UC Santa Barbara Women’s Volleyball Team: Gauchos Sign Two Top Players to NLI’s UCSB inks a setter and outside hitter.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball team signed two top prep players to National Letters of Intent to join the Gauchos for the 2011 season, head coach Kathy Gregory announced on Thursday.
Coming to the squad from San Diego’s Steele Canyon High is outside hitter Halle Aiken, a 6-foot-1 two-time team captain and all-league MVP. Aiken finished second in the state in hitting percentage as a senior and 13th in the nation. She also finished in the top four in the Grossmont Hills League in every statistical category.
A standout student, Aiken has been heavily involved as a school team leader and in the Pink Ribbon Club, helping raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. She has volunteered more than 100 hours of community service through her area YMCA.
“She is a skilled athlete, who is built to play volleyball,” Gregory said. “She can be an impact player on the left and right side. She has tremendous quickness and jumping ability and is a smart player who will contribute as a freshman.”
Joining Aiken in the incoming class is Hanna Nielson, a top-notch setter from Saratoga, Calif. A four-time all-league and all-section pick, Nielson is a 5-foot-11 left-hander who should help ease the loss of graduating All-American setter Dana Vargas.
Nielson served as a team captain for her club team, Vision, achieving a bronze medal at the 2010 Junior Olympics as well as winning a pair of gold medals in two separate tournaments. She also was a team captain for her club team in 2009, winning a silver medal in a tournament.
“She is the prototype of what a setter should be,” Gregory said. “She is extremely athletic and she plays on the highest-level club team. She is more than capable of starting as a freshman and she will surely lead us to victories.”
Wake Forest Volleyball Team Announces Recruiting Class for Fall of 2011 Demon Deacons to welcome five talented student-athletes WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest head volleyball coach Heather Kahl Holmes has announced the signing of five student-athletes for the class of 2015. Mary Hoey, Danae Rosendall, Ashlee Rusk, Jazmen Russell and Dani Thompson will all be joining the Demon Deacons in the fall of 2011. “All of these players will have an immediate impact on our program next year and for the continued success of Wake Forest Volleyball,” said Kahl Holmes. “They are replacing a significant group we lose to graduation this year, but each of them possesses tremendous athletic talent, ability and versatility which will provide us the tools to compete for an ACC Championship. They understand the commitment to excellence we have here at Wake Forest both on and off the court.” Mary Hoey is a 6-0 outside hitter from Marietta, Ga., where she played for Pope High School and A5 Volleyball in Atlanta. Hoey was a three-year captain for the Pope Greyhounds and was named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Georgia Player of the Year back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010. In addition, she was named the 2008 and 2009 Gatorade Georgia Volleyball Player of the Year. Hoey earned All-Area and All-County honors four times and All-State honors twice. She also earned Prep Volleyball High School All-American honors in 2009 and Second Team Under Armour All-America honors as announced by the AVCA in 2010. At the club level, Hoey has been named to the All-Tournament team at the USA National Championships and contributed to A5’s 2010 Big South Qualifier championship. “Mary is an incredible volleyball player with proven success,” said Kahl Holmes. “She is a two time Player of the Year in Georgia and currently holds the career kills and hitting percentage records in her state. She is a fierce competitor on and off the court. Her ability to be effective on the right side and outside will add tremendous depth to our team, providing us more options offensively. Mary has the talent and potential to become one of the most effective hitters in the conference during her career here at Wake.” Dani Thompson, a 5-7 libero/defensive specialist, also played her high school volleyball at Pope High School and helped Hoey guide the Greyhounds to the State 5A Championship in 2009 and the State 4A Championship in 2010. The duo also helped Pope High reach the State 5A Championship match in 2008 before ending the season as runners-up. Thompson has also accumulated several individual awards, including a spot on the Honorable Mention Under All-America Team in 2010. She was also named Team MVP in both 2009 and 2010 and was named the Georgia 5A Player of the Year in 2009. Also playing club for A5 out of Atlanta, Thompson earned 2009 AAU Open Division All-America and 2009 USAV National Division All-American honors. "Dani will be a difference maker in the back court for us. She is steady in serve receive, aggressive, tenacious defensively and is a vocal leader on the floor,” said Kahl Holmes. “These are qualities you look for in a