College Volleyball Players Honored Week 7: LSU Volleyball's Sam Dabbs Earns AVCA National Player of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. – LSU setter Sam Dabbs made program history Tuesday after being selected the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association [AVCA] National Player of Week. She is the first Tiger to earn this prestigious honor from the governing body of collegiate volleyball.

 

“Sam is truly one of the premier setters of her class,” head coach Fran Flory said. “The great thing for me is watching her continue to grow. When you get these awards, it really lends a lot of credibility and certainly she’s very deserving of these honors. I can’t be happier for Sam, and I’ve never been more excited for a player to get an award after the work put in and dedication she’s shown here.”

 

Dabbs dished out a season-best 13.83 assists per set as LSU (13-4, 7-1 SEC) extended its winning streak to six matches with a pair of sweeps over South Carolina and then-No. 6 Florida last weekend. She set the Tigers to a .308 team hitting percentage highlighted by a .333 clip against the Gators. A majority of her 49 assists fueled LSU’s middle attack of Brittnee Cooper, Michele Williams and Lauren DeGirolamo to 38 kills on a crisp .567 hitting percentage as the Tigers defeated Florida for the first time since 1991.  

 

Dabbs turned in a solid performance against South Carolina and dished out 34 assists to go along with 12 digs and nine kills to fall one spike shy of her second career triple-double. She also posted 3.33 digs per set and currently paces the SEC with 11.70 helpers per set in league matches. 

 

“It’s a huge honor that I have to dedicate to my teammates,” Dabbs said. “Winning this type of an award brings a lot of respect to our program. I also want to thank our coaches, who have worked extremely hard with me after practice.”

 

 LSU squares off against Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m. inside the Maravich Center. The Tigers will wear pink uniforms as part of their “Dig Pink” match to benefit the Side-Out Foundation. Dr. KC White, Dean of Students and Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Life, will lead a 1-mile ‘Victory Walk’ that begins at 5:30 p.m. starting at the UREC, moves down ‘Victory Hill’ and ends at the Maravich Center. She is a breast cancer survivor and currently in the final rounds of chemotherapy treatment.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Dartmouth sophomore outside hitter Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) posted spectacular numbers last weekend, helping the Big Green win its third-straight Ivy League game in a thrilling 3-2 defeat of Columbia on Friday. She recorded a season-high 23 kills and a career-high 27 digs in the five-set match. The next night against Cornell she again had a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. She hit .277 for the weekend, adding one service ace. Baird currently leads Dartmouth in kills with 199 (3.69) and is second with 164 digs (3.04). Baird has also added nine service aces and 13 total blocks this season. She now has seven double-doubles for the year.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Penn freshman right side hitter Lauren Martin (Bedford, Texas) led the Quaker attack to two Ivy victories over the weekend, including a dramatic five-set win over Yale. Martin hit .571 and had 15 kills in a sweep over Brown and followed it up with a career high 21 kills in Penn’s win over defending Ivy champion Yale.

HONOR ROLL

Brown junior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a team-high 20 kills over the weekend, adding an ace, three blocks, and 21 digs as the Bears pushed Princeton to four sets.

Columbia first-year outside hitter Megan Gaughn (Winter Park, Fla.) led the Lions with 46 kills in three games this past week. Gaughn had a double-double in Columbia’s five-set loss to Dartmouth, with 21 kills and 27 digs. She also added three service aces in the loss. Against Central Connecticut, Gaughn had 13 kills, with a .242 attach percentage, and another three service aces to go along with her seven digs and three blocks. And in Columbia’s loss to Harvard, Gaughn notched 12 kills with only three errors, for a .257 attack percentage. The outside hitter currently leadfs the Lions with 271 kills, a .272 season attack percentage, and 19 service aces. She is also second on the team in digs, with 219, or 3.32 digs per set.

