Irvine, Calif. - For the second straight week and fourth time this season, UC Santa Barbara’s Rebecca Saraceno (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo

Union HS) has captured Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week Accolades. She becomes just the sixth player to garner four or more

weekly accolades in one season with the most recent being Cal Poly’s Kylie Atherstone, who received a league-high six honors in 2007.

Saraceno guided the Gauchos to a 2-0 week with wins over then-No. 19 UC Irvine and UC Riverside, improving their conference mark to 6-3. In

the five-set marathon at UC Irvine, the senior outside hitter notched her 13th double-double of the season with 28 kills and 13 digs. Friday’s outing

marked the fourth consecutive match in which Saraceno recorded at least 27 kills.

She followed up that stellar performance with a 13-kill, seven-dig outing in UC Santa Barbara’s sweep over UC Riverside Saturday night. In three

sets, Saraceno tallied a .162 hitting percentage and also recorded one service ace and one block.

For the week, Saraceno averaged 5.23 kills and 2.50 digs per game while hitting a .184 clip.

CONFERENCE USA VOLLEYBALL SHOOTING STARS (Fri., Oct. 23)

at SMU 3, Rice 2  (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 7-15)
Kathryn Wilkerson had 15 kills and 20 digs to lead SMU (16-7, 6-3 C-USA) to a 3-2 victory over Rice at Moody Coliseum.  The Owls (14-7, 6-4 C-USA) were led by sophomore Ashleigh McCord's 23 kills, which tied her and the team's season-high output for kills in a match. Kendra Kahanek finished with six blocks, becoming the all-time career blocks leader at SMU with 486. She surpassed Natalie Peters mark of 484 set in 2008.



at Tulsa 3, Houston 0  (25-21, 25-14, 25-12)

Hannah Stout hit .636 and had five blocks, and Jennifer Eichler and Julia Kenealy each had eight blocks as Tulsa (18-5, 7-2 C-USA) used a barrage of blocks a solid defense to sweep Houston (7-18, 4-6 C-USA) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane takes on Rice Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Dig Pink match to support breast cancer research and awareness, which will be televised by CBS College Sports.



at UCF 3, East Carolina 0  (25-13, 33-31, 31-29)

Behind 18 kills from sophomore Kristin Fisher, UCF (11-12, 3-7 C-USA) swept East Carolina at The Venue in Orlando. Aside from Fisher, the Knights got double-digit kills from junior Lauren Williams, who posted a season-high 12 kills, while hitting .458 and adding three blocks. ECU (9-13, 2-8 C-USA) was led by senior setter Hannah Fenker who notched a double-double for the third-straight match, picking up 37 assists to go along with 14 digs while classmate Stephanie Turner collected her fourth double-double of the campaign, leading the offense with 14 kills and matching Fenker with 14 digs.



at Tulane 3, UAB 0  (25-18, 25-18, 25-15)

Senior outside hitter Ksenija Vlaskovic had 10 digs, nine kills and a four service aces as Tulane (13-6, 8-2 C-USA) swept UAB (11-13, 4-5 C-USA) in Fogelman Arena. With the win, Tulane extended its winning streak to four. Andrea Lalic, Sam Serley and Patty Paniagua tallied five kills apiece to lead UAB offensively.


at UTEP 3, Memphis 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15)
With a 3-0 sweep over Memphis, UTEP snapped a six-match skid at Memorial Gym. Senior outside hitter Catherine Chavez once again led the Miners with a match-high 16 kills on a .324 clip. She was the only player to record double-digit kills for the night while adding seven digs and three blocks. Memphis was led by 25 assists and 11 digs, while Becky Shaffer paced the team with 17 digs.

Women's College Volleyball Game Information Week 9: Georgia State Volleyball Returns to CAA Play with UNC Wilmington Saturday 

ATLANTA - The Georgia State volleyball team returns to CAA play for a
crucial match-up with UNC Wilmington on Saturday at Hanover Hall in
Wilmington, N.C. The Panthers start a stretch of five straight CAA road
matches, looking to move back among the top four to qualify for the CAA
Championship in late November.

The Panthers enter the match 16-7 overall and 3-4 in the CAA, currently
tied for sixth place, 1 ½ games back of VCU for the final spot midway
thru conference play. UNC Wilmington, which will play North Carolina
Central on Friday night before taking on State on Saturday, enters the
weekend 11-12 and 2-5 in the CAA. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

Georgia State has seen a great deal of success when matching up with
the Seahawks. The Panthers own an 11-1 all-time record and have won 11
straight in the series. Earlier this year, the Panthers earned a 3-1 win
over UNC Wilmington at the GSU Sports Arena to open CAA play. Georgia
State has never lost at Hanover Hall, with the only loss in the series
coming on a neutral court in 1988.

