UCF Volleyball Drops Five-Set Decision to Florida A&M

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – The UCF (8-6) volleyball team concluded the Radisson-UCF Classic Sunday with a 3-2 (13-24, 10-24, 12-25, 14-22, 7-15), loss to visiting Florida A&M (3-5) at The Venue at UCF.

 

The Knights were led offensively by Erin Campbell (Kansas City, Mo.), who tallied 19 kills. Fellow outside hitter Kristin Fisher (Clearwater, Fla.) posted her second-straight double-double after totaling 16 kills and 16 digs, and Sarah Rex (Oldsmar, Fla.) recorded a team best .357 hitting percentage with eight kills and four blocks.

 

Andee Youngblood (Castle Rock, Colo.) paced the defense with eight total blocks while, Tory McCutcheon (Milton, Ontario) added seven blocks and four kills. Meredith Murphy (Austin, Texas) posted a team best 19 digs and extended her streak of matches with 10 or more digs to 11.

 

“Congratulations to Florida A&M for executing their game plan at a pretty high level, especially their middle hitting. It was better in this match than any other match of the tournament,” head coach Todd Dagenais said. “Our team is at an emotional and physical crossroads right now and where we go from here depends on a lot of little things. It depends on how we stay together as a group, how we support each other, how we hold each other accountable for little things and ultimately depends on looking at our individual skills.”

 

The Knights won the first set behind a .667 hitting percentage, two kills and three block assists from McCutcheon, while out-blocking the Rattlers, 5-2 as a team.

 

After dropping the next two sets, the UCF stormed back to post its best performance of the day in set four. The Black and Gold hit .354 with 20 kills and committed only three errors, led by Campbell’s eight kills and a .750 performance with three kills from Rex. McCutcheon continued to play strong in the set totaling three blocks for the Knights’ defense.

 

The momentum from set number four wasn’t enough to carry into the fifth and final set, however, as the Rattlers jumped on the home team early and never gave up their lead.

 

“I still believe this team can achieve the goals we set out to do,” Dagenais said. “It’s going to be difficult to win 20 matches now unless we really rock our conference, but the opportunities are there to do it. We just have to get better.”

 

The Knights are back in action Friday when they travel to face Conference USA-foe East Carolina on the road on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Following their match-up with the Pirates, UCF will challenge Marshall Sunday in a nationally-televised league-contest at 2 p.m. The tape-delayed match will air on CBS College Sports on Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.

 

Season tickets for the 2009 season are on sale now for only $30, with the Knights hosting eight remaining regular-season matches at The Venue at UCF throughout the year.

Volleyball Wins Two To Wrap Up Play In Tiger Invitational

--- Bulldogs defeat UALR, UAB in final day of Memphis tournament ---

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University volleyball team won its final two matches in the Memphis Tiger Invitational Saturday, moving the Bulldogs to 6-7 on the season. The win over the Trojans was Samford’s first-ever.  The win over UAB was its second in a series of 23 matches, first since 2001.

 

Samford defeated UALR in the noon match Saturday, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-23), and UAB in the evening match, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22).

 

“We did not come out strong in any set against UALR but made plays after 20 to win,” Samford head coach Derek Schroeder said. “That, more than anything, shows that we are maturing and continue to grow this season.  The UAB match was kind of an ugly match after a long four-match weekend. I was glad we made plays when we needed to in order to win some close sets. We took some big steps forward this weekend. We had been creeping along but took some very large strides towards our goals.”

 

The Bulldogs led for most of the first set against UALR, leading by as much as six at one time. However, the Trojans fought back to tie the score at 23 and took their first lead of the game, but Samford answered back and tied the score at 24 on a kill by Allie Bettinger then won the game on an ace by Bettinger and a block by Shelby Brandon and Rachel Gadberry.

 

Samford then dominated the second set after overcoming an early fight by the Trojans. UALR kept the game close until the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead by four on two kills by Bettinger and a couple of Trojan errors. Samford then forged ahead and won the second set, 25-18.

