University of Memphis Volleyball Team Sweeps UTEP on Senior Day
Hajnalka Molnar posts eighth double-double of the year
UTEP (12-19; 4-14 C-USA) 19 19 20
Memphis (16-14; 7-11 C-USA) 25 25 25
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis setter Hajnalka Molnar posted her team-leading eight double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs, and the Tigers served up 11 aces to cruise to a sweep of UTEP on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis snapped a four-game slide with the win and improve to 16-14 overall and 7-11 in C-USA play. UTEP suffered its 12th-straight loss to fall to 12-19, 4-14 in league action.
Marija Jovanovic recorded a match-high tying 12 kills, while Maja Kostic and Altrese Hawkins added nine and eight kills, respectively. Hawkins, who hit .375, also had a career-high five aces.
Christine Bach joined Molnar with a match-high 10 digs for the Tigers, who earned their first C-USA sweep of the year.
For the second consecutive match, the Tigers got off to a slow start in the opening set and fell behind 7-1. But Memphis weather UTEP’s initial surge and put together a five-point rally on the strength of kills by Cassidy Hawkins, Jovanovic and two from Kostic to get back into the set, 11-9. A service error stopped the run, but didn’t slow the Tigers momentum as they strung together a four-point push to claim a 13-12 lead. One of seven first-set kills by Jovanovic evened the score at 12-all and an attack error by UTEP turned the lead over to the Tigers, 13-12. Behind the strong serve of Altrese Hawkins, the Tigers took control of the set by scoring seven-straight to go up 24-17. UTEP held off two set-point serves, but could not deny the Tigers a third shot at closing the set out as Molnar dumped in a kill to clinch the 25-19. Memphis hit a scorching .433 on 16 kills in the first. Jovanovic hit .545 with seven kills, WHILE Molnar set 13 assists.
In a closely contested second set, Memphis again used the serve of Altrese Hawkins to gain control of the set. A Miners ball-handling error broke a 13-13 tie and set the Tigers on a 6-0 run. Hawkins had three of her five aces in the rally that saw the U of M take a 19-13 advantage. That was all they needed en route to a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Memphis took early control of the finale, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. However, UTEP responded with an 8-1 surge to take a one-point lead, 13-12. The Miners extended their cushion to 17-13 and threatened extending the match to a fourth set. But the Tigers answered by scoring on the next seven serves to turn the four-point deficit to a one-point advantage. Memphis got aces from Jovanovic and Katlin Inglish on its way to taking the lead. Altrese Hawkins broke a 19-19 tie with a kill that ignited the Tiger’s final push to clinch the sweep. She followed with an ace and a back row kill to put Memphis up 22-19. UTEP landed a kill to trim the Tiger lead to 22-20, but consecutive aces by Molnar salted the match away.
The Tigers will wrap up the 2010 season with a pair of matches versus UAB, Nov. 24 and 27. Memphis will make the short trip to Birmingham to take on the Blazers on Wed., Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. The two teams will then end the season with a 7 p.m. showdown in Memphis on Sat., Nov. 27.
University of Houston Cougars Volleyball Team Forces Fourth Set Against Tulsa For Second Time This Season
Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Houston volleyball team was the first team in eight tries to force four sets against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Conference USA leaders on Sunday afternoon as the Cougars lost 3-1 (14-25, 23-25, 25-20, 21-25) Sunday afternoon at the Reynolds Center.
Despite the loss, Houston also snapped Tulsa’s streak of seven sweeps over C-USA opponents. Houston is now 19-12 on the season and 13-6 in league action.
“We played a much better, well-rounded match today,” head coach Molly Alvey said. “We competed extremely well, probably better than we have competed in a while. Today, the team played smart volleyball. Our side-out game, being able to convert out of serve receive, was incredibly sharp. We stepped up and aggressively hit shots when we needed to. That's how we found our success. We played to win.”
Marluci Toazzi led the Cougars with 14 kills and nine digs. Stephanie Nwachukwu added 11 kills and three blocks, while Chandace Tryon had 10 kills. Amber Brooks led the team with 45 assists and Amanda Carson tallied 21 digs.
“Chandace had a consistent weekend, physically and emotionally,” Alvey added. “She played smart volleyball with high intensity. Marluci stepped up and made smart aggressive shots today for us. We had some players come off the bench that did a really nice job. They contributed and added to the team chemistry. I am proud of our team effort.”
