After being named the 1989 USVBA Open Female Rookie of the Year, Tara Cross-Battle was well on her way to being selected to this All-USVBA's women's team.

TARA CROSS-BATTLE, Four-Time Olympic Volleyball Player 

Tara Cross-Battle put 49er volleyball on the map in the late 1980's. 

She broke nearly every Long Beach State record in her career in leading the 49ers to its first title in 1989.

Tara Cross-Battle concluded her career with a 49er record and the third-most kills in NCAA history (2767),and the most digs in 49er history (1578). 

During her senior season she set the top three single-season kill marks, highlighted by a remarkable 779.

Her career hitting percentage of .344 was the seventh-best in LBSU history. 

Tara Cross-Battle set an NCAA Tournament record with 126 kills during the 1989 NCAA title run.

“I think I am very blessed to have the career that I had,” admits Tara Cross-Battle. “I think one of the main things was staying in top shape, especially in the latter part of my career. When I was young and dumb I really didn't have to worry about that; I was still pretty resilient. I would take off a few months and still be able to come back and play. But in my latter years I knew that in order to keep playing I was going to have to remain in great shape. With the help of my husband I was able to do that.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - USA Volleyball and USA Women's National Team head coach Toshi Yoshida announced today that three-time Olympian Tara Cross Battle has been named coach/player of the USA Women's National Volleyball Team. Battle, who plays the position of outside hitter for Team USA, was a member of the 1992, 1996 and 2000 United States Olympic Teams. She will assume her new role with the team this May.

As the team enters the 2007 season, head coach Penny Lucas-White celebrates over a decade at the helm of the Air Force volleyball program. Lucas-White joined the Academy staff in 1996, just as the Academy made the jump from Division II to Division I status.


She remains the only coach in the Falcons' Division I history and by entering her 12th season on the sidelines, Lucas-White becomes the longest tenured volleyball coach in Academy history. "I am so very excited to be with this program," Lucas-White said. "We're making great strides and I'm excited to see how far we can go. We're growing and building. It's going to be fun to watch."



Penny Lucas-White joined the Academy staff in 1996 from the University of Memphis, where she compiled a 95-80 record in five seasons as head coach of the Tigers. She guided the team to a 27-8 record in 1994 and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.


That team recorded a perfect record in conference play and picked up its second Great Midwest Conference title. One year earlier, the Tigers nabbed the conference title with an 11-1 record. Lucas-White earned conference Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and 1994 for her spectacular seasons. The Falcons' mentor draws her coaching expertise from an impressive playing career at the collegiate, national and international levels.

While competing professionally in the United States and Europe, Lucas-White remained active during the collegiate season as an assistant coach with the Auburn University women's program from 1987-89. The Auburn team boasted a 63-47 record in her tenure, achieving back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1988 and 1989.

When her tour with the Italian League ended in 1991, Lucas-White accepted a position as the head coach at the University of Memphis. While there, she combined skill on the court with skill in the classroom, as her Tiger players maintained an average grade-point-average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

USAV CAP III Course Part of USOC Hosting Training Design Symposium


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 6, 2007) – Several volleyball coaches received a unique opportunity to participate in a Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) Level III session in conjunction with the USOC Performance Services’ Training Design Symposium for Elite/Emerging Elite Coaches on April 4-6 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The event was hosted by the U.S. Olympic Committee's Performance Services Division.

Jan. 18, 2006 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force volleyball staff will have a new look in 2006, as head coach Penny Lucas-White announced the hiring of former USA National Volleyball Team member, Kyle Robinson, to the Falcons' coaching staff.


While helping Lucas-White and assistant coach Verna Julaton with the day-to-day operations of the team, Robinson will work primarily with the outside hitters and liberos. In addition, he will play a strong part in the recruiting phase for the Falcons' program. Robinson replaces Lt. Col. Scott Nelson, who has been reassigned within the Academy.

Delavane Diaz Honored By The Sportswomen of Colorado


Denver, Colo. - Air Force senior Delavane Diaz was honored with the Swede Johnson Spirit Award at the Sportswomen of Colorado banquet on Sunday, March 14, 2004 in Denver.


"Del has been recognized again for her contribution that she makes to society," head volleyball coach Penny Lucas-White commented. "She goes above and beyond what is expected of her on the court and in the classroom. This is a wonderful award given to a well deserved young woman."

After an outstanding three-year career at LSU, Lucas-White opted to leave the collegiate ranks to play on a higher level overseas in the German Professional League. Two years later, the United States National team came knocking at her door and the middle hitter was chosen to play with America's best in the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean) tournament and at the 1985 Pan-American Games.



Overseas play called once again and Lucas-White departed the United States to join the ranks of the Italian Professional League in Matera. During the 1988-89 season, she competed with the team in Argrigento and was named to all-tournament teams twice in three years. Also during the 1988-89 season in Argrigento, Lucas-White served as a player and coach.


While competing professionally in the United States and Europe, Lucas-White remained active during the collegiate season as an assistant coach with the Auburn University women's program from 1987-89. The Auburn team boasted a 63-47 record in her tenure, achieving back-to-back 20-win seasons in 1988 and 1989.
