Blazers travel to SMU and Tulsa as league season reaches midpoint
(Oct. 15, 2009)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team opens a four-match road stretch this weekend with conference contests at SMU and Tulsa.
The Blazers travel to Dallas, Texas, to battle the Mustangs on Friday at 7 p.m. CT and then head on to Tulsa, Okla., to meet the Golden Hurricane on Sunday at 1 p.m CT.
UAB (11-10 overall) and Tulsa (14-5) enter the weekend in a three-way tie with Marshall for fourth place in the Conference USA standings at 4-2 in league play. SMU (13-7) is one game behind the Blazers and Golden Hurricane, sitting in seventh place at 3-3 in the conference.
UAB is coming off back-to-back home wins, having swept East Carolina, 3-0, this past Sunday and defeated Tennessee State by the same score on Tuesday in non-conference action.
Three Blazers finished with double-digit kill totals in just three sets against Tennessee State, led by Michelle Uzoh and Savannah Pegg with 12 each. Uzoh, who leads the team with a .361 attack percentage, continues to be a force both offensively and defensively. The junior middle blocker leads Conference USA with a 1.16 blocks-per-set average and is one of three Blazers in the top 15 in that category (Patty Paniagua, 1.02, 6th; Sam Serley, 0.93, 11th).
The last time UAB matched up with SMU and Tulsa was last season when the Blazers earned 3-0 sweeps over both teams during a school-record 16-match winning streak in the middle of the year. Both of those matches were played in Birmingham.
UAB holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series with SMU, while the series between the Blazers and Tulsa is tied at 3-3.
SMU had a three-match winning streak snapped in its last outing with a 3-1 loss last Saturday at Rice. That defeat came on the heels of a 3-0 win over Houston for the Mustangs, which have won 10 of their past 13 matches. Dana Powell leads SMU offensively with 3.90 kills per set, while Kendra Kahanek ranks second in C-USA in blocks behind Uzoh with 1.14 per frame.
Tulsa has won four straight contests entering this weekend’s action, and the Golden Hurricane hosts Memphis on Friday before playing UAB on Sunday. Last weekend, Tulsa picked up a 3-0 win over Rice and a 3-2 victory over Houston on the road. Tulsa’s Tyler Henderson ranks second in C-USA with 4.30 kills per set, and libero Jessica Adams is second in the league with 4.93 digs per frame.