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-6 lead to start the first set but Tulsa answered with a 6-1 run to regain the lead at 12-8. Alvey called a timeout to end the run, but the Tulsa only added to its total out of the break by scoring the next three points off three UH attack errors.
The attack errors were three of seven committed by the Cougars, while Tulsa played an error free set on a .542 hitting percentage en route to a 25-14 win.
Just as they had in the first set, Houston took the early 16-15 lead in the second set. Trailing, Tulsa was forced to call a timeout. The two teams traded points before the Golden Hurricane was able to steal a 20-18 lead. UH played from behind for much of the remainder of the set until they were able to tie the score at 23-23. Tulsa’s Diana Silva would then set up set point with a kill and an attack error by Lucy Charuk would put Tulsa up 2-0.
Houston would once again take the early lead, 12-9, in the third set but this time the lead would stand. The Cougars, despite allowing Tulsa within one, 18-17, would go on to win the third set, 25-20, and snap a 29-set win streak by the Golden Hurricane. The last time Tulsa lost a set was a 25-23 first set defeat to UH on Oct. 22.
For the first time on the afternoon, Tulsa took a 7-3 lead to start the fourth set. The Cougars were able to pull within one, 10-9, but the Golden Hurricane would start to pull away, holding a 22-17 into a UH timeout. Houston scored the first three points out of the break but Tulsa would close out the match, scoring three of the next four points.
With the win, Tulsa has now won 28 consecutive matches.
UP NEXT Houston will look to reach the 20-win mark for the first time since 2008 when they travel to Rice on Nov. 27 for the 2010 season finale at Tudor Fieldhouse. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Alabama Volleyball Team Falls 3-1 to Georgia on Senior Day
Kayla Fitterer records a match-high 19 kills despite the loss
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama volleyball team fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at the CAVE. Sophomore Kayla Fitterer led the Crimson Tide with a match-high 19 kills, while senior Kayla Schmidt added 27 assists.
Alabama (10-19, 2-17 SEC) started strong, winning the first set against the Bulldogs, but could not sustain the momentum. The Tide fell in the second set and then lost a pair of close, hard-fought sets at the end. Fitterer added 10 digs in addition to her 19 kills, while sophomore Kelsey Anderson led the Tide with 11 digs. The match featured 28 ties and 12 lead changes as both teams battled neck-and-neck throughout.
“Our team put everything it had into the first set today,” Alabama Head Coach Judy Green said. “We spent a lot of our emotions in the five-set match against Auburn on Friday night, so it was tough to turn around and play in this one today. We could have easily rolled over after the second set, but they did not and I am proud of them for not quitting. They left everything they had on the floor.”
Alabama honored its four seniors, Mary Catherine Aune, Calli Johnson, Alyssa Meuth and Schmidt following the match. The Tide will play its final match at the CAVE at 4 p.m. on Wednesday against Mississippi State.
“These seniors have been exceptional role models for our team.” Green added. “Throughout this entire season they have stayed tough, composed and really held our team together.”
Alabama won the first set 25-22 to seize control of the match from the outset. Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the early going, but the Tide fought right back, scoring eight of the next ten points to take an 8-5 advantage. Johnson keyed the Alabama charge with three blocks.
The Tide led or held a share of the lead for the remainder of the first set on the way to a 1-0 match lead. The Bulldogs pulled within one point on 10 different occasions, tying the score twice, but were never able to overtake Alabama. Johnson and Fitterer combined for eight of the Tide’s 15 first set kills.
Georgia won the second set 25-11 to tie the match at 1-1. Alabama took a quick 5-2 lead, however the Bulldogs reeled off 13 consecutive points to take a 15-5 advantage. From there, The Tide cut the margin to nine points on two separate occasions, but could not overcome the hot hitting of the Bulldogs.
Georgia won the critical third set by a 25-22 margin, despite Alabama’s best efforts. The Bulldogs took a 16-8 lead midway through the third set before a furious 9-0 rally gave the Tide a 17-16 lead. Both teams traded the next seven points until a Meuth kill gave Alabama a 21-20 advantage. From there, however, Georgia scored five of the next six points, including the final three to take the set and a 2-1 match lead.
The set featured seven ties and five lead changes. Fitterer led the Tide with six kills, while Schmidt had five assists.
Georgia won the fourth set 25-22 to close out the match. Neither team held a lead larger than three in another tightly-contested frame. Alabama held a 17-15 lead after back-to-back kills by freshman Brianne Vande Griend, but the Bulldogs scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-20 lead. A pair of kills from Fitterer and Vande Griend tied the score right back up at 22, however the Bulldogs tallied the last three points of the set to win the match.