Cornell senior libero Megan Mushovic (Coronado, Calif.) was an integral part of the Big Red’s defensive effort as it split a pair of contests this weekend. In Cornell’s 3-1 loss to Harvard, she registered a team-high 19 digs, to go along with three service aces. The following afternoon in a 3-1 victory over Dartmouth, Mushovic led three Big Red players with double-digit digs, registering a match-high 30 digs. Playing in all eight sets over the course of the weekend, Mushovic registered 49 digs (6.1 digs per set), four service aces (0.5 per set) and had just two service receptions errors. 

Dartmouth senior Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) was solid for the Big Green, posting 20 kills and 14 digs in Friday night's win over Columbia. The next night against Cornell, she just missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.

Harvard sophomore middle blocker Anne Carroll Ingersoll (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.) led the Crimson with 3.28 kills and 1.14 blocks per set in a sweep of Cornell and Columbia. She posted a match-high 12 kills and five blocks in Harvard’s 3-1 win over Cornell. It was the first win for the Crimson over the Big Red in five years and first in Ithaca since 2002. She registered 11 kills, a career-high eight digs and three blocks in the 3-0 shutout of Columbia. Ingersoll leads the Crimson with 2.89 kills per set,  a .326 hitting percentage and 0.98 blocks per set.

Penn junior Julia Swanson was an all-around force for Penn in two Ivy victories over the weekend. Against defending conference champion Yale, Swanson turned in a dominating performance with 17 kills, 17 digs and five block assists to help Penn to the five set victory. She finished the weekend with 23 kills and 28 digs as the Quakers stayed unbeaten in conference play.

Princeton senior outside hitter Sheena Donohue (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the Tigers to a road split by averaging 4.6 kills and 4.3 digs per set in a road split. In the loss to Yale she has 12 kills and 9 digs. She hit .273 for the weekend and clinched Princeton's first road win of the season with three straight kills to rally and close out the fourth set at Brown - in a match that saw her dominate with 20 kills and 21 digs.

Yale senior outside hitter Cat Dailey (Newport Beach, Calif.) averaged 5.00 kills and 3.00 digs per set as the Bulldogs split an Ivy League home weekend. The reigning Ivy Player of the Year also dished out four assists, landed three aces and had a hand in five blocks in eight sets of action. Against Princeton on Friday night, Dailey led all players with 14 kills, hitting .375 for the match. She also contributed eight digs, two aces and an assist in the Yale sweep of the Tigers. Dailey also posted the match high on Saturday with 26 kills in a five-set loss to Penn. The senior added 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Dailey rounded out her statline against the Quakers with three assists, an ace and five blocks.

Penn junior setter Megan Tryon (Los Angeles, Calif.) continued her impressive season with a pair of quality performances over the weekend.  In the Quakers' five-set win over defending Ivy champion Yale, she had 60 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Against Brown, Tryon had five kills, six digs and 39 assists as Penn swept the Bears in three sets.

Irvine, Calif. - A pair of double-doubles by senior outside hitter Mallori Gibson guided the Pacific Tigers to a 2-0 week to improve to 4-2 in Big West play and earned her Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors. 

This is the second weekly accolade of Gibson’s career.

In Friday’s match versus Cal State Fullerton, who was receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll, the Bakersfield, Calif., native tallied her first of two double-doubles on the week with 16 kills and 11 digs. Gibson added two service aces and two block assists in the 3-1 win over the Titans.

The following evening she registered a .400 hitting percentage, while recording a season-high 21 kills and 15 digs against nationally-ranked Long Beach State for a back-to-back double-double performance. The Tigers’ 3-1 victory handed the 49ers their first conference loss of the year.

For the week, Gibson averaged 4.62 kills and 3.25 digs per set and fired a .322 hitting attack.

RICHMOND, VA - William and Mary senior Lindsey Pflugner (Sarasota, Fla.) was selected by the Colonial Athletic Association Monday as its Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, after helping lead the Tribe to a pair of conference victories last season. It is the first weekly honor for Pflugner, and fourth for the team this season. 

