AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn volleyball rising senior Alyssa Davis earned
the bronze medal as a member of the U.S. Women’s National A2 Red Team
at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships held at the Phoenix
Convention Center, May 29-June 1.

Davis, a 6-4 middle blocker from Oakland Park, Fla., was a part of the
24-member National A2 program that trained in Tempe, Ariz., May 24-28.
The group was then split into two 12-member rosters for the open
championships, the A2 Blue Team and A2 Red Team. The A2 Blue Team
captured the tournament gold medal.

“It was a great opportunity for me to play with and compete against
some of the best collegiate players in the nation,” Davis said. “I
got a lot of practice playing against athletes my height and it really
helped me become stronger at the net.”

The group was selected from a group of athletes that participated in
the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 19-21 at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A total of 175
athletes were in attendance.

Davis will return for her senior year in 2010 as the squad looks to
improve on its 16-15 overall 2009 mark. The Tigers enjoyed its best
season in 10 years as the team finished second in the SEC West.

Both Dosty and Weber have been part of a training camp for the A2 national team in Tempe, Ariz. in preparation for the Open Division national championships which ran from May 29 – June 1 at the Phoenix Convention Center. 

 

The A2 roster was split into two 12-person teams yesterday with Weber and Dosty each playing for the “red” team.  The two Wildcats are the only Pac-10 players on the red team while Cal’s Carli Lloyd and Tarrah Murrey will play for the “blue” team.

 

The A2 players, all of whom have remaining collegiate eligibility for 2010, were selected as part of the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 19-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A record total of 175 athletes competed in the Open Tryout.

 

USA Volleyball will be showcasing its Open National Championships for the 81st year since the organization’s founding in 1928. The event is one of the largest national championships in any sport in the United States, and the Open has featured the sport of volleyball from coast-to-coast.

 

The 2010 USA Volleyball Open National Championships will have 557 teams participating with approximately 6,000 participants. The first session (May 29-June 1) will have 336 teams, while the second session (June 2-5) will have 221 teams. The second session, in which this team will be participating, will have 221 teams.

 

Admission is free to the USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Volleyball has tabbed Arizona’s Whitney Dosty (Tucson, Ariz.) and Paige Weber (Indianapolis, Ind.) among 24 players selected to lead its U.S. Women’s National A2 Program for 2010.

The 2010 U.S. Women’s National A2 program is scheduled to train May 24-28 in Tempe, Ariz., before being split into two 12-player rosters to compete in the Open Division of the 2010 USA Open National Championships held in nearby Phoenix. The Open Division flight takes place May 29-June 1 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Additional information on the tournament can be found at www.usavolleyball.org/events/2245.

Weber, a senior-to-be in 2010, served as the Wildcats’ captain in 2009, leading UA with a 10.75 assist-per-set ratio.  Weber also tallied 2.09 digs, 0.45 blocks and 0.65 while starting all 110 sets played for Arizona.  Her play was instrumental in leading Arizona back to the NCAA tournament.  The Indianapolis native also participated on the A2 National in 2009 and is one of four setters on the 2010 team.

Dosty, a Tucson, Ariz. native, was selected to the A2 team as an outside hitter.  In 2009, Dosty averaged 3.02 kills-per-set to go along with 1.46 digs and 0.56 blocks.  She’ll compete amongst the other nine outside hitters selected to the team. 

“I was very happy with the level of the tryout held in February and, as a result, we expect that this year’s A2 teams will be very strong in training and in competition at the USA Open National Championships,” U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “The future continues to look bright for the U.S. Women’s National Team with the talent coming up through the pipeline.

The 2010 U.S. Women’s National A2 Team includes four setters, 10 outside/opposite hitters, six middles and four liberos. The 24 players come from 18 different collegiate programs.

 “As we thought the open tryout in February was the best and deepest collection of athletes that we had seen at that event, we feel the same about this group of A2 athletes,” USA Volleyball Managing Director of Indoor High Performance Tom Pingel said. “I'm already looking forward to watching this group in training and the Open Championships.”

AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn volleyball junior Alyssa Davis made a big step
in her volleyball career, earning a chance to participate in the 2010
U.S. Women’s National A2 Program.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the national program,” Davis
said. “I’m very happy for this opportunity. This will give me
experience at a very high level and more to bring back to my team next
year.”

The 24-member National A2 program is set to train in Tempe, Ariz., May
24-28, and then will split into two 12-member rosters to compete in the
Open Division of the 2010 USA Open National Championships in Phoenix.
The Open Division is set to start May 29 and runs through June 1.

The group was selected from a group of athletes that participated in
the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 19-21 at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A total of 175
athletes were in attendance.

“This is very exciting for Auburn volleyball,” head volleyball
coach Wade Benson said. “Alyssa has really improved her skills and her
dedication is beginning to show in a big way.

Davis, a middle blocker from Oakland Park, Fla., led the 2009 Tiger
volleyball team and was ninth in the Southeastern Conference with a .315
hitting percentage. She finished with a career-best 161 kills on 368
attempts with just 45 errors. The 6-foot, 5-inch Davis was second on the
team in total blocks, tallying 72 on the season.

Davis will return for her senior year in 2010 as the squad looks to

Team will begin training May 24 in Tempe, Ariz.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Utah head volleyball coach Beth Launierehas been selected to serve as a head coach of the 2010 U.S. Women’s National A2 Program, USA Volleyball announced. This will be the second year in a row that Launiere will coach within the USA National Team system after serving as assistant coach for the USA in the 2009 Grand Prix Tournament last summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Taipei, Taiwan.

“I’m looking forward to this experience,” head coach Beth Launiere said. “There will be a lot of very talented volleyball players that will have the opportunity to train and compete together at a high level.”

The 2010 U.S. Women’s National A2 program is scheduled to train May 24-28 in Tempe, Ariz.

The team will then be divided into two 12-player rosters to compete in the Open Division of the 2010 USA Open National Championships in Phoenix, Ariz. The Open Division flight takes place May 29-June 1 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Michigan’s Mark Rosen was selected to be the head coach of the other 12-player squad.

“Competing in the open nationals will give us a chance to evaluate and measure each player in competition,” Launiere said. “The pipeline to the USA National Team is full of very good players. The A2 team provides them a path to continue their playing careers with USA volleyball and gives them the opportunity to show what they can do at this level.”

Launiere currently owns a 408-223 (.646) mark after her 20th season at Utah, the only school at which she has been head coach. She is a three-time AVCA West Region and MWC Coach of the Year.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Juliane Piggott (Newport Beach/UCLA) has been selected to compete on
the U.S. Women’s National A2 team by USA Volleyball.

 

Piggott, one of 24 players to make the roster, earned AVCA All-America honorable mention after posting 353 kills and was 10th in the Big West with a 3.15 kill average. The outside hitter recorded a team-high 13 solo blocks to go along with 39 block assists, finishing the season fourth in total blocks while adding 26 aces and 198 digs.