A trio of Bulldog attack errors pushed Auburn to a 4-1 advantage at the start of the first set, but the home team regrouped to push a five-point rally and take a 6-4 lead. A Bulldog error and a service ace by Crouch triggered an Auburn run to give the Tigers a 20-17 lead. Mississippi State, however, used a 7-2 final run to take the set 25-23.
In the second set, Mississippi State took a quick 3-0 lead and pressed on to go up five at 7-2. At 10-7 Mississippi State, a kill by Rud set off a four-point Auburn rally to give the Tigers an 11-10 advantage. A kill by Johns led to a 6-0 run to put the Tigers up 18-12 and Auburn pushed to finish with a 25-17 set win.
Kills by Rud and Camila Jersonsky along with a pair of Bulldog attack errors gave Auburn a 4-1 lead to open the third set. Mississippi State locked the score at five apiece and the two squads battled back and forth throughout the middle of the set. A trio of kills by Fidero put Auburn ahead at 16-12 and a kill by Rud set the score 20-14 in favor of the Tigers. The Bulldogs cut the score to two at 22-20, but Auburn held on to win 25-22.
The fourth set proved to be a battle as the two squads fought for points at the start of the set. A kill by Fidero gave the Tigers a 12-11 advantage and kills by Bullock and Mellor pushed Auburn ahead three at 14-11. The Bulldogs came back to come within a point at 15-14 and eventually locked the set up at 22 apiece. A kill by Fidero and another by Bullock solidified the Tiger victory as Auburn went on to take the 25-22 win.
Auburn closes out the regular season on the road as the Tigers travel to Athens, Ga., for a 6 p.m. CT match on November 24 against the Georgia Bulldogs.
University of Tulsa Volleyball Team Wins C-USA Championship with 3-1 Defeat of Houston
Golden Hurricane clinches C-USA title, wins 28th straight match
TULSA, Okla. – The 24th-ranked University of Tulsa volleyball team clinched the 2010 Conference USA Championship with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21) defeat of Houston Sunday afternoon at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tyler Henderson slammed 23 kills and hit .372, and Jessica Adams tallied 19 digs to lead the Golden Hurricane (29-2, 19-0 C-USA) to its third C-USA Championship in five years, clinching its second NCAA Tournament bid. TU won its 28th straight match. Houston fell to 19-12 overall and 13-6 in league play.
“We’re excited about winning our third championship in five years,” Tulsa Head Coach Ed Allen said. “It’s taken a couple of years to get back here. It feels great to finally get it done with a match yet to play. The thing that we’re really working hard at pursuing now is that perfect (conference) season.”
Diana Silva recorded 13 kills and eight digs and Jordan Clampitt had 46 assists and eight digs. Shelbi Pitcher and Kellie Culbertson tallied eight and seven digs, respectively, and Hannah Stout and Kelsey Hancock each added six kills. Elizabeth Kale hit .333 with three kills.
Tulsa hit .241 as a team (53-20-137) with 53 kills, 49 assists, three service aces, 57 digs and 7.0 blocks. Houston hit .176 for the match (49-24-142) with 49 kills, 48 assists, three service aces, 55 digs and 5.0 blocks.
“It’s a great way for me to go out my senior year,” said Stout, a four-year starter. “We’re excited to go back to the NCAA Tournament and we have a chance to go undefeated (in conference) against SMU on Saturday. We hadn’t dropped a set all year at home. This was our most competitive match, but we handled the pressure well and executed.”
The Golden Hurricane dominated for most of the first set, committing zero attack errors, and then won a hard battle in the second set with 14 ties and five lead changes. Houston won the third set, breaking TU’s run of 29 straight sets won, and it was the first set the Hurricane lost at home this season. Tulsa came back to win another hard-fought set, taking the fourth frame to close out the match.
“That was a very competitive Houston team,” said Allen. “They challenged us, and they did a lot to pressure us. We got another strong effort in ball control out of our serve-receive. For the most part it was a pretty terrific defensive effort. That’s a team with three kids that are difficult to match up with, and they can go over the top of you. But our ball control was solid.”
The Golden Hurricane closes the regular season against SMU Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m. TU will honor its two seniors, Hannah Stout and Shaylin Werner, in a ceremony before the match.