Pflugner opened her weekend on Friday night with a career-high 34 digs against Georgia State as the Tribe won 3-1. The performance ranks third in school history for four-set matches, and sixth all-time for all matches. Saturday night in the 3-0 victory over UNC Wilmington, Pflugner added another 18 digs to her total, as well as picking up her first kill of the season. In the match, she surpassedErin Simmons '06 for fourth on the career digs list, and now has 1,118 in her four years. Pflugner's 7.43 digs per set average this weekend led all players in the conference by more than 1.7 digs per set, and lifted her season average to 5.18, 20th-best in the nation. 

Pflugner and her teammates are back in action tomorrow night, closing out the non-conference schedule with a 7 p.m. match at American University in Washington, D.C.

Freshman outside hitter averaged 4.88 kills per set, earns first C-USA weekly award

 

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball freshman Tyler Henderson was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

 

The honor is the first career weekly conference award for the Oklahoma City native and Holland Hall graduate. In two matches last weekend, Henderson tallied 39 kills (4.88 per set) with five blocks, totaling 42.5 points (5.31 points per set), and hit .341 in road wins at Rice and Houston.

 

“We’re excited that she has been given recognition for what she has done for us this year,” Tulsa Head Coach Ed Allen said. “She is really improving as a player. We’ve had to lean on her and Jen Eichler a lot over the last couple of weeks, and she is really starting to grow and mature as a player. We’re excited about what she can become over the next four years.”

 

Henderson recorded 13 kills to help lead the Golden Hurricane to a 3-0 sweep of Rice on Friday. On Sunday, she matched a career high by slamming 26 kills, and she hit .412, and blocked four attacks (two solo, two assists), scoring 29 points to lead Tulsa to its fourth consecutive C-USA victory.

 

The Golden Hurricane returns home to the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center this weekend to begin a three-week home stand. TU plays Memphis Friday at 7 p.m. and UAB Sunday at 1 p.m.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A pair of Long Island University volleyball players were honored with Northeast Conference awards after strong performances as the Blackbirds won three matches last weekend. Senior Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia) was named NEC Player of the Week for the second time this season and freshman Breanna Cullity (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned NEC Rookie of the Week accolades.

 

Simic turned in a troika of stellar performances as the Blackbirds stretched their winning streak to six matches. In a 3-0 sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson on Oct. 10, the Serbia native turned in nine kills and six digs. Later in the day, she registered a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs while hitting a scandalous .500 for the match as LIU swept Quinnipiac. On Oct. 11, Simic netted 12 kills and 17 digs as the Blackbirds knocked out Sacred Heart in three sets. It was her ninth double-double of the season.

 

For the week, Simic averaged 4.56 kills and 3.78 digs per set, adding eight blocks and five aces. She also earned the award on Sept. 14.

 

Cullity earns her first NEC Rookie of the Week honor for a strong showing as the Blackbirds moved to 6-0 in league play. Over three matches for the week, she totaled 15 kills (2.14 per set), six blocks (0.86 per set), three assists (0.43 per set) and a dig, while hitting .263.

 

Long Island will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13 with a visit to Hofstra at 7:00 p.m.

College Volleyball Players Honored Week 7: Loren Thomas Earns BSC Freshman of the Week Honor   

LYNCHBURG, Va. – For the second time in the last three weeks, Loren Thomas has been named the Big South Volleyball Freshman of the Week. The Ocoee, Fla., native helped the Lady Flames go 2-1 last week with her strong play at the middle blocker spot.

     Thomas hit a team-high .370 with 23 kills for the week and shared the team lead with nine blocks. Her best performance came Friday evening, when the freshman sparked the Lady Flames to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Gardner-Webb.

     After Liberty fell behind 2-0 to start the match, Thomas hit .875 with seven kills and two blocks during the final three sets against the Bulldogs. Three of her kills came during the fifth and deciding set. For the match, Thomas converted a career-high 11 of her 13 attacks into kills, for an impressive .846 attack percentage.