On Tuesday, senior Jocelyn Waldern played a near flawless match to lead
Georgia State to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) win over former Atlantic
Sun Conference rival Mercer in Macon. Waldern, the Panthers lone senior,
finished just shy of a triple-double with 11 kills, nine digs and a
career-high seven total blocks, while hitting at a .300 clip.

The win also guaranteed the Panthers a winning record for the second
time in three years. State has tied the most wins in a season under head
coach Mike Webster, with a minimum of seven matches remaining.

Also in the win, junior Ashley Jones and sophomore Chelsea Perry each
contributed double-doubles. Jones, who is tied for the CAA lead with
five triple-doubles, scored a team-high 13 kills, while adding 11 digs,
six assists and four total blocks. Perry, who stands first in the CAA in
service aces per set, scored 28 assists and 12 digs in the win.

Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell moved into sixth on the Panther
all-time digs list after scoring 18 in the match. Cantrell moved ahead
of Beth Van Fleet (1995-98) and now has 1,031 in her career. The
Rockwall, Texas native, who has 389 digs on the season, moved into a tie
for seventh place in digs in a single season.

UNC Wilmington split a pair of CAA matches last weekend, falling to
Delaware 3-0 on Friday night, before sweeping Towson on Sunday.

After this weekend, the Panthers will travel to Virginia next weekend
to face James Madison and Georgia Mason. Georgia State will not return
home until November 13th, the final weekend of the regular season, as
the Panthers will take on VCU at 5:30 p.m.

Marshall (18-5, 6-3 C-USA) received a 16-kill performance from Emily Sullivan, an Elizabeth Fleming double-double and clutch serving from Elizabeth Herman and Ryanne Milligan to defeat Southern Miss (20-4, 8-2 C-USA) for the second time this season, 3-0, at the Reed Green Coliseum. Ashley Mell recorded 16 kills for the Golden Eagles, along with Maia Ivanova registering a match-high 23 digs in the loss. Starter Angela Hlavaty did not play due to illness.

Coaches, players and fans vote to win the award for Kennesaw State junior

Gulley Play Nominated for AVCA Play of the Week

 

MACON, Ga. – Senior Chelsey Denesha tallied 18 kills while junior Sabrita Gulley made 17 kills and 11 digs to lead Kennesaw State to one of the biggest wins in program history; a 3-1 win against Belmont in an Atlantic Sun Conference match, Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

 

Gulley's play from her back in the fourth set of the match earned her a nomination for AVCA Play of the Week. AVCA member schools have the opportunity to submit up to three plays per week to be voted on by coaches, players, fans and the general public for the chance to be named Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week. If one play defined the effort of Gulley and her teammates in the match, it came with the Owls trailing 20-18 in the fourth set. A KSU attack was blocked back by Belmont, and with the Owls scrambling, Gulley found herself down on the court with the ball coming towards her.

 

The junior was successful getting the ball back on Belmont's side with a one-handed swipe at the ball, but the Bruins were quickly setting up for an attack. "In my mind the whole time I'm thinking 'If I get up and block this ball, how great would that be?' So I got up as quickly as I could," Gulley said. The only blocker in position, Gulley literally rose to the occasion. The North Chicago, Ill., native blocked the attack from Belmont's Tara Blood straight down into Belmont's side of the court, touching off an explosion of emotion and bringing the Owls back within a point, 20-19.

A top performer for the A-Sun the past week, Gulley tallied 4.18 kills per set, leading the Owls to a 2-1 week in the A-Sun and into sixth place in the conference. On Tuesday against Mercer, Gulley notched a match-high 21 kills to go with 16 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. After leading the Owls with eight kills and 11 digs against Lipscomb Friday night, Gulley notched 17 kills and 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season Saturday in the Owls' 3-1 win against Belmont. Gulley made 11 kills with just one error over the last two sets as Kennesaw State earned its first win against Belmont in program history. The human services major also collected three total blocks, including two solo blocks, in the win.

NEC Player of the Week
Jessica Colberg, Sacred Heart

So., OH, Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly

Colberg earns NEC Player of the Week after making a switch from her normal libero position last week to outside hitter filling in for injured teammate Maile Hetherington. It was the first time in her collegiate career she had played anywhere besides libero and she responded in a big way, collecting 32 kills in a perfect 3-0 week for the Pioneers. She hit an impressive .421 and also compiled 31 digs, two solo blocks and a pair of service aces. In a 3-0 win over Hartford, Colberg had 17 kills and just one error - hitting .667 - with 12 digs and a service ace. In a 3-0 win at Robert Morris - the first time the Pioneers had ever beaten the Colonials - she had nine kills and hit .316 with seven digs, an ace and a service error. She closed out the week with six kills and 12 digs in a 3-0 win at Saint Francis (PA). She leads the Pioneers in digs this season with 319.

