West Division Offensive Player of the Week
Kelsey Brandl, Ball State, So., MB, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S. (Cincinnati)
Sophomore Kelsey Brandl was nearly unstoppable for the Cardinals last week, collecting 34 total kills in BSU's matches versus Bowling Green and Miami. In Friday's contest versus the Falcons, Brandl smashed a career- and match-high 20 kills while hitting for a .516 (20-4-31) rate of success. She also tallied four blocks, three digs and an ace in the contest. Against the RedHawks, Brandl once again paced all players with 14 kills, while hitting for a .370 (14-4-27) rate of success. Brandl also served up a career-high four aces versus Miami, while adding four blocks and two digs. For the week, Brandl hit .448 (34-8-58), while averaging 3.78 kills, 0.89 blocks and 0.56 aces per set. Brandl entered the week hitting .349, while averaging 2.20 kills and 0.16 aces per set. She is currently hitting .368, while averaging 2.42 kills and .22 aces per set.
East Division Offensive Player of the Week
Shari Luther, Bowling Green, Sr., MB, Colgate, Wisc./Germantown
Shari Luther hit .458 on the weekend, helping Bowling Green to a split of two MAC contests. She averaged 3.22 kills per set and had just two attack errors in 59 attempts. As well, Luther had nine blocks and seven digs on the weekend. Friday night, Luther helped Bowling Green overcome a two-set deficit against Ball State, posting 16 kills and six blocks as the Falcons won the final three sets to get the win. Against rival Toledo Saturday, she had 13 kills, three blocks, and two aces.
West Division Defensive Player of the Week
Caitlin Strimel, Western Michigan, Sr., Libero, Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley
Caitlin Strimel compiled 51 total digs for 7.29 digs per set to lead Western Michigan to victories over Kent State and Ohio. Strimel started the week with a season-high 32 digs against the Golden Flashes to lead a defensive effort that produced 105 digs, third-most in a four-set match in school history and only the seventh 100-dig match in school history. Strimel came back against the MAC's top attacking team and produced 19 digs against Ohio. The Broncos held their two opponents to a combined .134 hitting with KSU hitting .098 and OU hitting .190, 103 points lower than its average in MAC matches. Strimel was perfect on serve receive with no errors in 25 attempts against two of the top serving teams in the conference.
East Division Defensive Player of the Week
Kristen Barr, Kent State, Jr., DS/Libero, Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green
Junior libero Kristen Barr recorded a career-high 41 digs Friday at MAC-West leading Western Michigan. It was also the most by any conference player in a single match and was the second-highest total by a KSU player in a match. The 55 total digs gives Barr 346 total digs and 3.72 digs per set, which moves her from 10th into the top-5 of the conference in that category.
News and Notes...
• Finding themselves down 0-2 against Eastern Michigan Friday night, the Zips rebounded surging to a 3-2 victory on the Eagle home court. Fighting in sets one and two but falling 24-26 and 26-28, Akron went on to win the next three 25-18, 25-17 and 15-8 for its sixth five-set victory. In the win senior Megan Rodriguez surpassed the 1,000th dig mark tying for a team-high 24 digs. Also in the victory, senior setter Kara Smith set a season-high 60 assists while adding ten digs for her second double-double of the season.

• Bowling Green split its weekend MAC contests for the second consecutive week after starting conference play with six straight losses ... The Falcons battled back after dropping the first two sets against Ball State to win the final three and the match ... In that win, Corey Domek had 19 kills and Shari Luther, who entered the contest as the MAC's leader in attack percentage, had 16 kills and a .484 hitting percentage ... Luther added six blocks and Domek had a career-high 15 digs ... The win was Head Coach Denise Van De Walle's 496th career victory ... Saturday, Alex Zlabis posted 24 digs and Allison Kearney had 44 assists and 15 digs in a four-set loss to Toledo ... Luther added 13 kills and a .429 attack percentage.
