ANTEATERS HOSTS UCI CLASSIC: No. 22 UC Irvine (3-0) hosts the UCI Classic this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 4-5) at Crawford Court. ANTEATERS JUMP INTO AVCA POLL AT No. 22: UC Irvine, which received votes in the AVCA poll last week, jumped into the top 25 at No. 22 following a 3-0 outing at Nevada. It is the first time that UCI has been ranked since 1988.
NEWCOMERS MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Newcomers
Juliane Piggott (Newport Beach/UCLA), Kristin Winkler
(Los Altos/St. Francis HS) and Taylor Smith (Los
Altos/Archbishop Mitty HS) earned starting spots on the
team this past weekend and keyed the program its 3-0
start. Piggott led the team with 20 kills against California,
hitting .304 (20-6-46) in the process. The junior transfer
picked up 11 digs, second-highest on the team, and
recorded the team‘s lone solo stuff against the Golden
Bears.
Winkler started at libero and led the team with 12 digs
against Cal while recording a pair of service winners.
Winkler led the team against the Huskies with 20 digs and
added a service ace while recording 14 digs and an ace
against Nevada. The true freshman averaged 3.29 digs per
set and 0.29 aces over the weekend.
Smith led the team at the net, averaging 0.93 blocks per
set. The freshman shared the match-high with Hauser,
posting five block assists against California and totaling six
kills. She then added three blocks against UConn with five
kills and concluded the weekend with a match-high five
blocks against Nevada.
CROPPER TIES CAREER-HIGH IN KILLS: Junior Riley
Cropper (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) tied a career-high
with eight kills and hit .375 against the Huskies. The middle
blocker committed just two errors in 16 attempts to come
away with the team-high in percentage. Cropper also put
up three block assists against UConn and added three
more against the Wolf Pack.
SOUTO SCOOPS PERSONAL-BEST: Senior Lauren
Souto (Huntington Beach/Mater Dei HS) recorded
personal-bests twice in digs over the weekend, posting six
against UConn and then picking up seven in the win
against Nevada. The defensive specialist also served up
two aces against California last Friday for a personal-high
