Lobo Volleyball Grass Bash Raises $4,100 For Charity

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico volleyball program wrapped up its spring season by raising $4,100 at the fourth annual Grass Bash held at Johnson Fields on April 23-24, 2011.

All of the proceeds from the Grass Bash will be donated to the UNM's Children's Hospital. An additional $1,000 will be given towards the Jeanne Fairchild Endowed Scholarship.

Lobo seniors-to-be Allison Buck, Ashley Rhoades and Kelly Williamson recently presented Daniel Jaecks, Associate Director of Development for UNM Hospitals, with a $4,100 check to go towards the efforts of UNMCH.

"When the community comes together and is able to make a difference, its awesome," Jaecks said. "When student-athletes come together, it's that much more special I think. This really makes a difference."

There were 150 teams that participated in the various divisions of the volleyball tournament this year. Some of the teams even included current and former Lobos' players, such as the team of Williamson and Lisa Meeter.

"It feels amazing," Williamson said in reference to being part of the good cause. "We get so much from this community, so we feel it's important to pay it forward."

When it was all said and done, Lobos' head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson was very proud of the way his team has involved itself with the community.

"Our team has made a huge commitment to the community," Nelson said. "The Grass Bash is such a great event. The whole thing is designed to pretty much give everything right back that we bring in."

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball put together two more good efforts in its second weekend of spring competition.

The Panthers opened the week with a three-set win at Marquette Thursday, then had a solid day at the Three Wise Men Classic in Chicago on Saturday.

UWM won the contest at Marquette, 25-22, 10-25, 19-17. In Chicago, the Panthers bounced back from a slow start to capture victories against Illinois and Bradley and finish second in their pool.

Against the Golden Eagles, all 11 Panthers players got in the match, with Kerri Schuh and Elizabeth Egerer leading the way with nine kills apiece.

"We figured some things out as the day went along," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said of the workouts and match with Marquette. "We started working harder and did not give up. It was great experience for all 11 of our players and they really started to figure out how to work with each other on the court. I was proud to see how hard we fought and it was nice to get rewarded in the end."

In Chicago, the Panthers had their ups and downs but found a lot to be happy about at the end of the day.

"We had good and bad moments but the spring really is about learning and gaining experience more than it is about the wins and losses," Johnson said. "We responded well to some struggles early in the day. Our block picked up and we started playing well in transition. We got better throughout the day. Our defense was very good and we continued to battle."

Milwaukee wraps up its spring competition schedule Saturday, hosting Western Michigan at the Klotsche Center.

"It is hard to simulate game-like conditions in practice, so we are very fortunate to get these chances in the spring to play against other college teams, and very good teams at that," Johnson said. "It is important we get everyone in the matches and give everyone a chance to gain that experience and to work at getting better. This is the time of the year for learning and we are getting a lot accomplished on that front."

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team
helped out with the Milwaukee Empty Bowls project recently.

The Panthers helped design bowls that will be sold at a fundraiser as part
of the efforts to assist hunger programs in the Milwaukee area.

Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in the fight
to end hunger and food insecurity. Each group that participates in the Empty
Bowls project works with their community to create their own event.

Milwaukee Empty Bowls started in 1999 with the same concept - to raise funds
for food and hunger programs here in Milwaukee. Milwaukee Empty Bowls has a
special fundraising event set for Oct. 9, with the event benefitting the
Agape Community Center, The Cathedral Center, Friedens Community Ministries,
Inc., Milwaukee Christian Center, The Gathering and Repairers of the Breach.

At the event on Oct. 9, attendees will get to select from over 2,000
original handcrafted bowls and sample soups and breads from over 50 local
chefs. Proceeds from a donation ($20 minimum per bowl including the Grab Bag
Express, four bowl limit per person and $10 Kids' Bowls, no limit) will
benefit food pantries and meal programs in the greater Milwaukee area. The
Grab Bag Express allows you to enter "fast track" line in which you can
purchase a bowl that has been pre-selected for you. The bowls are to be
taken home as a reminder that someone's bowl is always empty.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball and gymnastics programs started their Labor Day by answering phones and taking donations Monday as part of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association of Greater Baton Rouge telethon at the Hilton Capitol Center.
 
Both teams spent two hours at the event to help raise funds for the telethon and did demonstrations of their respective sports coming out of commercial breaks.
 