great libero. Her experience and training in high school and club has molded her into a proven winner. Dani is a fierce competitor, and will make an immediate impact on our program's continued success." Danae Rosendall is a 6-2 setter from Hudsonville, Mich., where she played for Hudsonville High School and Far Out VBC. She was named Second Team All-State, and she was named to the Matawan All-Star Team after her junior year. Rosendall has also received multiple All-Conference, All-District and All-Region honors throughout her high school career. Rosendall was also honored as a Burger King Scholar Athlete and team MVP during her junior year and was named Academic All-State and a finalist for Miss Michigan Volleyball her senior year. “Danae is a fundamentally sound setter with great athleticism,” said Kahl Holmes. “Her physical presence at the net will add an immediate impact as a blocker and attacker. Her footwork allows her to move around the court putting her in position to effectively run the offense. She connects well with the middles, something we pride ourselves on in our offensive system. I am looking forward to seeing Danae challenge for a starting spot.” Rusk is a 6-1 middle blocker from Liberty, Texas, where she played for both Barbers Hill High School and the Absolute Volleyball Academy (AVA). She has been named Academic All-District twice (2008-09) and First Team All-District once (2008) and earned both Santa Fe Tournament MVP and Sonic Athlete of the Week in 2010. In 2009, Rusk was named Offensive Player of the Year for Barbers Hill, and in 2010, her club team placed ninth at the Junior Olympics in Reno. She was also named 2010-11 Honorable Mention All-Texas. “Ashlee is an amazing athlete. When we first saw her play, she was a six-rotation middle blocker. She has experience in the front court and back court as a defender and primary passer. Fortunately for us, her high school has allowed her to continue to work on her all around skills,” said Kahl Holmes. “She has some of the best blocking instincts we have seen in a long time. Her versatility as a hitter also affords us the option of having her swing at the pins. We are looking forward to watching her develop in a top middle blocker in the league.” Jazmen Russell is a 5-11 outside hitter from Hacienda Heights, Calif., where she played for both Los Altos High School and Club West 18 Elite. Russell is a three-time Scholar Athlete who was named First Team All-league, All-valley and All-CIF in her junior year. She has been named to the All MLK Speak Easy Tournament Team and was part of the 2009 CIF Championship winning team. Russell is also a two-year letter holder in track & field and is the captain of her volleyball team. She has recently been named to the AVCA Under Armour All-American Watch List and the Top 150 Senior Aces. “Jazz is a middle blocker turned outside, so once again we find ourselves with an athlete versatile enough to fill multiple needs,” said Kahl Holmes. “She has worked extensively on her ball control which will help improve her all around game. She is extremely explosive, hits a heavy ball, and has natural timing on her block, allowing her to be a force in the front row. Jazz will bring immediate depth to our team and we are looking forward to her making an impact on our program.”

The first set started out close with the score tying five times before a 4-0 run by PSU had the Nittany Lions leading by four, 9-5, and VT taking a timeout. The Hokies fought to within two, 13-11, but a VT service error and a Wilson kill kept PSU up by three, 15-12. Two straight Virginia Tech kills put the Hokies within one, 15-14, midway through the frame. Moments later, after a PSU ball handling error the score was knotted at 18-18. Freshman Katie Slay (Raleigh, N.C.) put the Lions back in the lead with a kill, but VT’s Justine Record fired back with her own to tie it up at 19-19. A Brown kill and a joint stuff by Scott and Wilson moved PSU in the lead by two, 21-19, and forced a Virginia Tech timeout. One kill each from Brown, Carpenter and Wilson and a VT error secured the first set for Penn State, 25-22. The second stanza was controlled by Virginia Tech from the start. A 3-0 run after the break put Penn State in the lead, 19-18. After a Hokie timeout, a Carpenter ace put the Lions up by two, 20-18. The squads went back and forth until PSU closed out the set with a 3-1 run for a 25-22 second set win. The Hokies had three errors to aid Penn State’s win. Despite neither team developing any momentum to take control early in the third set, Penn State dominated the second half of the frame. With the score knotted at 10-10, a 5-1 PSU run pushed the Lions into the lead by four, 15-11. Felicia Willoughby cut off the run with a kill, but Penn State took off on a 4-0 run for a 19-12 lead. Virginia Tech called a timeout and Samantha Gostling followed the break with a kill to put the Hokies within six, 19-13. However, a Balza kill put PSU up by seven, 20-13, and sent VT back to the bench. The Nittany Lions closed out the set on a 5-0 run for a 25-13 third set victory.
