Week 14: Clemson Volleyball News, Quotes, Games and Tournament Results
Tigers to play host to Virginia on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson Volleyball avenged a five-set loss from
earlier in the season by defeating the Hokies (18-11, 8-10 ACC), 3-1
(25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 27-25) on Friday night in front of 1,344 fans at
Jervey Gymnasium. Lia Proctor and Sandra Adeleye, the last two ACC
Players of the Week, each had 15 kills to lead the Tigers. Clemson has
now won seven out of the past eight matches.
Senior Istanbul, Turkey native Didem Ege entered the match needing six
digs to break the ACC career digs mark of 2,238 set by North
Carolina’s Brittany Eskola only a season ago. After recording only
four in the first three sets, she saved 14 attacks in the fourth set
to set the career mark, and ended the match with 2,251 career digs.
The Tigers used overpowering offense for much of the night, hitting
.292 or higher in each of the four sets. For the match, Kelsey Murphy
had 49 assists (12.25 assists/set) and led the Tigers to a .338
hitting night. Murphy was able to spread the ball around, as four
Tigers finished with nine or more kills. Cansu Ozdemir recorded her
first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, and also added
three service aces.
Proctor had her 13th double-double of the season, registering 15 kills
and 10 digs. Sandra Adeleye continued her hot hitting, registering 15
kills against only one attack error in 24 attacks for a .583 mark. She
also had four total blocks and five digs in the match. Natalie Patzin
also added nine kills in the win.
In total, the match saw 35 tied scores and 14 lead changes between the
teams, who are clawing toward an NCAA tournament berth.
Clemson took the first set handily, 25-16, and hitting .438 in the
set. Lia Proctor, coming off her ACC Player of the Week honor opened
with six kills in the first set. Natalie Patzin added four kills and
Cansu Ozdemir three. Murphy had 13 assists in the set as well.
Virginia Tech struck back in the second set, hitting .344 on their way
to a 25-20 set win. Ege didn’t record a dig in the set, but Adeleye
kept the Tigers in the set with four kills in as many attempts.
The Tigers fought back in the third set, taking an 11-7 lead on an
Adeleye and Patzin block. The Tigers held on to the edge throughout
the set, winning on a block by Rand, one of her four on the night.
With an 18-16 lead, Clemson went on a 7-2 to win the set and take
control of the match.
Clemson needed extra points to clinch the match, as Virginia Tech
fought back from a 24-21 deficit to tie the match at 24 and then take
a 25-24 lead. However, Clemson responded with a kills form Proctor to
tie the match, a block from Rand and Patzin to take a 26-25 lead, and
a Felicia Willoughby attack error sealed the match for Clemson.
Clemson returns to action on Saturday at 7:00 pm after the football
game as they take on the Virginia Cavaliers, who fell on the road in
three sets to Georgia Tech on Friday night. The Tigers will then play
host to the Yellow Jackets on Friday, Nov. 27 at 5:00 pm to close out
the 2009 regular season.
Clemson Volleyball Defeats Virginia, 3-1, on Saturday Night
Proctor's 20 kills and 16 digs paces Tigers
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson volleyball team moved closer to their goal
of an NCAA bid on Saturday, taking down the Virginia Cavaliers, 3-1
(22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-15) for their eighth win in the last nine
matches. Lia Proctor had her sixth 20-kill match of the season, and
had her 14th double-double, tallying 16 digs.
The Tigers (23-8, 13-6 ACC) dropped the first set, but roared back to
win the next three sets by a total of 19 points. Sandra Adeleye had 15
kills for the second consecutive night, and added five blocks to give
her nine on the weekend. Proctor, the reigning ACC Player of the Week,
had 35 kills against the two Virginia schools, and had a double-double
in each match.
Didem Ege was honored before the match for breaking the ACC’s all-time
record for career digs. She notched 21 more on Saturday night to giver
her 2,272 in her career, extending her ACC record.
Fellow Istanbul natives Cansu Ozdemir and Serenat Yaz posted career
highs in digs with 19 and nine, respectively. Lisa Jedlicka added
five kills and three block off the bench for Clemson, and freshman
Natalie Patzin had seven kills and seven digs on the night.
The Cavaliers (12-18, 7-12 ACC) were led by Simone Asque, who had 17 kills.
Virginia took the first set behind eight kills from Asque. Adeleye and
Proctor each had four kills and a block. The set was one of runs, as
UVA used a 5-1 run to take a 17-14 lead. The Tigers fought back to
take a 21-19 lead. However, Virginia fought back with a 6-1 run to
close out the set behind three Asque kills.
The Tigers controlled the second set throughout, jumping out to a
quick 8-4 cushion, and maintaining the edge fo the duration of the
set. The Tiger lead went to as many as seven at 23-16, and the Tigers
ended up taking the set, 25-18. Clemson hit .485 (17k-1ae-33a) in the
set, but also allowed the Cavaliers to hit .378. Proctor and Adeleye
each had five kills to counter the Cavalier attack.
The third set was the turning point of the match, as Clemson rallied
from a 19-14 deficit to win and take a 2-1 lead. The 11-4 run was
sparked by two kills apiece from Jedlicka and Proctor. Didem Ege had
eight digs in the set as Proctor again registered five kills.
The final set was all Tigers, using an early 11-0 run during Yaz’s
serve to take a 13-3 lead. Virginia pulled back to within six at 13-7,
but Clemson pulled away as they registered four blocks while Proctor
registered six kills. The Tigers held the Cavaliers to a -.061 hitting
mark in the set to win 25-15.
The Tigers close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 27 at 5:00pm
in Jervey Gymnasium. The Tigers will then await word on an NCAA
tournament bid, which will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 29 on
ESPNNEWS.