“It really means a lot to me to be a part of a program that helps wonderful organizations like MDA,” outside hitter Angela Bensend said. “We love getting involved in the community, and today was exciting to see the Baton Rouge community donate to find a cure for muscular dystrophy.”
 
LSU volleyball, ranked No. 21 in the AVCA Top 25, makes its home debut this weekend at the Tiger Classic. The Tigers will welcome New Mexico State, North Carolina and Rice to the Maravich Center.
 
Tiger gymnastics begins their quest for a third “Super Six” in the last four years and starts practice on September 16.

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State football and volleyball programs will compete against each other in the first ever charity volleyball match on Friday, May 21 at 6 p.m. All of the proceeds from “Digging for Dylan” will go to help Dylan Cain, a local 5-year-old child who suffers from cerebral palsy.

 

Tickets will only be sold at the door in the Truax Indoor Center and are $10 for adults and $5 for youth and Oregon State students with OSU ID.

 

Sport court will be laid down in Truax. And there will be three total sets played with football players against volleyball players in the first set before the two teams being mixed for the last two sets. Some of the Beaver football players that will be competing are JacQuizz and James Rodgers, Timi Oshinowo, Castro Masaniai, Joshua Andrews and Lance Mitchell.

 

Dylan and his parents, Mark and Jinger, recently traveled to Duke Children’s Hospital and Clinic in North Carolina, where Dylan received an infusion of stem cells harvested from his banked umbilical cord blood that was saved from birth. For more information on Dylan’s journey, visitwww.help4dylan.com.

 

This isn’t the first fundraising effort for Dylan that the Oregon State volleyball team has participated in.

 

The volleyball players took part in a dinner event as servers last June in the $100 ticket five-course meal at Aqua Seafood Restaurant and Bar. Seventy-one were in attendance. All of the food and wine was donated, and the staff at Aqua also donated its time. The event included a short speech by Oregon State volleyball head coach Taras Liskevych and a video.

 

The Oregon State volleyball team helped with another fundraising effort for Dylan in April, 2009 by serving at a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s in Corvallis. Liskevych and the volleyball program donated a number of Oregon State volleyball items signed by the players, adding a USA Volleyball player jersey from when he was the national coach, for a raffle that the Cain’s held in April as well.

Long Island Volleyball Team Reaches Out To Community with Clinic

BROOKLYN, N.Y. –

 On April 9, the Long Island University volleyball paid a visit to a local school in an attempt to give back to the community and promote the sport throughout the city. The Blackbirds hosted a free volleyball clinic at East New York Family Academy.

 

The Long Island players and coaches gave lessons and ran a clinic for players from both the men’s and women’s teams, coached by Andrea Moore. During the 2009 season, the Blackbirds learned that several of the East New York Family Academy players had attended matches at Long Island, so the team decided to return the favor with a trip to their gym.

 

“It really was a great chance for us to get involved in Brooklyn,” Long Island head coach Kyle Robinson said. “It was a lot of fun but just as important it was a great learning experience for our girls. It was just as good for us as it was for them.”

 

Long Island won its sixth consecutive Northeast Conference championship during the 2009 season.

Denver University’s Volleyball Team to Host Community Outreach Day

Pioneers will host a clinic for kids to practice volleyball in a NCAA Division I facility with collegiate coaches and student athletes

 

DENVER –The University of Denver’s volleyball team will be hosting a volleyball clinic for girls, grades 3-8. The clinic will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium on Monday, May 3.

 

The clinic will be organized in a station type format with campers divided into specific age groups. There will be team autographs and giveaways.

 

“Each year we look forward to hosting our Community Outreach Clinic as a way to increase the interest of our sport by providing an opportunity for young players to come in to Hamilton Gymnasium and play,” said head coach Beth Kuwata. “It’s also a great opportunity to invite members of the community to support and interact with our staff and players.”

 

Admission is free but is limited to the first 80 registrants. In order to participate, campers must have medical/liability waivers signed by their parents/legal guardians.

LSU Volleyball Players Visit Local Hospital

 

BATON ROUGE – Nine members of the SEC-champion LSU volleyball team took time to visit young patients at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital over the weekend. The players went from room-to-room and spent time with the children and their families. They also handed out team posters and signed autographs.

 

“It was really great to take some time out and try our best to put some smiles on these great kids,” sophomore Lauren Waclawczyk said. “Each of us enjoyed talking and getting to know these kids. It leaves a good feeling in all of our hearts to make a difference.”