 

NEC Rookie of the Week

Elise Sage, Sacred Heart

Fr., OH, Greenwood Village, CO/Cherry Creek

Sage helped the Pioneers to a perfect 3-0 week, collecting 18 kills, 13 digs, four assists, two block assists, and five service aces en route to her second NEC Rookie of the Week accolade. She made just two attack errors all week hitting an impressive .533. On Saturday, when the Pioneers defeated Robert Morris 3-0 for the first time in school history, Sage had seven kills, four digs and an assist. She followed that up with six kills, five digs, four aces and an assist in a 3-0 NEC win at Saint Francis (PA). Sage leads the Pioneers in hitting this season at .313.

 

 

 

Around The League:

 

Making History: Long Island sophomore Chelsey Stanton (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) tallied 35 digs in the win over CCSU setting a new LIU single-match record. Sacred Heart’s win over RMU was a first for the women’s volleyball program. Not only did it mark the first victory over the Colonials, it was the first time the Pioneers had even taken a set from RMU. Saint Francis (PA) senior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) passed former teammate Keshia Gibbs for fourth place on the school’s career rally scoring era kills list. Fun Facts: Bryant sophomore Maria Scocca (Melrose, MA/Arlington Catholic) passed the 300-kill mark and 100-block mark on the season with her weekend totals as she added 40 kills and a team-best 16 blocks (1 solo, 15 assists). Central Connecticut State freshman Emily Cochran (Adel, IA/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) recorded double-doubles in all three matches last week. Tournament Time: The 2009 NEC Women’s Volleyball Championship will be held on November 22 & 22 at the home of the high seed. The top four teams in the regular season will advance to the single elimination tournament.  The winner of the NEC Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

 

 

Team-by-Team Notes:

 

Bryant (9-16, 4-3 NEC)

The Bulldogs recorded three-straight wins topping St. Francis (NY) 3-1 and beating Quinnipiac twice 3-0. BU went 3-1 on the week and has won four of their last five matches, moving to above .500 (4-3) in conference play. Sophomore Maria Scocca (Melrose, MA/Arlington Catholic)passed the 300-kill mark and 100-block mark on the season with her weekend totals as she added 40 kills and a team-best 16 blocks (1 solo, 15 assists). Scocca also served up a team-high nine aces. Sophomore Jazmin Stoner (Durango, CO/Durango) collected a team-best 43 kills on the week, including posting 18 in a win over SFNY. Freshman Macy Mitravich (Waimanalo, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) posted 32 kills for third-best on the team and to lead all rookies, adding four blocks, three aces and 40 digs. Mitravich and senior setter Adriana Fuertes (Miramar, Puerto Rico/Academia del Perpetuo Socorro) each recorded a double-double on the week; Mitravich’s coming by way of 12 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac and Fuertes’s coming in an 18-assist, 10-dig performance against the Terriers. Fuertes and senior Julie Geonnotti (Eden Prairie, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret’s) split the setting duties, collecting 68 and 67 assists, respectively. Fuertes added four aces and 27 digs while Geonnotti chipped in 17 kills, three aces, 32 digs and four blocks. Rookie Emily Kaup (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol) and junior Adrienne Boss (Dracut, MA/Central Catholic) each posted double-digit block totals with 15 and 14, respectively. BU travels to Fairleigh Dickinson Oct. 24 before heading to Sacred Heart Oct. 25.

 

Central Connecticut (12-10, 6-1 NEC)

CCSU recorded a 2-1 week, defeating Providence and St. Francis (NY) before falling to defending Northeast Conference Champion Long Island. Central took care of the visiting Friars in four sets on Wednesday, swept the Terriers on Saturday and then took the Blackbirds, who are undefeated in NEC play, to five sets on Sunday. Emily Cochran (Adel, IA/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) recorded double-doubles in all three matches to lead CCSU during the week. The freshman led the Blue Devils in kills in both wins of the week. She tallied 15 kills and 11 digs in CCSU’s victory over Providence, came back with career highs of 18 kills and 19 digs in the sweep of SFNY, and then recorded 12 kills and 11 digs in the loss to LIU. In the match with SFNY she also finished with a career high .531 hitting percentage to lead Central to victory. Senior captain Jamie Baumert(Elkhorn, NE/Elkhorn) led Central in kills against the Blackbirds tallying 18 while adding five blocks.  She finished with 13 kills on .423 hitting percentage against St. Francis (NY) and was in double-digits again in the first match of the week, recording 10 kills and three blocks against Providence. CCSU will next play at non-conference foe Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m.

 

Fairleigh Dickinson (3-18, 0-5 NEC)

The Knights had two conference matches this week, falling to Saint Francis (PA) 3-1 on Saturday and Robert Morris 3-0 on Sunday. Against the Red Flash, freshman Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) led the Knights with 15 kills, while classmateVioleta Slabakova (Shelby Township, MI/Utica) added 10. Sophomore Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) had 38 assists and classmate Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) had a team-high 25 digs. Senior Ali Philbrick (Lanham, MD/Elizabeth Seton)added 10 digs. Slabakova and sophomore Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) each had three block assists. Versus the Colonials, Wheeler and Philbrick led the Knights, each with six kills. Willey had 16 assists, Semler recorded a team-high 15 digs and Wheeler, Slabakova and Berkland each posted a block. The Knights are back in action on Wednesday at Sacred Heart.

