Liberty Falls to Wake in Tournament Finale
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Saturday evening’s final match of the Black & Gold Challenge turned out to be a battle for second place, between Liberty and host Wake Forest. In the end, the Demon Deacons came up with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) triumph at Reynolds Gym.
Liberty will enter Big South Conference play at 5-7, after dropping its second match of the day to an ACC opponent. Meanwhile, Wake Forest, which began Saturday with a 0-10 record, won its second contest of the day.
Four different Lady Flames recorded early kills, as Liberty opened set one with a 7-3 lead. Wake Forest battled back, and the two teams were deadlocked at 19-19. Lauren McIntyre then tallied a pair of kills during the Demon Deacons’ set-closing 6-2 burst, which gave Wake Forest a 25-21 win.
The homestanding Demon Deacons finished set one with a .368 attack percentage, highlighted by Kadija Fornah’s half-dozen kills. Wake Forest libero Abby Miller also kept active, hustling her way to 13 digs. For the Lady Flames, outside hitters combined for nine kills, as Hannah Anderson (Fr., Rocklin, Calif.) had five and Nicki Scripko (Jr., Fayetteville, N.C.) added four.
Set two was the most competitive of the evening, including 10 ties and five lead changes. Kelly Haseman (So., L/DS, Three Rivers, Mich.), Brittany Pacella (R-Sr., RS, Reading, Pa.) and Courtney Cooper (R-Fr., L/DS, Forest, Va.) all recorded aces during a 9-3 Liberty spurt, which helped the Lady Flames go on top, 12-11.
For the second consecutive set, the score was tied at 19, before Wake Forest finished the stanza with a flourish. Carlin Salmon fashioned two kills and a block assist during the closing stages of her team’s 25-22 victory.
Liberty had more blocks (3-1) and aces (3-1) than the Demon Deacons during the middle set, but Wake Forest hit for a higher percentage, .182 to .121. Fornah and Scripko led their respective squads, with four kills apiece.
After the intermission, the blue-clad Lady Flames came out with increased energy. Liberty scored four points in a row on Haseman’s serve, taking a 10-3 edge on an Anderson kill. Once more, the home team made a rally late in the third set, leveling the score at 14-14. Andrea Beck contributed a kill and a block assist to a 4-0 burst, which gave Wake Forest the lead for good, 19-16. Shortly thereafter, Fornah’s 13th kill of the night sealed the Demon Deacons’ match-clinching 25-21 decision.
Both teams summed 23 digs during a defense-dominated final stanza, paced by Haseman’s 10. However, Wake Forest’s Kristen White pounded home a set-leading five kills to help her team wrap up the 3-0 victory.
On the evening, Wake Forest hit .261, while limiting Liberty to a .153 attack percentage. The Demon Deacons also outdug the Lady Flames by a 59-52 count. Both teams ended with four blocks, while Liberty doubled up its host in service aces, 4-2.
Scripko finished the contest with her second double-double of the day and fourth of the season. The Tar Heel State native led the Lady Flames with 11 kills and added a matching number of digs. For the second time on Saturday, her fellow outside hitter Anderson established a new career high, with 10 kills.
Defensively, Haseman paced all players with 21 digs, putting her over the 20-dig plateau for the third time in 2009. Lady Flames setter Kallie Corbin (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) made it three Lady Flames with double-digit digs, completing a double-double of her own with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Chelaine McCarty (Sr., MB, Houston, Ala.), Liberty’s lone representative on the all-tournament team, hit a match-high .412 with eight kills. For the weekend, the middle blocker hit .373 with 30 kills and seven blocks for the Lady Flames.
On the Wake Forest side of the net, Fornah was joined in double figures offensively by White’s 10 kills. Miller chipped in a team-leading 20 digs, while setter Kelsey Jones closed the contest with a match-high 37 assists.
Liberty will now return home to open the Big South Conference schedule, Friday at 7 p.m. versus Winthrop. The Lady Flames and Eagles have combined to win the last eight Big South titles.