 

After falling behind by eight early in third set, the Bulldogs pulled back within three and eventually tied the score at 23. Samford was able to execute in the final minutes and win, 25-23, on a block by Neisler and Stangohr and a kill by Neisler.

 

Bettinger and Sheriden Stanoghr led the Bulldogs against the Trojans. Bettinger knocked down 13 kills while hitting .243 and adding seven digs, two aces and one assists. Stangohr tallied 12 kills, hitting .450, with four block assists, one block solo, two digs and one ace. Gadberry posted a team-high .571 hitting percentage with eight kills on 14 attempts and no error. She also added two block assists and one dig.

 

Hillary Fountain dished out 38 assists and seven digs while also grabbing three kills on 10 attempts with no errors and two block assists. Alexis Bauer led her team in digs with 12 while also grabbing three aces. Samantha Bland was near behind with eight digs and one assist. Elizabeth Neisler added seven kills, one block assist and one assist while Brandon had two kills, one dig and three block assists. Casey Garvey had two assists, two aces and six digs.

 

 UALR was led by Anita Bucur with 19 kills while Giuliana DeFrancesco dished out a team-high 34 assists and Emily Pepperman had 13 digs.

 

Samford took an early lead over the Blazers in the first set before UAB fought back to tie the game at 13. The Blazers briefly held the lead but a couple of errors gave Samford the lead back and the Bulldogs would go on to win the first set, 25022, on a kill by Stangohr.

 

The Bulldogs fell behind by as much as five in the second set but soon tied the score at 15 and took over from there. Back-to-back kills by Gadberry and Fountain put Samford ahead by two and with the help from a block by Fountain and Stangohr and kill by Neisler, the Bulldogs would go on to win the second set, 25-21.

 

Samford opened up the third set with consecutive kills Bettinger and Gadberry but the Blazers answered back a tied the score at two. The Bulldogs then took over the lead, going ahead by as much as three but UAB soon caught up and would go on to win, 25-22.

 

The score to the fourth set was similar to the third, except the tables were turned for the Bulldogs. The Blazers were the first to score in the final set but Samford quickly answered back with four straight kills, two by Brandon and one each by Gadberry and Bettinger. UAB briefly held a lead by as much as three but the Bulldogs fought back to tie the score at 16 and took over, going on to win, 25-22.

 

Against the Blazers, the Bulldogs were led by Bettinger, Neisler and Stangohr. Bettinger racked up 19 kills while hitting .245 and grabbing seven digs. Neisler added 12 kills, three digs, three block assists and one block solo while Stangohr knocked down 10 kills and had four digs, four block assists and two aces.

 

Fountain posted a season-high 50 assists along with nine digs, six kills and two block assists. Bauer also notched a career-high 28 digs while Garvey also had a career-high 13 digs. Bauer also had four assists and one kill while Garvey had two assists.

 

Brandon led the team in hitting with a .381 percentage, tallying eight kills on 21 attempts with no errors. She also added three digs, two block assists and one block solo. Gadberry added six kills, two digs and three block assists while Bland had nine digs, two assists and two aces.

 

UAB was led by Sam Serley with 14 digs followed by Savannah Pegg and Michelle Uzoh with 11 and 10, respectively. Alison Woods dished out a team-high 36 assists while Heather Thomas and MacKenzie Wilson with 18 and 10 digs, respectively.

 

Samford kicks of the conference season next weekend with a four-match home stand starting with UNC Greensboro and Elon, Sept. 26-27. Then, the Bulldogs will host Southern Conference rival Chattanooga on Wednesday, Sept. 30, before taking on Davidson, Oct. 4, to close out the two-week stint at home.

DUHAM, NH – With Sarah Reaves and Sofie Schlagintweit combining for 61 of ASU’s 91 kills on the day, the Sun Devil Volleyball team collected two more wins over Wyoming and New Hampshire to wrap the Holly Young Tournament Saturday night. ASU topped Wyoming 25-20, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-12 and New Hampshire 25-16, 25-6 and 25-17 en route to the tournament crown and their current 10-2 record.