 

Long Island (11-13, 8-0 NEC)

Playing without a true setter, Long Island had its six-match winning streak snapped at Hofstra on Oct. 13 with a 3-0 loss. The Blackbirds got back on the winning side of the ledger on Oct. 17, making easy work of NEC-newcomer Bryant with a sweep. Senior Martina Racic (Pula, Croatia/School of the Arts) led all players with 15 kills. Racic was one of three Blackbirds with double figures in kills with a match-high 22 as Long Island battled Central Connecticut State in a matchup of the league’s last two unbeaten teams. After taking the first set, the Blue Devils dealt the Blackbirds their first set loss in NEC action this season before taking the third set to push Long Island to the brink of its first league loss of the year. The Blackbirds responded with a 29-27 win to force a fifth frame, which they won 15-12. The 3-2 win was a gutsy one for the Blackbirds, who captured sole possession of first place. Sophomore Chelsey Stanton (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) tallied 35 digs in the knock-down, drag-out affair, setting a new LIU single-match record. Senior Svetlana Simic (Klek, Serbia/Commercial School) held the previous mark, notching 33 digs at Albany on Sept. 27, 2008. LIU welcomes Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) this weekend before a four-game road swing.

 

Quinnipiac (3-20, 2-8 NEC)

The Bobcats began the week with a 3-2 home win against Holy Cross Tuesday before falling twice at Bryant over the weekend. Kelby Carey (Surfside, CA/Los Alamitos) led the Bobcats with 32 kills, 37 digs, six service aces and five blocks on the week. Carey began the week with her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the year. She compiled 14 kills and 17 digs in the Bobcats’ victory against Holy Cross before contributing 13 kills and 10 digs at BU. She added a third double-digit dig performance with 10 to close out the week at BU. Alyssa Naylor (San Diego, CA/Scripps Ranch) added 24 kills on the week, while Kayla Lawler (Richmond, IN/Centerville) had a team-high 86 assists. Logan Riker (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) contributed a team-best 41 digs despite playing the Holy Cross match as an outside hitter. The Bobcats are idle for the next 10 days, returning to action Oct. 29 at Sacred Heart.

 

Robert Morris (8-16, 5-2 NEC)

Robert Morris finished the week going 2-1 in league play. They topped Saint Francis (PA) on Wednesday in a come from behind 3-2 win. Middle blockers Hannah Veith (Columbus, OH/Worthington) and Amanda Graham (Melbourne, FL/Eau Gallie) led the squad with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Veith tallied a match-high hitting percentage of .667 and Graham added a match-high seven blocks. Corinne Moser (Meyersdale, PA/Meyersdale) captured a career-high 22 digs in the win. In RMU’s defeat to Sacred Heart Graham led the team with nine kills on a .389 hitting percentage and added eight blocks. In RMU’s win against Fairleigh Dickinson Veith registered another match-high hitting percentage of .643 and led the team with nine kills. Sophomore setter Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, CA/Ramona) led the squad with 17 digs. The Colonials head to New York this weekend to take on Long Island and St. Francis (NY).

 

Sacred Heart (14-7, 4-1 NEC)

The Pioneers had a perfect 3-0 week with 3-0 wins over Hartford, Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA). SHU hit .368 as a team in the three matches last week, averaging over 14 kills per set. In the win over Hartford, the Pioneer attack was nearly flawless. SHU compiled 27 kills over two sets without committing an error. They finished the match with 43 kills and just three errors, hitting .455 in 88 total attempts. The win over RMU was a first for the women’s volleyball program. Not only did it mark the first victory over the Colonials, it was the first time the Pioneers had even taken a set from RMU. Sophomore Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) moved from libero to outside hitter last week, filling in for injured teammate Maile Hetherington and she responded in a big way, collecting 32 kills. She hit an impressive .421 and also compiled 31 digs, two solo blocks and a pair of service aces. Sophomore Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA/Temecula) had six aces last week, extending her team-leading total to 35.

 

St. Francis (NY) (2-16, 1-7 NEC)

SFNY fell to Central Connecticut State and Bryant this weekend. On Saturday, the Terriers were defeated in straight sets by the NEC-leading Blue Devils where junior Anisa Lila (Thessaloniki, Greece/Palm Beach CC) recorded 9 kills and 12 digs to lead the squad. The Terriers won the first set against Bryant on Sunday, 25-23, but dropped the next three. Lila and Detelina Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Jacksonville University) recorded 12 kills, while Liliana Rodriguez (Linden, NJ/Linden) added 17 digs. The Terriers will host Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday and Robert Morris on Sunday.

