different Lady Govs recorded a 10-kill performance at Chattanooga, led by Champine's performance. Junior Kayla Granthan recorded 14 kills against SIUE, Ilyanna Hernandez had 11 kills against Chattanooga and 12 versus Loyola. Junior Jessica Mollman recorded her first double-digit kill effort of the season with 10 in the Loyola match. Junior Sarah Alisaleh, tallied 92 assists in the tourney, including 44 in the loss to Loyola. Austin Peay will open up Conference play at home with Tennessee State on Friday.
Eastern Illinois (0-0 OVC; 6-6 overall): Eastern Illinois went 2-2 last week, including going 1-2 at the ISU Classic. The Panthers defeated UIC (19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22) andChicago State (25-13, 25-11, 25-20) while also falling to Indiana State (23-25, 22-25, 25-27) and Ball state (14-25, 22-25, 17-25). Alex Zwettler earned her second straight all-tournament team honor at the ISU Classic it also marks the fifth of her career. Eastern Illinois will travel to Jacksonville State on Friday and Tennessee Tech on Saturday to open up Conference play. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.
Eastern Kentucky ( 0-0 OVC; 0-9 overall): Eastern Kentucky lost three matches at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by Ohio University. The Colonels dropped a trio of three-set matches to Missouri State (23-25, 17-25, 26-28), Indiana (22-26, 21-25, 22-25) and Ohio (13-25, 17-25, 20-25). Lindsey Loescher and Lauren Synder each had a team-high 11 kills in the Missouri State match. Against Indiana, three Colonels had 10 kills including Loescher, Synder and Autumn Harms. Hannah Groudle led the team against Ohio with nine kills. Eastern Kentucky will travel to UT Martin on Friday and Murray State on Saturday to kick off Conference play. Jacksonville State (0-0 OVC; 6-5 overall): Jacksonville State defeated Auburn (25-21, 15-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9) before going 0-3 at the Arkansas Tournament. The Gamecocks fell to Arkansas (20-25, 18-25, 20-25), Kansas (15-20, 12-15, 16-25) and North Texas (23-25, 20-25, 21-25). Senior Brittney Whitten registered 40 kills and 43 digs over the four matches. Jacksonville State will host Troy on Tuesday before welcoming Eastern Illinois(Friday) and Southeast Missouri (Saturday) to open up Conference play. All three matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.
Morehead State (0-0 OVC; 7-3 overall): Morehead State went 2-2 at the Michigan Challenge, falling to Missouri (15-25, 25-23, 19-25, 8-25) and No. 7 Michigan (22-25, 16-25, 22-25) before defeating Fairfield (25-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-15) and VCU (32-30, 18-25, 25-23, 25-12). Freshman Annie Gruenschlaeger led the Eagles with 20 total blocks and now has 52 blocks in her first 10 matches. Junior Kaitlin Craven led the team with 43 kills and posted three double-doubles. Junior Holly Evans recorded a team-best .275 hitting percentage and also had 36 kills. Sophomore Liz Schuler posted her first career double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Junior Kristie Brangers dished out 124 assists last week while also posting a .355 attack percentage. Morehead State will host Marshall on Tuesday before kicking off Conference play at UT Martin (Friday) and Murray State(Saturday) this weekend. The match with UT Martin can be seen on OVCSports.TV
Murray State (0-0 OVC; 0-9 overall): Murray State dropped three matches at the Saluki Invitational. The Racers fell to Valparaiso (14-25, 16-25, 17-25), Southern Illinois (24-26, 25-22, 13-25, 25-10, 10-15) and UAB (25-27, 23-25, 16-25). Junior Sarah Hayden was named to the all-tournament team after recording a .410 hitting percentage while adding 11 blocks and two service aces. Hayden also moved on to the school's all-time total block list in the first match versus Valpo. She is currently in the 10th spot with 150 blocks. Sophomore Logan Su tallied a career-best five blocks against SIU. Sophomore Kayleah Sauer recorded 4.64 digs per set last week. She recorded a season-best 18 digs against both Valpo and Southern Illinois. Sophomore Jade Guo dished out 106 assists over the three matches. Murray State will host Morehead State on Friday and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday to kick off Conference play.
Southeast Missouri (0-0 OVC; 3-6 overall): Southeast Missouri dropped three matches at the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic, falling to Ole Miss (16-25, 18-25, 25-18, 20-25), Georgia Tech (24-26, 25-22, 13-25, 20-25) and Clemson (16-25, 23-25, 17-25). Senior Karleigh DeLong was named to the all-tourney team after she averaged 2.64 kills and 1.64 digs over the three matches. She recorded a season-high 18 kills in the loss to GeorgiaTech. Senior Molly Davis registered 81 digs, including a single-match school record 39 versus Ole Miss. She has extended her double-digit dig match streak to 29. Freshman Brittney Kalinoski averaged 2.18 kills and 1.64 digs for the week. Southeast Missouriopens Conference play on the road as the Redhawks travel to Tennessee Tech on Friday and Jacksonville State on Saturday. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.
SIU Edwardsville ( 0-11 overall): SIU Edwardsville dropped a trio of matches in theChattanooga Country Inn & Suites Invitational. The Cougars fell to Loyola (25-23, 23-25, 16-25, 25-27), Chattanooga (21-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-27) and Austin Peay (13-25, 18-25, 16-25). Senior Tiffany Turner earned all-tournament honors after recording 35 digs over the three matches. SIU Edwardsville will travel to Illinois State on Tuesday before playing in the Saint Louis Tournament.
Tennessee State (0-0 OVC; 1-9 overall): Tennessee State fell to Chattanooga (25-27, 22-25, 25-17, 13-25) before going 0-3 at the Western Kentucky Tournament. The Tigers dropped matches to Western Kentucky (22-25, 22-25, 13-25), Memphis (19-25, 18-25, 18-25), and Northern Illinois (25-27, 20-25, 20-25). Senior Vicmari Prospero was named to the all-tournament team after leading the team in kills and points. She finished the week with 39 kills and a .318 attack percentage. Freshman Calasia Williams tallied 44 digs last week, including 16 against Northern Illinois. Senior Yamari Padilla-Collazo recorded 20-plus assists in each of the matches last week, including dishing out 35 againstChattanooga. Tennessee State will travel to Austin Peay on Friday to open up Conference play.
Tennessee Tech (0-0 OVC; 1-8 overall): Tennessee Tech went 0-3 at the Louisville Invitational last week, falling to Louisville (18-25, 25-20, 14-25, 14-25), Liberty (27-29, 25-22, 18-25, 25-10, 14-16) and Toledo (18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25). Junior Leah Meffert finished with 18 or more kills in each of the three matches and notched two double-doubles. Senior Katie Kenline surpassed 2,000 career digs over the weekend and has now 2,037. She posted double-digits in each of the Golden Eagles' three matches. She finished the week with 46 digs. Junior Melanie Culp dished out 124 assists, including a career-high 49 versus Liberty. Tennessee Tech will host Southeast Missouri (Friday) andEastern Illinois (Saturday) to kick off Conference play. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.
UT Martin (0-0 OVC; 5-3 overall): UT Martin fell to Arkansas State (22-25, 18-25, 17-25) in its only match of the week. At 5-3, the Skyhawks have matched its best start since 200. UT Martin will travel to Evansville on Monday before opening Conference play at home this weekend with Eastern Kentucky (Friday) and Morehead State (Saturday).