First up on the day were the Wyoming Cowgirls, where ASU came out meaning business swinging a .444 team attack percentage in the first set with Sofie Schlagintweit killing six while the Devil D posted five blocks to stymie the Cowgirl offense to take a 25-20 win. Sarah Reaves joined the melee in the second set, killing seven with Camri Zwiesler stepped up to stuff three block assists as the Cowgirls were held to a .032 attack percentage in ASU’s 25-12 second set win.

The third set saw ASU fall out of sync as they hit only .073 to let Wyoming squeak back into the match with a 25-22 win to push it to four. Four was all ASU needed though as they put it back together with a .269 attack percentage and five service aces while posting six blocks to put away the Cowgirls 25-12.

In the nightcap, the Sun Devils faced the host with the most, the New Hampshire Wildcats where the Devil D came to shine again as Sonja Markanovich posted four block assists in the first set to hold UNH to a .029 attack percentage. Sofie Schlagintweit and Sarah Reaves both put down five kills apiece to lead the offense as ASU rolled out with a 25-17 win in set one. Set two was all A State as the offense threw down the hammer with a .526 attack percentage as the Sun Devils hit cruise control to a 25-6 win to take the 2-0 lead into the break.

The Wildcats rallied back in the third set but not enough as Sarah Reaves helped shut the door on the ‘Cats as she threw down eight kills in the set, led by Katie Crosby’s 15 assists as the Sun Devils won their fourth straight match with a 25-17 win in the third set.

Head Coach Jason Watson wrapped the day, saying “I thought we played really well today and showed immense progress in the right direction of the team and program. These matches have been a great opportunity for us to see where our strengths lie and what still needs to be worked on.”

The Sun Devils return home with the tournament title as well as three All-Tournament Team members in Sarah Johnson, Sarah Reaves and Sofie Schlagintweit. They return to the desert this week to open Pac-10 play against UCLA and USC next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena.

Miners Topped by No. 21 Arizona

EL PASO – In its final tuneup before Conference USA competitions kicks in full gear, the UTEP volleyball team concluded the Arizona Invitational with a 3-0 loss to the undefeated No. 21 Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Amy Sanders picked up 13 digs as fellow senior Catherine Chavez led the team with eight kills as the Miners struggled to get the offense going against a powerful Arizona team.

Setter Patty Jarmoc dished out 24 assists as Aidan Mooney and Sanders finished with seven kills each.

Arizona pounced to a 3-0 lead to begin the match and after three consecutive Miner points the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to take the lead that it would not give up through the remaining of the period. The home team took a commanding lead at 19-10 allowing two more UTEP points before finishing off the visiting team 22-12 to take a 1-0 lead of the match.

The second stanza saw a relentless Miner squad match Arizona point for point through the first 15 rallies. The Wildcats built a four-point lead at 11-7 and UTEP once again found itself playing catch up as the home squad took a 20-10 advantage down the stretch. A four-point Miner run cut the lead by seven, but at 22-15 it might have been too late as Arizona spoiled the comeback despite three failed set points to take the set at 25-17. 

A close third set was ended as Arizona broke the 8-8 tie on a four-point run to take a 12-8 lead over the Miners. A Sanders’ kill and assisted block cut the lead by two, but a pair of kills and consecutive aces put Arizona ahead by six. The Wildcats laid down five service aces through the third frame. With a commanding 22-14 lead, UTEP put up three more points to keep the set alive. But a dominant Wildcat defense finished off the Miners as the nationally ranked team claimed the match on its fifth ace of the set.

UTEP (7-6, 0-1) returns home for a three-game home stretch that begins with the second round of the I-10 rivalry against the NM State Aggies on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. The Miners resume conference play against SMU, Friday at 7 p.m., and Tulsa, Sunday 12 p.m.