 

Saint Francis (PA) (5-18, 2-5 NEC)

SFPA ended a six-match homestand in which they went 2-4. Senior Shirley Miller (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) passed former teammate Keshia Gibbs for fourth place on the school’s career rally scoring era kills list. She now has 905 kills and is inching closer to the 1000-kill mark for her career. Classmate Rikki Myers (Noblesville, IN/Westfield) has 2,702 assists and needs just 115 more to pass Kelly Snee for the school’s career record. Rookie Lauren Wingard (York, PA/Dallastown Area) has wrested the team lead in aces from Miller, thanks to her five aces last week. The Red Flash will travel to New York this weekend to take on the St. Francis (NY) Terriers and the Long Island Blackbirds. The last meeting between the Blackbirds and the Red Flash took place in the 2008 Northeast Conference Finals where LIU came out on top.

Offensive:

Emily Hughes, MB, Jr., 5'11

Memphis, Tenn. - Southeast Missouri

 

Hughes tallied 4.83 kills per set last week while only recording one attack error as the Redhawks went 2-0. She finished with a match-best 16 kills and set a season-high with a .536 attack percentage as she committed just one attack error on 28 swings in a 3-0 victory over SIU Edwardsville. Hughes accounted for a match-high 17.5 points after also chipping three block assists to lead all players. In the win over Eastern Illinois, she did not commit an attack error as she posted a match-high 13 kills. She finished with a .464 attack percentage and four block assists to lead all players.

 

Defensive:

Kayleah Sauer, DS, So., 5'6

Louisville, Ky. - Murray State

 

Sauer finished the match against Austin Peay one dig shy of the 30 mark. She added 21 digs versus Tennessee State while also tallying a career-high three service aces.  She finished the week with 50 digs.

 

Setter:

Brooke Schumacher, S, Jr., 5'7

Lake In the Hills, Ill. - Jacksonville State

 

Schumacher averaged 13.0 assists per set last week as she helped the Gamecocks post a .281 hitting percentage. She dished out 55 assists in the win over Morehead State and posted 49 assists in the three-set sweep of EKU. She averaged 16.3 assists per set versus the Colonels. She assisted on all 19 kills for JSU in the first set versus EKU which saw JSU record no errors and hit .633. She also dropped to the back row and picked up 22 digs for a pair of double-doubles.

 

2009 Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Team Notes

 

Austin Peay (8-2 OVC; 14-6 overall): Austin Peay fell to Murray State (25-15, 21-25, 16-25, 25-27) before defeating UT Martin (25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23) last week. The loss to the Racers marked the Lady Govs' first road defeat of the season. Senior Stephanie Champine tallied 16 kills in the loss at Murray State and followed that up with 18 versus UT Martin to run her streak of double-digit kills to 16 matches. Junior Jessica Mollman continued her steady season-long improvement, recording 10-plus kills in both matches. She recorded 11 kills at Murray State and a season-high 12 against UTM. Junior Sarah Alisaleh registered 89 assists last week, including 52 in the match with the Skyhawks. The Lady Govs conclude a four-game road trip on Tuesday at SIU Edwardsville before returning home to host Eastern Illinois on Friday and Southeast Missouri on Saturday. Eastern Illinois (1-10 OVC; 8-16 overall): Eastern Illinois fell to Southeast Missouri (18-25, 18-25, 19-25) before snapping a nine-match losing streak with a win over SIU Edwardsville (26-28, 25-21, 25-12, 25-23). Sophomore Melaine Boykins and junior Alex Zwettler each finished the week with 23 kills. Zwettler had 31 digs for the week while Boykins chipped in 12. Eastern Kentucky ( 4-6 OVC; 4-15 overall):  Eastern Kentucky had its two match winning streak snapped as the Colonels fell to Tennessee Tech (22-25, 19-25, 17-25) and Jacksonville State (18-25, 19-25, 17-25) last week. Junior Abby O'Connor tallied 14 digs versus Tennessee Tech to move into the school's career top-10 list. Also against Tech, junior Autumn Harms had a team-high 14 kills and two block assists while junior Kelsey Rose contributed a match-best 17 digs. In the match against JSU, junior Lauren Snyder led the Colonels with 10 kills while Harms finished with five kills and hit. 308. O'Conner contributed a team-high 14 digs versus the Gamecocks. Eastern Kentucky will travel to Morehead State on Thursday and host SIU Edwardsville on Saturday.  Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.