• The Bulls picked up their 14th win of the season and 5th conference win on Saturday night. Both of those tie school records since UB joined the MAC in 1998. The Bulls have not haf five wins in conference since 2003. With 394 digs on the season, freshman Tori Beckman is just 13 digs shy of moving into the top 10 in school history for digs in a season.
• The Chippewas got off to a great start in the second half of MAC action, sweeping East Division foes Buffalo and Akron. CMU hit an impressive .374 against the Bulls, who were ranked No. 2 in the MAC in defense at the time. Central got off to impressive starts in the first set of both matches, including jumping out to a 22-0 lead against Akron. CMU continues its four-match homestand this weekend when it hosts Eastern Michigan and Kent State. The Chippewas are 3-2 against both the East and West Divisions.
• The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team will have a rare split weekend in store, as they travel Thursday, Oct. 29, to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to face instate rival Central Michigan University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rose Arena. Then Saturday, Oct. 31, the Eagles will be home to host Ohio University, the defending Mid-American Conference Tournament Champions, for a 3 p.m. contest on Halloween.
• Junior Kristen Barr tallied 41 digs in Kent State's match against Western Michigan on Saturday, the most digs recorded by a Mid-American Conference player this season and the second-most ever by a KSU player in a match. Over the first 19 matches of the season, senior Jenny Keck had 32 assists and a .200 hitting percentage. In the last five matches, she has 31 assists and a .388 hitting percentage. Keck also went over 1500 assists for her career this past weekend.
• The RedHawks rebounded from a tough 0-3 defeat to Toledo Friday night to defeat Ball State 3-1 on Saturday. Playing on the road has been an issue for the RedHawks as they are now 3-3 in MAC play, having split each of their two games trips. Miami has been able to establish itself as the third place team in conference however with a perfect 4-0 mark at home in Millett Hall in 2009. The RedHawks will try to get through two more road games this weekend when they travel to Akron and Buffalo. After that, MAC play concludes with four consecutive home matches.
• The Huskies went 1-1 over the weekend at home as they fell to Ohio in three sets on Friday, but recovered to sweep Kent State on Saturday to improve to 8-4 at home ... Meagan Schoenrock led the way as she registered 30 kills (5.00/set), two aces, six blocks (1.00/set) and hit .414 in NIU's six sets ... The Huskies have now won six of their last seven matches.
• Senior outside hitter Ellen Herman is 200 kills off the MAC record as she now has 1,775 kills over the course of her storied career. Senior middle blocker Meghan Simons also had a fine week with 17 kills (2.83 per set), while hitting .433. She also led the team with six blocks and notched 20.5 points (3.42 per set). Setter Michelle Jantsch averaged 12.33 assists per set (74) to go with three kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Ohio blasted eight aces this week, compared to just two by their opponents.
• Toledo matched its win total from the 2008 campaign and also evened its conference record at 5-5 with a pair of home wins over Miami and Bowling Green last weekend. The Rockets held a .273-.190 advantage in the attacking department and also outblocked their opponents by a 2.43-2.14 margin. In the Rockets' win over Miami, UT posted a season-high .298 attack percentage and never trailed in the match. Freshman OH Sondra Parys led Toledo with 4.86 kps last weekend and now has posted double-digit kill totals in six straight matches to match her season high from earlier this season. Senior MB Liz Sundburg was extremely efficient on both sides of the net for UT in its weekend sweep. She registered a .522 (13-1-22) attack percentage and tallied a 1.29 blocks per set.
• WMU's Michelle Moore set a season-high with 17 digs against Kent State on Friday and finished the weekend with 21 total kills to move into the top five in MAC history with 1,792 career kills. Jillian Mitchell handed out 83 assists for 11.86 assists per set to move into the top five in WMU history with 3,051 career assists. Freshman Jessica Brown led the Broncos with 24 kills this weekend, including a team-high 14 in the victory over Kent State. The Broncos continue to block well in conference play with 2.14 blocks per set over the weekend led by Ashley Turnage with eight blocks and five each for Brown, Doyle and Mitchell.
