Charlotte Team Announces Initial Signing Class for Volleyball
CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte 49ers added three volleyball signees to begin with the team this fall. Head coach Chris Redding announces the addition of Christina Drake, Kiara Gilbert and Amanda Videmsek to the 2010 squad.
“Our staff has worked extremely hard and I am very excited about our third recruiting class,” said Charlotte head coach Chris Redding.
“I feel with the addition of this class, we now have competition and depth at every position on the court to make us a very dangerous team in 2010. Besides the volleyball talent that we are getting, I am more impressed by the heart and personality that these three will add to the team. They have the character that we look for in successful student-athletes.”
Drake is a libero and defensive specialist from Greer, S.C., who played with Club South Volleyball Club and at Riverside High. The Warriors won four-straight Regional Championships during her time there, including a 10-0 regional record in 2009 (16-5 overall). She was an All-State and All-Region performer last fall, and was chosen to play in the All-Star game at the end of the season. In the classroom, she was a National Beta Club member during her four years of high school. She plans to major in civil engineering.
“Chrissy is a great addition to our team from a ball-control perspective,” noted Redding.
“She is a solid passer, and a very intense defensive player. When she joins the team this fall, she will immediately add spark to our back court.”
Gilbert hails from Newark, N.J., and was a middle hitter and right side hitter for the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club and the Science Park Chargers, which won the Regional Championships in 2009. Science Park finished 23-5 last season as Gilbert racked up 85 blocks, the highest block total in New Jersey last season, and 214 kills, the second-most for a player in the Garden State. She was a First-Team All-Conference and All-County selection, and was voted Best Defensive Player on her squad for the past two seasons.
“The addition of Kiara brings us another big, physical front row player to the squad,” said Redding. “Kiara is someone who is going to exponentially improve over the course of her career here, and someone we will look to develop into an impact front row player.”
Videmsek was a middle hitter at Beaumont School in Highland Heights, Ohio. She was a First-Team All-District member in 2009, following up a Second-Team honor as a junior. Amanda plays for Cleveland Volleyball Company and her under-17 squad finished as 2009 National Champions in Miami, where she was named to the All-Tournament team at the National Tournament. She plans to major in exercise science.
“Amanda is an extremely fast and versatile player,” added Redding.
“One of Amanda’s strongest qualities is that she is a six-rotation middle hitter, something you don’t see to often at this level. We will look for Amanda’s versatility and experience to impact our team immediately.”
After a two-year absence, the 49ers returned to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2009 by finishing as one of the top six teams in the league. Charlotte has ten players on the roster returning for the 2010 season, which begins on August 27th in a weekend tournament at East Carolina.

Women's College Volleyball Defensive Skill: Purdue Team Defense
My impression is...that she's looking at the floor (and worried about her dive or her roll) instead of looking at the ball. She's already ready to fall and its much too early to do that because she hasn't even contacted the volleyball, yet.
She has time to take a couple more steps to get underneath the ball before she starts her fall, her roll, her dive to the floor.
Great college volleyball defense picture, though...

I love this shot. You can see the hitter watching the call from her setter. The setter calling the play and the middle blocker telling her front row and her teammates where the hitters are. Great catch!