 

LSU put together an impressive 25-7 record in 2009 en route to the program's first SEC regular season title since 1991. Under head coach Fran Flory, the defending five-time SEC Western Division champions are one of only 20 programs in the nation to appear in the last five NCAA Tournaments.

Wake Forest Volleyball Team Visits Brenner Children’s Hospital

Deacons continue a spring filled with community service

 

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – On Friday, March 26, members of the Wake Forest volleyball team visited the Brenner Children’s Hospital and lifted the spirits of a number of young kids.

 

A group of players walked the halls of the teenage ward, visiting room-to-room and handing out signed posters and beach balls. Another group hung out with a group of kids in a playroom, playing basketball, Nintendo Wii and doing arts and crafts. In all, the group spent almost four hours with the kids.

 

Below are some of the player’s reactions:

 

Rising-senior Lauren McIntyre

 

On the overall experience...

“It was really fun. It was neat to work with the kids and talk to them and let them take their minds off whatever they were going through for a little bit. It was just fun to joke around with them.”

 

On her favorite part of the visit...

“Just joking around with kids and getting to know them. When we’re here on campus, we’re kind of in our own little bubble and we don’t get to meet or interact with people that are that much younger than us. It was a lot of fun just to hang out with them.

On the experience...

“I thought it was an awesome experience. It was something we had been wanting to do for awhile. I like playing with little kids and helping them out. It seems really minor to us but it was something major to them.”

 

“One of the boys, Cody, just lit up when we got in his room. His mom told us he was excited all day after she told him we we’re coming. He had been down and not feeling well but when we were there, he had a smile on his face and wanted to get out of bed. That was so much fun to see.”

 

On being with the kids in the playroom...

“There was a little three year old in the playroom that was just full of energy. He would be drawing one minute and then jump right over and wanted to play with the ball the next. Then there were a couple of kids that had their IVs hooked-up and they were still playing basketball and dunking the ball. You couldn’t even tell anything was affecting these kids. It was just so much fun to hang out and play with them.

On the experience of going to the Children’s Hospital...

“It was really great. I had never really been in a situation like that before, hanging out with little kids in the hospital. We got to hang out and got to be ourselves with them. After a while, we all felt pretty comfortable just hanging out with them. The kids were so adorable. They had their siblings there running around with them and they were all pretty energetic. The best part was just being able to play games with them and see how happy it made them.”

 

The volleyball program would like to make their visits to the hospital a more regular occurrence.

 

“Everyone had such a great time that I think we’re going to try to go back at least once a month,” said Wake Forest head coach Heather Kahl Holmes. “It looked like the kids really enjoyed us being there and I know it made an impact on the players’ lives as well.”

 

Visits to Brenner Children’s Hospital are just one of the many ways the Deacon volleyball program is giving back to the community. Earlier this winter, members of the team participated in Campus Kitchen where they delivered prepared meals to needy families. Two of the places the team visited was Grey’s Cottage and My Aunt’s House.

 

On April 8, the volleyball program will join other groups from around campus to participate in Project D.E.S.K. Now in its seventh year, the Discovering Education through Student Knowledge (D.E.S.K.) is an event which helps elementary students design and decorate their own personal desks.

Georgia State Volleyball Team Players Help Victims in Haiti

ATLANTA - The Georgia State college volleyball team spent Thursday afternoon helping to raise money and awareness to go to the victims of the
earthquake in Haiti earlier this week. In just over 90 minutes, the team
raised $963 on the campus library plaza.

Support from around the world is heading into the nation with every
little bit being needed as quickly as possible.

“I was overwhelmed by the amount of giving there was on campus
today,” commented assistant coach Ada Bazin. “I wasn't sure what to
expect when we started collecting donations. Students were stopping and digging in their wallets and pockets for anything they could give. One gentleman slipped a $100 bill in the bucket without wanting any praise.
That was truly amazing. I think this tragedy has pulled at a lot of
heart strings and we all hear the call for help in Haiti.”

The donations will be given to the Metro Atlanta Red Cross chapter for
Haiti Relief. The team also encouraged students and faculty to text
‘Haiti’ to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Rescue workers have struggled to clear rubble from the streets of
Haiti's "flattened" capital of Port-au-Prince, where one government
official said the death toll from Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake may
exceed 100,000.