 

Jacksonville State (11-0 OVC; 18-5 overall): Jacksonville State improved to 11-0 in OVC action with wins over Morehead State (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10) and Eastern Kentucky (25-18, 25-19, 25-17). Freshman Alyx Schulte had the best weekend of her young career as she tallied 29 kills and hit .393. In the win over Morehead State, Schulte registered a career-high 16 kills and a career-best 20 digs. Sophomore Lauren Harkins had 49 kills over the two matches, including 30 in the win over Morehead State. Junior Brooke Schumacher averaged 13.0 assists per set last week. She had 49 assists versus Eastern Kentucky, including assisting on all 19 of JSU's kills in the first set versus the Colonels. Morehead State  (8-3 OVC; 15-7 overall):  Morehead State dropped matches at Jacksonville State (25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 10-15) and Tennessee Tech (22-25, 14-25, 25-18, 18-25) over the weekend. Senior Kristina Schoo recorded her 2,000th career dig against Jacksonville State, marking a feat that only four other players in the history of the OVC have done. With 22 more digs against Tech, Schoo now sits only 56 shy of the school career record of 2,082. Sophomore Emma Keough hit .429 and led the team with 25 kills. Freshman Annie Grueschlaeger upped her league-leading block total to 113. She had 10 total blocks at Jacksonville State. Morehead State hosts Eastern Kentucky on Thursday and SIU Edwardsville on Friday. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.

 

Murray State (5-5 OVC;  5-15 overall):  Murray State picked up wins over Austin Peay (15-25, 25-21, 25-16, 27-25) and Tennessee State (25-16, 25-23, 25-15) last week. Junior Becca Lamb led the team in kills (15) and hitting percentage (.455) against Austin Peay. She recorded her first career service aces against the Lady Govs and followed that up with one against the Tigers. Sophomore Kayleah Sauer finished the APSU match one dig shy of 30 and added 21 against Tennessee State. Sophomore Jade Guo dished out 80 assists over the two matches while junior Sara Hayden registered a career-best .750 attack percentage against TSU. Senior Cassie Cheney returned to action against Austin Peay after missing 12 matches due to injury. The Racers will host Tennessee Tech on Friday and Jacksonville State on Saturday.

 

Southeast Missouri (4-6 OVC; 8-12 overall): Southeast Missouri defeated SIU Edwardsville (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) and Eastern Illinois (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) last week. The Redhawks recorded a season-best .250 attack percentage against Eastern Illinois. Junior Emily Hughes recorded just one attack error over the two matches. She led all players with 16 kills and hit a season-best .536 versus SIUE. Senior Molly Davis had 30 digs last week and has now recorded double-digits in digs in all but one match this season. Junior setter Kelly Benacka averaged 13.33 assists per set last week, including dishing out 43 in the match with EIU. Senior Karleigh DeLong averaged 4.17 kills while junior Claire Keaton chipped in 4.33 digs per set last week. Southeast Missouri will host Southern Illinois on Tuesday before traveling to Tennessee State on Friday and Austin Peay on Saturday.

 

SIU Edwardsville ( 1-19 overall): SIU Edwardsville dropped matches to Southeast Missouri (20-25, 23-25, 19-25) and Eastern Illinois (28-26, 21-25, 25-12, 25-23) last week. Junior Karie Downing recorded 19 kills and 20 digs last week. Senior Tiffany Turner tallied 34 digs, including 26 versus Eastern Illinois. The Cougars have a busy week ahead as they have three matches including a pair of road contests. SIUE will host Austin Peay on Tuesday before traveling to Morehead State on Friday and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Tennessee State (2-7 OVC; 3-18 overall): Tennessee State was swept by UAB (23-25, 24-26, 17-25) before going 1-1 in OVC action last week. The Tigers defeated UT Martin (25-20, 25-19, 25-18) and fell to Murray State (16-25, 23-25, 15-25).  Sophomore Shaquita Williams tallied 30.5 points and had double-digit kills in two of the three matches last week, including 13 in the win over UT Martin. Junior Santia Sanders registered a season-best 22 digs against UAB to finish with 39 for the week. Senior Yamari Padilla-Collazo had 79 kills, 22 digs, 10 kills and 12.5 points over the three matches last week. Tennessee State will host Southeast Missouri on Friday and Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

 

Tennessee Tech (7-4  OVC; 8-12 overall):  Tennessee Tech defeated Eastern Kentucky (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) and Morehead State (25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18) last week. In the win over EKU, junior Leah Meffert averaged 6.0 kills per set. She finished the week with 33 kills on a .284 attack percentage. Junior Katie Kenline recorded 15 digs versus Eastern Kentucky and followed that up with 27 in the Morehead State match. She extended her double-digit dig streak to 18 matches. Junior Melanie Culp dished out 81 assists to help the Golden Eagles hit .261 last week. Tennessee Tech will travel to Murray State on Friday and UT Martin on Saturday. UT Martin (2-9 OVC; 7-14 overall): UT Martin dropped a trio of matches last week, falling to Memphis (23-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 14-16), Tennessee State (20-25, 19-25, 18-25) and Austin Peay (17-25, 25-23, 16-25, 23-25).  Junior Jenna Kragt tallied 24 kills last week, including 13 against Memphis. Sophomore Britany Wilburn registered 16 blocks over tea three matches. She recorded a career-best nine rejections against Austin Peay. Sophomore Jenna Miller dished out 115 assists on the week while also picking up 27 dig. Against Memphis, she tallied 44 assists and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year while also recording a career-best four blocks. UT Martin will host Jacksonville State on Friday and Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.TV.