     Thomas is one of only two players who have been named Big South Freshman of the Week multiple times this season. Winthrop middle blocker Baylee Strachan has also been recognized twice.

     Thomas enters the week ranked first on the team and third in the Big South with 53 blocks. She is also second on the Lady Flames with a .249 attack percentage.

     The Lady Flames (10-8, 5-1 Big South), currently tied with Winthrop for second place in the Big South standings, will wrap up a three-match road swing Tuesday at High Point. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Millis Center.

No. 20 Billikens travel to Xavier, Dayton this weekend  

ST. LOUIS – After leading Saint Louis with 4.17 kills per set and back-to-back double-doubles last weekend, senior Bridget Fonke (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Joseph’s) was selected as the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week Monday.

Fonke helped the Billikens remain unbeaten in league play with sweeps of George Washington and Charlotte at Chaifetz Pavilion last weekend. The outside hitter turned in a match-leading 13 kills with a match-high tying 11 digs and a .321 hitting percentage in the win over the Colonials. Against the 49ers, Fonke collected a match-high 12 kills, hit at a .478 clip and contributed 10 digs. She also recorded five service aces, which is the most by a Billiken this season, and brings her career total to 129. That total puts her in fifth place on SLU’s career service aces list.

In A-10 matches this season, Fonke is tied for third among league players with 0.40 service aces per set, fifth with 3.93 points per set and 3.27 kills per set and seventh with a .351 hitting percentage. She leads the Billikens with 19 service aces, ranks second with 3.07 kills per set and eight solo blocks and is tied for second with 2.59 digs per set. Fonke, who became the 11^th member of SLU’s 1,000-kill club earlier this season, ranks 10^th all time with 1,073 career kills.    

The No. 20 Billikens, who are the only A-10 club not to drop a set in league action so far this season, take to the road to face two of the top teams in the A-10 this weekend. SLU plays Xavier in Cincinnati Friday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. (CT) before battling Dayton on its home court Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT).

FIU is receiving votes in the AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll and ranks 18th in the NCAA RPI Rankings

 

 

NEW ORLEANS - Senior Yarimar Rosa has been tabbed Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the third consecutive week, as determined by a vote of the league's 13 head coaches. Rosa now owns a career Sun Belt record 12 SBC Player of the Week citations.

 

This past weekend, Rosa led FIU to its fourth consecutive unbeaten weekend, as the Panthers defeated Denver, 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-23), and North Texas, 3-0, (25-22, 25-22, 25-23), on the road.

 

Rosa recorded a team-high 40 kills over both matches for a 6.67 kills per set mark. She secured 21 kills versus Denver (7.00 kills per set) and 19 kills against North Texas (6.33 kills per set). Versus the Pioneers, the outside hitter tallied a hitting percentage of .469 and also contributed on the defensive end with nine digs. Against the Mean Green, Rosa hit at a clip of .361 and once again delivered on defense with five digs and one block.

 

FIU is off to its best start in school history with an overall record of 17-2 and an unblemished mark of 7-0 in league play. The Panthers received nine votes in the latest edition of the AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll, released Oct. 12, and ranks 18th in the first 2009 NCAA Women's Volleyball RPI Rankings, also released this afternoon.

 

The Panthers are winners of 10 straight matches and have shut out 12 opponents on the year, including eight of its last 10. FIU returns to action this weekend when the Panthers host Troy (Friday, Oct. 16; 6:30 p.m.) and South Alabama (Sunday, Oct. 18; 1 p.m.) at the U.S. Century Bank Arena.

College Volleyball Players Honored Week 7: Kvapilova Wins Second Straight CAA Rookie Award

KVAPILOVA STILL A SMASH, COLLECTS SECOND STRAIGHT CAA ROOKIE AWARD 

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University freshman Michala Kvapilova (Liberec, Czech) picked up her second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week award Monday. 

The 6-1 rookie averaged 3.36 kills, 2.18 digs and hit .363 in three matches to lead VCU to a 2-1 record. 

