Week 7: Missouri Valley Conference Women's Volleyball News
MVC Volleyball Weekly Notebook: Top-Five Teams Square Off This Weekend
One-third of the way through the Missouri Valley Conference volleyball regular-season, Missouri State and UNI remain unbeaten in league matches, while Southern Illinois, Wichita State and Evansville all sit at 3-2 following last weekend's matches. Creighton posts an even 3-3 record, while Drake and Illinois State are both one match behind at 2-4. This weekend's conference slate will pit four of the Valley's top-five teams, as the Salukis and Purple Aces will challenge both the Bears and Shockers. In other action around the Valley, Illinois State and Indiana State will host Bradley and UNI, while Creighton heads to Des Moines, Iowa, to challenge Drake.
In this week's AVCA Coaches' Poll, Wichita State fell out of the rankings for the first time this season, following a setback at Creighton last weekend. The Shockers, Panthers and Bears all hold down a position among this week's "others receiving votes." Northern Iowa, who tallied league wins over Evansville and Southern Illinois last weekend, garnered 9 points in the poll.
This week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week is Missouri State's Kelley Michnowicz, the Defensive Player of the Week is Bethany Fuller of Missouri State and the Freshman of the Week is Creighton's Megan Bober.
Highlights from last week's MVC matches include Creighton's first-ever win over a ranked opponent, as the Bluejays knocked off No. 25 Wichita State, 3-1, winning their first match over a ranked team in 36 tries. Creighton junior libero Nayka Benitez also became the first player in school history to post 30 or more digs in back-to-back matches, tallying a career-high 36 in the win over the Shockers and 30 in the previous match against Illinois State.
Evansville's 3-2 victory over Illinois State last Saturday night marked just the second time in UE history the Purple Aces topped the Redbirds. Evansville junior Julie Sylvester and sophomore setter Ellen Sawin also moved into the top-10 in school history in digs and assists, respectively, following last weekend's performances.
Missouri State, now winners of five-straight, had performances from two student-athletes that were worthy of those leading the nation. Junior Cara Hackmann averaged 7.33 digs per set in two matches, besting the national lead of 6.77, and Bethany Fuller's 2.67 per set blocking average was more than a block per set above the 1.62 average of the nation's best blocker.
En route to its current 12 consecutive wins, UNI's 5-0 league start is its best in Valley action since the Panthers won their first eight MVC matches in 2003.
In Wichita State's sweep of Drake last Saturday, junior middle blocker Sarah McGee set the Shocker school record for hitting percentage in a match, tallying 10 kills on 12 swings for a .833 hitting percentage. The previous record was .818 held by Elizabeth Meyers and Carrie Gerth. Meyers (9-0-11) hit .818 against South Florida on Sept. 3, 2005, while Gerth (10-1-11) hit .818 against New Mexico on Sept. 5, 1999.

Central Arkansas Wins School Record 15th Consecutive Match
From September 4 to the present, Central Arkansas has been nearly perfect winning its last 15 matches, setting a new school record.
Of those 15 matches, 10 have been sweeps giving UCA 11 on the year, three shy of the team record of 14 set in 2007 and again in 2008.
The Sugar Bears currently have a 45-5 sets win-loss total through their last 15 matches, the most set wins of any league team during that span.
Central Arkansas leads the Southland in three league categories. As a team, the Sugar Bears are hitting .260 with 14.21 kills and 13.08 assists per set. Their .164 opponent hitting percentage and 1.66 service aces per set ranks third and second respectively and a 15.21 digs per set rank fourth and 1.84 blocks rank sixth.
Individually, UCA is the only league team with three players in the top 10 in hitting percentage as the Sugar Bears hold three of the top seven spots in hitting percentage. Senior Evaree Franklin is second (.341), junior Chloe Smith is sixth (.309) and freshman Taylor Hammonds is seventh (.322). Smith leads the league and if eligible for NCAA rankings would be fifth in the nation with 4.82 kills per set.
Senior Robyn Smith, who has led the Southland in assists in each of the last two seasons, is the current league leader with 11.51 per set and has the most overall with 633 on the year. If eligible, Robyn Smith would currently rank 15th in the NCAA in assists per set. Sophomore Cristin Curl leads the conference with 4.6 digs per set and is second overall with 284.
Lamar Wins Four Straight
After dropping three consecutive matches the Lamar Lady Cardinals have turned around to regain control of their season winning their last four matches with a combined 12-1 score.
Three of the Lamar’s wins have come against league opponents giving the Lady Cardinals a 3-1 league record tying them for the West Division lead with rival Sam Houston State.
During Lamar’s four match win streak senior Lauren Holdorff ranks third in the league with a .384 hitting percentage in addition to 57 kills ranking ninth. Senior Adrianne Meengs ranks sixth with 9.62 assists per set with 154 overall ranking ninth. Sophomore Bailey Smith ranks fifth in digs per set with 3.88 and is eighth overall with 62 digs.
Carli Kolbe Leads League With 12 Double-doubles
Sam Houston State sophomore Carli Kolbe leads the Southland with 12 double-doubles. The league’s current kills leader (295), Kolbe has recorded a double-double against eight different opponents this season with two coming against Lamar in conference play. In those nine matches, Kolbe has 199 kills and 147 digs for a 16.58 kills and 12.25 digs average. Kolbe’s 28 kills vs. Texas State are the most by a player in a conference match this season.
Sam Houston State Sweeps First Player of the Week Awards
For the first time in Southland history, Sam Houston State has swept the conference volleyball player of the week awards as sophomore Carli Kolbe and freshman Kaylee Hawkins were named the offensive and defensive players of the week respectively by vote of the league’s sports information directors. The Southland volleyball player of the week award began in the 1987 season with one award given to the most outstanding student-athlete. But in the 2000 season, league head coaches voted to recognize the offensive and defensive efforts of its players and began to award two players of the week. Both Kolbe and Hawkins’ awards are their first and team’s first of the season.
