Duke Volleyball Receives AVCA Academic Award for Fifth Straight Year
July 21, 2011
DURHAM, N.C. – For the fifth straight year, the Duke volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for maintaining a team grade point average of at least 3.30 for the entire 2010-11 academic year.
The Blue Devils have earned the academic recognition every year since 2006-07 and seven times over the past eight seasons. This award caps a remarkable 2010 campaign in which the Blue Devils won the ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Round of Eight and the Regional Final.
Duke’s academic success last season was a team effort, as every member of the team will appear on the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the second straight year. That list honors all ACC student-athletes who maintain a GPA of at least 3.00 for the entire academic year. All 15 members of the 2009-10 team appeared on that list last season, and all 12 Blue Devils will make the 2010-11 team when that list comes out in August.
Duke’s 2010 roster featured the ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year Sophia Dunworth and five other All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team selections, including Christiana Gray who appeared on the Academic All-District III Team alongside Dunworth. Additionally, senior Claire Smalzer wrapped up her career as a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
First instituted in 1992, the AVCA Team Academic Award goes to collegiate and high school volleyball programs that maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.30 for the academic year. Duke also received the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 academic years.
Duke was one of 92 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball programs to receive the honor this season and one of an AVCA-record 478 teams overall. The 478 awards were the most in the 18-year history of the AVCA Team Academic Award.
U. Miami Volleyball News: Miami Volleyball Honored with AVCA Academic Team Award
Miami Volleyball Honored with AVCA Academic Team Award
Hurricanes honored in consecutive years for academic excellence.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the second consecutive year, the University of Miami volleyball team was chosen to receive the 2010-11 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Academic Team Award, as announced by the AVCA office on Wednesday.
UMiami was one of just 18 institutions to reach the 2010 NCAA Tournament and be honored in receiving this year’s AVCA Academic Team Award. Additionally, Miami joins Duke and NC State as the only three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools on this year’s list.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
In reaching the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years (2009, 2010), the Canes once again had a solid showing in the classroom as well as on the court. Redshirt junior Katie Gallagher and freshman Alexandria Johnson were each named to the 2010 ACC All-Academic Volleyball Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
For the Hurricanes, seven student-athletes carried at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average for the 2010-11 campaign, including freshman Mariel Schofield with a 4.0. Sophomore Nrithya Sundararaman ended the year with a 3.8 GPA and classmate Lizzie Hale achieved a mark of 3.9.
“A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the 2011 AVCA Team Academic Award,” said AVCA Executive Director, Kathy DeBoer. “Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court. The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as court success. All involved should celebrate this award!”
The Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA’s fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 170 percent increase over the span of the decade. Since the award’s inception in 1993, the award has risen by an astounding 674 percent. NCAA Division II recorded their highest-ever total number of recipients, honoring 57 programs while Division III easily surpassed last year’s record of 75 winners with 88 this year. The high school division also set a new record with its 192 recipients.
Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 19-year history, with exactly 4,294 awards been given out in total.
The AVCA announced that 478 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-2011 season. This number once again breaks the previous years’ total of 450 and sets a new all-time high for this award.

Lady Vol Volleyball Player Nikki Fowler Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Although her collegiate volleyball career has come to an end, former University of Tennessee standout Nikki Fowler’s academic career continues to take off as she has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The awards valued at $7,500 have been granted by the NCAA to 29 male and 29 female student-athletes who participated in football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, equestrian, field hockey, volleyball and water polo.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The chosen student-athletes demonstrated dedication and effort, while performing both on and off the field at a high level, bringing credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.
“I could not be more proud of Nikki for what she has accomplished over the last four years here at Tennessee, both on the volleyball court and in the classroom,” UT Head Coach Rob Patrick said. “We constantly stress the importance of academics with our team and Nikki has taken that to heart. Her work ethic and the example that she provides has set the bar extremely high for others to strive for within our program.
“She has been the consummate student-athlete and I am extremely excited that she has been awarded this scholarship. I am confident that she will be highly successful in whatever career she chooses to pursue.”
Set to graduate in May with a degree in marketing and a minor in international business, Fowler currently sports a 3.8 GPA and became just the second Lady Vol volleyball player in school history to be named a Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American this fall. The Dallas, Texas, native was also tabbed the 2010 SEC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Fowler is the fourth Lady Vol to be awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in the last two years, as softball’s Lillian Hammond and Tiffany Huff and track and field’s Phoebe Wright did so in 2010. No other Southeastern Conference school has had more than two women’s athletes earn the same scholarship during that time frame.
A three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and All-SEC First Team selection on the court, Fowler is the most decorated volleyball player in Lady Vol history. Her name can be found all over the Tennessee record book as she finished her time as a Lady Vol ranked in the top 10 in seven career categories. A native of Dallas, Texas, she stands first all-time in total attacks (4,426), third in attacks per set (9.54), fourth in kills (1,649), sixth in kills per set (3.55), sixth in digs (1,281), seventh in digs per set (2.76) and eighth in blocks (344).
Over the course of her four-year career at Rocky Top, Fowler notched a double-double in 41.9 percent of her collegiate contests, accomplishing the feat 52 times in 124 career matches. In 2010, she led the Lady Vols with 393 kills (3.51/set) and 938 attacks (8.38/set), ranked second with 324 digs (2.89/set), third with a career-best .306 hitting percentage and fifth with 61 blocks (0.54/set).
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. An equitable approach is employed in reviewing each applicant's nomination form to provide opportunity to all student-athlete nominees to receive the postgraduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.

For the third straight year, America East will select the All-Academic teams using CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program as a model. Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions. All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the maximum number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time (e.g., seven on the court in volleyball) but can be more if there is a tie in voting. To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team’s games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
