GIRLS GRANTED OPPORUNITY TO PLAY
The Women’s Sports Foundation Gives $183,000 to Community Groups
with Girls’ Sports Programs
NEW YORK, December 11, 2008 - The Women’s Sports Foundation gave a total of $183,000 in grants to more than 30 organizations nationwide this year through its GoGirlGo! National Grant program. The grants were awarded to groups nationwide that provide opportunity for girls to participate in sports and physical activity.
The funding comes on the heels of the Foundation’s release of its most recent study “Go Out and Play: Youth Sports in America,” which reports, among other findings, that urban girls do not receive as many opportunities to play sports as their suburban counterparts. One of the grantees, JoAnn Smith of Girls for Gender Equity, was featured in a short video (view here: http://mnr.onthescene.com/wsf/equalplay.html) responding to the study’s findings.
“Where a girl lives or her financial circumstance shouldn’t deny her access to a healthy lifestyle,” said Women’s Sports Foundation President Aimee Mullins, also featured in the video. “GoGirlGo! is designed to build diversity, boost confidence, and reach every girl, no matter who she is.”
Established in 2001 by the Women’s Sports Foundation, the GoGirlGo! program has given more than $3 million to institutions providing more opportunity for girls. The mission of the program is to encourage girls to become physically active. Grants have been used to pay for athletic equipment, supplies, facility rental, league/tournament fees, travel, coaching, scholarships and/or program administration expenses for more than 900 organizations.
With funding from national sponsors Advanta Corp. and Gatorade, the Women’s Sports Foundation is able to provide cash grants as well as its award-winning educational curriculum at no cost to community organizations. Pennsylvania grant sponsor The Hershey Company, foundations and individual donors also support the Women’s Sports Foundation in its endeavor. Schools, nonprofits and community centers use the cash grants and curriculum to bring girls together on a regular basis for physical activity and education sessions on various health-related topics such as smoking, stress, body image and bullying.