The earthquake struck shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, centered about 10
miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
It could be felt strongly in eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away.

About 3 million people -- one-third of Haiti's population -- were
affected by the quake, the Red Cross said. About 10 million people most
likely felt shaking from the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey
said.

This continued a trend of working in the community by the college volleyball team. During the season, the squad raised over $2000 for breast cancer awareness. When all of the funds were finally collected, the team raised $2009.35, surpassing the total of $1,845 from 2008. The money was given to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affliate.

medical supplies, non-perishable food items or water, there is a Haitian
Church in Atlanta collecting. The fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, has teamed
up with the Haitian Ministry Theophile Church (http://www.hmtcc.org/) to
provide collection boxes on campus in the University Center starting
tomorrow and all next week. You can find their room in the University
Center (#1914) and a collection box will be there.

Charlotte Volleyball Names October 2 Match Dig Pink Night

 

CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte volleyball program this season will join forces with “Dig Pink” to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. The 2009 season will mark the seventh straight year that Charlotte participates in this type of fundraiser. Charlotte will host its 2009 “Dig Pink” match on Friday, October 2 versus Fordham at 7 p.m.

 

Charlotte was where “Dig for the Cure” was founded, by then-head coach Lisa Marston, for the 2002 season. She maintained the “Dig for the Cure” philanthropy and joined forces with “Dig Pink” for this season, which joins with the Side-Out Foundation for raising awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research.

 

The Side-Out Foundation is a 501 c3 Non-Profit charity operating under the brand of Dig Pink™ that promotes volleyball events throughout the year to raise money for Breast Cancer translational research and community support services.

 

In 2008, 227 programs across the country, including Charlotte, raised over $260,000 for “Dig for the Cure,” while 330 teams raised nearly $400,000 last year for “Dig Pink.” This season, “Dig Pink” has goals of 1,000 college school programs across the country joining forces with over 2,000 high school programs to raise over $1M.

 

“Dig for the Cure” helped raise almost $600,000 over the last six seasons. “Dig Pink” is not only a single-match fundraiser, but also has planned volleyball festivals in Orlando, Virginia and Maui.

 

Breast Cancer affects one out of every eight women. The main goal of the Side-Out Foundation is to “To make a significant and identifiable contribution to the fight against Breast Cancer.”

 

Rick Dunetz, founder of The Side-Out Foundation said “this is a great opportunity to bring Lisa’s experience as a coach and fund raiser to help us grow a national coalition of volleyball coaches and players who are committed to beat the disease.

 

“My mother is a breast cancer survivor,” Marston said.

 

“We started ‘Dig for the Cure’ to honor breast cancer survivors around the world. Most every person has been affected in some way by breast cancer, and so many people responded that we decided to expand it and get the rest of the conference and then the country involved. The Side-Out Foundation is a perfect fit for me because I believe it gives me the unique perspective of being a volleyball charitable foundation. I am looking forward to using the experience I gained in running Dig for the Cure and to learning from the wonderful people at Side-Out in order to help make the Side-Out Foundation a leader in specific areas of fighting breast cancer.”

 

This season, the 49ers have returned to their grassroots level, looking inward for support in the community and on campus. Current Charlotte head coach Redding has formed an internal committee of people for brainstorming and support, which has resulted in some interesting concepts implemented for this campaign.

 

“We’re ramping up our efforts to get into the community and have an impact on this cause this year,” said Redding. “I think this will be a pretty spectacular event with all of the things we’re doing this year.”

 

“Penny Wars” are scheduled to take place, where groups compete by collecting spare change over a period of time to contribute to the cause. Several sororities will compete in a penny war for tickets to see Blink 182 in Charlotte on October 6.

 

The team wore their Dig Pink gameday jerseys and raised nearly $1,500 by soliciting donations at tailgates from fans of the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles as they readied for the NFL season-opener on September 13 downtown.

 

The team plans on setting up at the entrance to the new student union the week leading up to the Dig Pink match and will be aided by Charlotte’s KISS 95.1 FM during that week to help spread the word.

BATON ROUGE – LSU is partnering with the 11 other SEC institutions for the third annual Together We CAN Food Drive from September 18-27. The Tigers will collect food and financial donations at different athletic events to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

 

The SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised more than 150,000 pounds of food as well as donations that benefited local food banks and shelters during the 2008 event.

