Tom Hanna To Coach GEVA Youth High Performance Team At USA Volleyball High Performance Championships July 22-26

Marist To Host Team Selection Camp July 10-12

 

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist volleyball head coach Tom Hanna was named the head coach of the Garden Empire Volleyball Association’s (GEVA) Youth High Performance Team for the 2009 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships on Tuesday. The team will be comprised of players from New Jersey and parts of New York and Connecticut. Marist will host the GEVA team selection camp from July 10-12.

 

“I’m excited to be named the head coach of the GEVA Youth High Performance Team for 2009,” said Hanna. “The opportunity for Marist to host the selection camp this weekend is also exciting. I look forward to working with the young ladies in our region and representing GEVA well at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale later this month.”

 

Eighty players across three age groups will participate in this weekend’s selection camp. A final roster for the youth and select teams will come out of this camp and the teams will train the following weekend before leaving for Ft. Lauderdale on July 21. The youth team, composed of players ages 16 and 17, will compete in the Girls’ National Youth Division against 13 other teams from USA Volleyball regions across the country from July 22-26.

 

“Hosting camp and my coaching with the High Performance program should be a win-win situation for both GEVA and Marist,” said Hanna. “Marist College will continue to be part of the promotion and success of the sport in our region.”

“This is kind of a rebuilding year, and it’s a good start for us, I think,” said Oden, who lost eight players to graduation, four of them starters.

“She is doing really well for us,” Oden said. “She’s stepped up when we’ve needed her as a leader and middle blocker.”

“It’s a tough thing to move up (to varsity) – and to learn the position, like Alex is,” said Oden, in her sixth year as coach. “But I’m pleased with their progress.”



One thing Oden isn’t worried about is team chemistry.



“That’s why there’s a lot of hope for this group,” she said. “They like each other and work hard for each other.”

El Sereno volleyball coach fired after sex abuse suit is disclosed

From the LA Times

Renato 'Ray' Lopez Jr., 44, was dismissed by officials at Wilson High in El Sereno, who learned that he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a student at his previous school.

A girls' volleyball coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno was fired after officials learned about a lawsuit alleging he had a sexual relationship with a student at a Catholic school, where he resigned under pressure.

The LA Times reports "Wilson Principal Roberto Antonio Martinez said he terminated Renato "Ray" Lopez Jr., 44, from his coaching position for the Wilson Mules volleyball team after learning of the allegations involving a female student at the coach's prior school, Sacred Heart of Jesus High School in Los Angeles."

Martinez said he was unaware of the allegations until he was contacted by The Times and that he did not know if anyone checked the coach's references with his previous employers. Martinez said Wilson High's athletic director knew Lopez and that the school district had done a criminal background check.(LA Times)

Coaching High School Volleyball: How To Play This Season With P.R.I.D.E.

In this article from the Sun Sentinel Head Coach Deanna Newman shares what her coaching volleyball philosophy is about this year with her Junior Varsity team.

"When we win, I'd like my players to win with respect," Newman said. "Over the past few years, the popularity of the sport has grown widely and I think when kids see others having fun with something, they want to do it too. I find that with volleyball, once they try it, they end up loving it and commit to it."

"At the JV level, I'm just trying to teach them how to focus on the basic techniques of the game," Newman said. "At this stage, they learn how to love the sport and be comfortable on the court, as well as master the mental aspect of playing."

"I have a lot of girls from a lot of very different backgrounds and if they don't understand and respect one another off the court, then they won't be able to do so on the court," Newman said. "Our volleyball program is a big family and we have a special group of girls on JV. I'm so blessed to have all of my kids and be at this school."

Volleyball coach accused of rape

As reported in Washington's The NewsTribune.com

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a longtime girls volleyball coach with raping and molesting one of his players. Lenny Llanos, 35, has pleaded not guilty to one count each of third-degree child rape, third-degree child molestation and communication with a minor for immoral purposes.
Puyallup police arrested Llanos on Dec. 31 after a 15-year-old girl told a law enforcement interviewer she’d performed a sex act on Llanos in October as he drove her home, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.

Puyallup Volleyball Coach Accused of Raping Player

PUYALLUP, Wash. – A girls volleyball coach has been charged in Pierce County with raping and molesting one of his players. Lenny Llanos, 35, pleaded not guilty to third-degree child rape, third-degree child molestation and communication with a minor for immoral purposes, according to The News Tribune. Probable cause documents indicate a 15-year-old girl told police that she performed a sex act on Llanos when he drove her home last October. Llanos is now out of jail on $10,000 bail.