Kvapilova blasted a season-high 19 kills with 12 digs, five blocks and three aces in the Rams’ 3-2 loss to George Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 7. She followed that performance with 15 kills, three aces and a .500 hitting percentage in VCU’s 3-0 rout of UNC Wilmington on Friday, Oct. 9. 

With wins over UNCW and Georgia State this weekend, the Rams (15-7) maintained a hold on second place in the CAA with a 4-1 mark. 

This season, Kvapilova is averaging 2.35 kills and 2.09 blocks per set. She’s also tied for the team lead with 25 service aces. However, it’s her play of late that has turned heads. In her last six matches, Kvapilova has hit .326 and averaged 3.57 kills, 1.96 digs and 0.48 blocks per set. 

VCU and Kvapilova return to the floor on Friday, Oct. 16, when they host William & Mary at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 8 p.m. in a battle for sole possession of second place in the league standings.

College Volleyball Players Honored Week 7:  Samantha Good Named MAAC Rookie of the Week for Second Time

Canisius College freshman Samantha Good was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It’s the second time in the last three weeks that Good has received the honor.

In two Canisius road victories last weekend, Good led the Canisius offense by averaging 3.44 kills per set. Good had 13 kills and five blocks in the five-set win at Loyola – the fourth time this season Good has had 10 kills and five blocks in a match. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker then had a team-high 18 kills, the fifth time in six matches Good has led the Griffs in kills, to go along with three service aces and seven digs – both career highs – in the win at Rider.

Good leads the team at 2.68 kills per set on the season. In the team’s six MAAC matches, Good leads the team and ranks eighth in MAAC at 3.61 kills per set and is fourth in the league in hitting percentage at .297 (leading MAAC freshmen in both categories).

Canisius, sitting at 8-10 overall, 5-3 in the MAAC and in a tie for third place in the conference standings, have three home matches in four days at the Koessler Athletic Center this week. The homestand starts on Thursday, when the Golden Griffins host Niagara, with match time set for 6 p.m.

Irving, Texas -- Rice University volleyball player Meredith Schamun (Murrieta, Calif.) has been selected as Conference USA’s Setter of the Week (Oct. 12). Schamun’s 12.00 assists per set last week was a C-USA best. She also tops the overall chart with a 11.71 APS average. The junior dished out a  match-high 35 assists against Houston, followed by a match-best 30 vs. Tulsa. In Sunday’s four-set win over SMU, Schamun was credited with 55 assists, the most for the week for a four-set match, and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. 

This is Schamun’s second C-USA Setter of the Week honor this year and fifth of her career.

College Volleyball Players Honored Week 7:  Volleyball's Sam Dabbs Tabbed SEC Offensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A day after LSU volleyball’s historic sweep over No. 6 Florida, setter Sam Dabbs picked up SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors Monday as announced by the league office. This is Dabbs’ first career SEC weekly award.

 

“Sam was extremely good all weekend and we worked hard during the last two weeks to get her to make good choices,” head coach Fran Flory said. “She was outstanding and the key to our success last weekend.”

 

Dabbs distributed a season-best 13.83 assists per set as LSU cranked a .308 team hitting percentage over the weekend highlighted by a .333 clip against No. 6 Florida. She dished out 49 assists against the Gators and set a new benchmark for SEC setters on the season in a three-set match.

 

Dabbs fueled LSU’s middle attack of Brittnee Cooper, Michele Williams and Lauren DeGirolamo to 38 kills on a scorching .567 hitting percentage against Florida. She also turned in a solid performance against South Carolina and dished out 34 assists to go along with 12 digs and nine kills to fall one spike shy of her second career triple-double.

 

The San Antonio native also posted 3.33 digs per set and currently paces the SEC with 11.70 helpers per set in league matches. 

 

LSU squares off against Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m. inside the Maravich Center. The Tigers will wear pink uniforms as part of their “Dig Pink” match to benefit the Sideout Foundation.