 

LSU softball will be at the Maravich Center to collect items prior to the Friday and Sunday volleyball matches. There will be five barrels inside the arena between the Lower Southeast and Southwest entrances.

 

Another prime opportunity to donate is all day Saturday leading into the football game against Louisiana-Lafayette at the L-Club Tailgate located on the lower level of the Maravich Center.

 

Fans also can bring items to next weekend’s soccer matches against Georgia and Tennessee.  

 

For those fans wanting to donate but not able to make it to one of the above athletic events, barrels will be at the front entrance of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes in addition to the Athletic Training Room during the entire 10 day period.

College Volleyball Team Weekly News: Georgia State Volleyball to Host “Dig for the Cure”

Georgia State Volleyball to Host “Dig for the Cure”

ATLANTA - The Georgia State Volleyball team will partner with the Susan
G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta Affiliate for the second straight
year to raise awareness and funds to help fight the cause of breast
cancer.

The Panthers 2009 “Dig for the Cure” will take place on Saturday,
September 26th against UNC-Wilmington at 2:00 p.m. It also serves as
Georgia State’s CAA opener. Admission to the match is free of charge.

“I am excited about being involved in raising money for Breast Cancer
Research,” commented head coach Mike Webster. “It is a cause that
has touched all of us in some way and this is a great way for our team
to make a difference in the community and for our families.”

Fans, businesses and coworkers may pledge amounts for every dig the
Panthers record against the Seahawks or they may make a one-time
donation to the cause. Last year alone, the Panthers raised $1845 for
Komen Atlanta.

Pledges and donations for “Dig for a Cure” can be made at anytime
leading up to the event by contacting assistant coach Ada Bazin at
404-413-4068 or abazin@gsu.edu.

“My competitive nature wants this event to be bigger and better than
last year,” commented Bazin. “We want to pass the $1,800 mark this
time around and contribute more to such an important cause. With Audrey
Cantrell digging balls for us so well, I feel really good about reaching
our goal.”

The team is also encouraging all fans to come out that day and wear
pink to the Sports Arena in support of the team and the cause, while
cheering the Panthers on to victory. The team will throw out white and
pink balls to the crowd while donning pink warm-up t-shirts of their
own.

This continues a proud tradition that the Georgia State volleyball team
has with the community. The team annually hosts the Boys and Girls Club
of Atlanta, as well as the Girls Scouts of Metro Atlanta.
Through the “Dig for the Cure” program, volleyball teams and
coaches from around the country have helped raised over $340,000 over
the last five years for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. All money raised by
the Panthers and every other participating team goes directly to the
local Komen Affiliate in their community.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to
honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast
cancer at the age of 36. Today, Komen is an international organization
with a network of hundreds of thousands of volunteers working through
local affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to save
lives and end breast cancer forever. Together with its Affiliate
Network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Susan G. Komen for
the Cure raises more than $275 million annually for the fight against
breast cancer.
The Panthers next match will come Friday at the Elon Invitational,
taking on Navy at 4:30 p.m.

LSU Gymnastics, Volleyball Donate Time at MDA Telethon

BATON ROUGE – The LSU gymnastics and volleyball teams volunteered at the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association of Greater Baton Rouge telethon Monday by answering phones to take donations at the Hilton Capitol Center.

Both teams answered phones from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to help raise funds for the telethon.

“This is something that the local MDA group asks us to do every year”, gymnastics coach D-D Breaux said. “The kids and I are always excited to help them. It’s the first team-building experience we have each season, and it’s great that the team can come together to donate time and effort to the cause.”

“It feels great to be here answering phones and helping out,” gymnast Susan Jackson said. “We’re really excited to be here and give back to the community, especially for this cause because it is such a terrible disease, so all the money we can help raise for research is something we’re very glad to be a part of.”

LSU volleyball (4-2) swept Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulane after going the distance against 2008 Final Four participant and No. 6 Nebraska at the Tiger Classic last weekend. The team was extremely happy to take time out before its afternoon practice to volunteer at the telethon.

“This was a great chance for our team to make a difference and give back to the community,” middle blocker Tania Schatow said. “We’re thrilled about how much money was contributed in the time that we were there.”

Tiger volleyball returns to action against Tulane, Long Beach State and New Orleans at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic hosted by Tulane this weekend. The gymnastics team continues individual workouts Tuesday.