Week 9: Southland Conference Women's College Volleyball Team News

Sam Houston State owns the Southland's longest current win streak at seven matches, its best stretch since the 1994 Bearkat squad won 11 in a row. The 7-1 conference record is the best start for Sam Houston State since joining the Southland in 1986.

Sam Houston has moved into first place in the West Division and has outscored its opponents 21-7 in the previous seven matches including three sweeps.

During the Bearkats win streak, senior Anna Ferguson, leads the league with 180 kills, ranks third with 3.91 kills per set and her .331 hitting percentage ranks third.

Sophomore Carli Kolbe, the current Southland kills leader (339), ranks fourth with 173 kills. Freshman Michelle Miller leads the league with 522 assists and ranks second with 10.65 per set.

Sophomore Kim Black ranks third with 45 blocks including four solo and is seventh with 1.05 blocks per set.

During the win streak, Kolbe leads the league with nine double-doubles and has a Southland best 14 on the year.


SFA Coach Debbie Humphrey Wins 500th Career Match
In a five-set win over the visiting UTSA Roadrunners, Stephen F. Austin Coach Debbie Humphreys won her 500th career victory.

The win puts Humphreys in elite company nationally as she is one of only 35 active coaches in the nation to have 500 career wins, which is only about 10 percent of all teams in the country.

She is the first Southland coach to reach 500 wins as a member of the league and is the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Southland.


Central Arkansas Unbeaten in Conference Play
Central Arkansas is the only unbeaten team in conference play with an 8-0 mark against league opponents marking the best start by the Sugar Bears as a member of the Southland.

During conference play the Sugar Bears have outscored league members by a combined 24-7 including three sweeps.

With senior Evaree Franklin hitting a league-leading .347 and junior Chloe Smith ranked second with 328 kills, UCA leads the Southland with a .248 team hitting percentage and ranks second with 1,063 kills.

Central Arkansas leads the Southland with 12.71 assists per set due in large part to senior Robyn Smith's league-high 802 assists thus far this season.

Central Arkansas senior Robyn Smith is the current league leader in assists with 802 and in per set at 11.30.

Smith has led the Southland in assists in each of the last two seasons with 1,387 (12.50) in 2007 and 1,255 (11.11) in 2008, receiving setter of the year honors last season.

If Smith continues on her current pace she will be the first player in Southland history to lead the league in assists for three consecutive seasons. 


Carli Kolbe Leads League with 14 Double-doubles
Sam Houston State sophomore Carli Kolbe leads the Southland with 14 double-doubles. The league's current kills leader (322), Kolbe has recorded a double-double against 13 different opponents this season with two coming against Lamar in conference play. In those 14 matches, Kolbe has 226 kills and 171 digs for a 16.14 kills and 12.21 digs average. Kolbe's 28 kills vs. Texas State are the most by a player in a conference match this season.


Sarah Cartie Nearing 4,000 Career Assists
McNeese State senior Sarah Cartie needs 14 assists to become the third player in Cowgirl history to cross the 4,000 career assists barrier.

Cartie currently ranks third in McNeese history with 3,986. She has 655 assists thus far this season and ranks second in the Southland with 9.78 assists per set. 


Adrianne Meengs Records Second Triple-Double
Lamar senior Adrianne Meengs recorded her second triple-double of the season and seventh of her career against Nicholls in a 3-2 win October 14.

Meengs has posted both of the Southland's triple-doubles this season and is one of seven players in NCAA Division I with two triple-doubles this year.

WEEK EIGHT REVIEW 

Colorado State (16-3, 8-0 MWC) extended its lead in the Conference standings with sweeps of BYU and Utah last week, as the first half of league play came to an end. With a win in its lone match of the week vs. UNLV, TCU (17-5, 6-2 MWC) moved into a tie for second with Utah (13-7, 6-2 MWC), who split its two matches. BYU (10-9, 5-3 MWC) and New Mexico (13-7, 4-4 MWC) remain fourth and fifth in the standings, respectively, while San Diego State (8-10, 3-5 MWC) and UNLV (5-11, 3-5 MWC) are tied for sixth. Wyoming (10-12, 1-7 MWC) and Air Force (8-12, 0-8 MWC) are correspondingly in eighth and ninth.

 

WEEK NINE PREVIEW 

The second half of the 2009 Conference season begins Thursday with three matches on the slate. First-place and 25th-ranked Colorado State visits TCU, while UNLV hosts San Diego State and New Mexico welcomes Wyoming. The CSU-TCU contest will air via same-day tape delay on The Mtn. at 8:30 p.m. CT. Friday night will see the second Deseret First Duel match of the season as BYU hosts Utah. Saturday’s schedule will see Air Force at UNLV, No. 25 Colorado State at New Mexico and Wyoming at TCU. In non-conference action, Air Force will host Northern Colorado on Wednesday, while San Diego State travels to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday.

The Conference race reaches the halfway point this weekend with WASHINGTON looking to keep its lead in the standings as it travels across the state to square off against rival WASHINGTON STATE... For the sixth straight week at least seven Pac-10 teams are ranked among the AVCA Top 25 - No. 4 WASHINGTON, No. 6 STANFORD, No. 12 OREGON, No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 CALIFORNIA, No. 16 ARIZONA, and No. 18 USC. • Around the League... ARIZONA snapped a 17-match conference road losing streak with a four-set win at rival Arizona State. JR OH Whitney Dosty paced the Wildcats with 19 kills, hitting .467, and adding 10 digs. During Arizona’s three-match win streak, Dosty has tallied 44 kills (3.67 kps). JR S Paige Weber has started all 80 matches during her career and has played all 278 sets.. ARIZONA STATE will look to snap a six-match losing streak. If it wins the first set, there’s a good chance the Sun Devils could snap that streak as they are 9-0 this season after winning the first set... CALIFORNIA’s three-set sweep over Oregon State gave coach Rich Feller his 500th career victory... OREGON SR MB Neticia Enesi hit a combined .558 with 32 kills (4.00 kps) and just three errors in wins over No. 14 California (hit .667) and No. 5 Stanford (hit .514) . The win over Stanford was the first for the Ducks since 1989, and the third ever.... Despite dropping six of seven sets in a pair of losses to the Bay Area schools, OREGON STATE hung tough, averaging 22.1 points in the seven sets. With 1,715 kills, SR OH Rachel Rourke needs 48 kills to set the OSU career mark.... STANFORD JR L Gabi Ailes tallied 59 digs (6.56 dps) in two matches last weekend, including a school-record 32 digs at Oregon. Ailes has played in 309 consecutive sets - every possible set during her career. JR OH Cassidy Lichtman recorded her sixth triple-double of the season with 17 kills, assists and digs at Oregon. She leads the team with 12 double-doubles in 17 matches.... UCLA SO MB Amanda Gil tallied 14 blocks (2.00 bps) in a split with the Washington schools. Gil leads the nation in blocks, averaging 1.83 bps, and tops the Pac-10 by nearly half a block over Cassie Robbins of Washington State  (1.36 bps).... USC has lost four in a row for the first time since dropping five straight in 1990. SO OH Alex Jupiter posted 45 kills (5.63 kps) in a pair of losses to the Washington schools. She’s posted a double-double in four of the last five matches.. WASHINGTON JR OH Kindra Carlson tallied 36 kills (4.00 kps), 18 in each win over UCLA and USC, as well as 29 digs (3.22 dps). SR L Tamari Miyashiro has played every set possible during her Husky career - 401 sets... WASHINGTON STATE knocked off No. 16 USC for its third win over a ranked opponent this season. The win pushed the Cougars’ record to 4-4 in Pac-10 play. WSU won a total of four matches in Pac-10 play the past two seasons combined. SO OH Meagan Ganzer continues to have the hot hand for the Cougars as she’s led the team in kills in six of the last seven matches, posting 93 kills (3.72 kps).

Week 9: Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Team News

Halfway through the league schedule, the top four teams in the standings are separated by just four games, with a three-way tie for fifth-place.  UNI will begin the second-half of the conference slate with a league-leading perfect 9-0 record, while Missouri State sits in a lock for second with a record of 8-1.  Wichita State improved to 6-3 after tallying one Valley win last weekend, while Drake holds down the fourth position midway through the conference schedule at 5-4.  Evansville, Illinois State and Creighton are in a deadlock for the fifth position with 4-5 records.

In this week's AVCA Coaches' Poll, UNI takes a leap in the "Others Receiving Votes" category, tallying 45 total points, after collecting league wins over Missouri State and Wichita State, as the Panthers won their 16th-straight match.  The Bears of Missouri State also remain in this week's poll among "Others Receiving Votes," garnering seven points in the poll, marking the fourth-straight week to receive recognition in the poll.

On the conference calendar, Southern Illinois and Evansville will host Bradley and UNI, Creighton and Drake will greet Illinois State and Indiana State, while Missouri State will travel to Wichita State in a matchup of the Valley's second and third place teams.

This week, just two matches dot the non-conference slate.  Southern Illinois travels to Cape Girardeau, Mo., this Tuesday to take on SEMO, while Missouri State makes the trip to Fort Wayne, Ind., to challenge IPFW.
