Georgia State Volleyball Team’s Audrey Cantrell Named Peach of an Athlete
ATLANTA - Georgia State redshirt-junior volleyball student-athlete Audrey Cantrell was honored at the 26th annual Peach of an Athlete Role Model Banquet on Tuesday night. The awards program, sponsored by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, recognizes student-athletes who are positive role models.
To be honored with the award, which was given to 10 student-athletes at the Cobb Energy Center, one must either be a student-athlete who resides in the state of Georgia or be a student-athlete who participates in a sport at a university located in Georgia.
Cantrell, a native of Rockwell, Texas, set the single-season school digs record with last season, moving into the top five all-time in career digs. She also established a new digs per set record with 4.74, third best in the CAA, which shattered the old school mark of 4.45.
“The banquet was absolutely beautiful and could not have been a better night,” commented Cantrell. “From the rehearsal to the reception to the banquet, all the way to the closing, I was greeted and introduced to phenomenal people. The accomplishments of the other student-athletes, as well as the winner of the Bobby Jones award, Herman J. Russell Sr., was astonishing and I was extremely honored to be celebrated with them.”
During the season, Cantrell was named the tournament MVP of the Elon Invitational, while also earning all-tournament honors in the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge, won by Georgia State. She finished the year with double-digit dig totals in 27 of 30 matches, including a career-high and school four-set record of 36 in the final match of the season against William & Mary on November 15th.
Off the court, Cantrell earned the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award for the third straight year as she works on her degree in exercise science. She can also be found volunteering in the community and has worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta multiple times, while serving as a SAAC representative this season.
Recently, Cantrell participated in the USA Volleyball Olympic Try-outs, one of just 175 participants from throughout the country.
Last year, former Panthers Candace Gonzales and Felipe Carvalho were honored with the Peach of an Athlete Award, while football head coach Bill Curry received the Bobby Jones Award for his contributions as a positive role model. Previous winners of that prestigious award included Atlanta icons Hank Aaron, Ted Turner, Andrew Young and Furman Bisher.
Georgia State will return to the court as a part of the Atlanta Invitational on April 4th. The Panthers will open against Florida State at 9 a.m. on the center court of the GSU Sports Arena. The tournament will continue in bracket format with the Panthers playing at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena. All other matches will take place at Georgia Tech. Among the teams playing in the tournament are Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Troy, College of Charleston, South Alabama, Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State. www.GeorgiaStateSports.com

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team will see some familiar faces as it wraps up its 2010 spring season over the next few weeks.
The Panthers will face Loyola Thursday at 7 p.m. before playing in tournaments at Marquette (April 3) and Northwestern (April 17).
At Marquette, UWM will face Northwestern, Green Bay, UIC and the host Golden Eagles. Northern Illinois and UIC are then scheduled to join Milwaukee and the host Wildcats in Evanston.
The spring schedule provides the foundation for what should be another successful fall campaign for the Panthers, who return five of their seven starters from a year ago.
"The team is getting better and they are working very hard," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "This is the time of the year where conditioning and strength is really important and we intensify that. People are getting stronger, we're hitting harder and we're jumping higher."
UWM won 11 in a row late last season to rebound from a slow start and claim the league tournament title. Then, Milwaukee fell in five sets to Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling just short of a first-ever postseason win.
Now, the Panthers are using the spring to adjust to life without setter Kellye Zaporski and libero Lauren Felsing. But, with its top six offensive players returning, a host of defensive specialists ready for action at libero and an experienced setter in Samantha Trawitzke stepping in for Zaporski, UWM is excited for the season ahead.
"We're making progress. Some people are adding more shots and certain people are hitting harder than ever before," Johnson said. "The setting alone, with Sam, is just getting so good. She is a physical player and she is able to block, too. I think we're really getting ready for the fall"
UWM will again face a rigorous non-league slate in 2010. While the full schedule is not yet set, the Panthers do know they will open the season at the IPFW Tournament Aug. 27 and 28. That field will include three NCAA Tournament qualifiers (IPFW, Saint Louis and UWM) and a fourth team (Tulsa) that won 26 matches a season ago. Milwaukee will also host Wisconsin in September.

Wake Forest Volleyball Team Visits Brenner Children’s Hospital
Deacons continue a spring filled with community service
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – On Friday, March 26, members of the Wake Forest volleyball team visited the Brenner Children’s Hospital and lifted the spirits of a number of young kids.
A group of players walked the halls of the teenage ward, visiting room-to-room and handing out signed posters and beach balls. Another group hung out with a group of kids in a playroom, playing basketball, Nintendo Wii and doing arts and crafts. In all, the group spent almost four hours with the kids.
Below are some of the player’s reactions:
Rising-senior Lauren McIntyre
On the overall experience...
“It was really fun. It was neat to work with the kids and talk to them and let them take their minds off whatever they were going through for a little bit. It was just fun to joke around with them.”
On her favorite part of the visit...
“Just joking around with kids and getting to know them. When we’re here on campus, we’re kind of in our own little bubble and we don’t get to meet or interact with people that are that much younger than us. It was a lot of fun just to hang out with them.
Rising senior Kelsey Jones
On the experience...
“I thought it was an awesome experience. It was something we had been wanting to do for awhile. I like playing with little kids and helping them out. It seems really minor to us but it was something major to them.”
“One of the boys, Cody, just lit up when we got in his room. His mom told us he was excited all day after she told him we we’re coming. He had been down and not feeling well but when we were there, he had a smile on his face and wanted to get out of bed. That was so much fun to see.”
On being with the kids in the playroom...
“There was a little three year old in the playroom that was just full of energy. He would be drawing one minute and then jump right over and wanted to play with the ball the next. Then there were a couple of kids that had their IVs hooked-up and they were still playing basketball and dunking the ball. You couldn’t even tell anything was affecting these kids. It was just so much fun to hang out and play with them.
Rising sophomore Andrea Beck
On the experience of going to the Children’s Hospital...
“It was really great. I had never really been in a situation like that before, hanging out with little kids in the hospital. We got to hang out and got to be ourselves with them. After a while, we all felt pretty comfortable just hanging out with them. The kids were so adorable. They had their siblings there running around with them and they were all pretty energetic. The best part was just being able to play games with them and see how happy it made them.”
The volleyball program would like to make their visits to the hospital a more regular occurrence.
“Everyone had such a great time that I think we’re going to try to go back at least once a month,” said Wake Forest head coach Heather Kahl Holmes. “It looked like the kids really enjoyed us being there and I know it made an impact on the players’ lives as well.”
Visits to Brenner Children’s Hospital are just one of the many ways the Deacon volleyball program is giving back to the community. Earlier this winter, members of the team participated in Campus Kitchen where they delivered prepared meals to needy families. Two of the places the team visited was Grey’s Cottage and My Aunt’s House.
On April 8, the volleyball program will join other groups from around campus to participate in Project D.E.S.K. Now in its seventh year, the Discovering Education through Student Knowledge (D.E.S.K.) is an event which helps elementary students design and decorate their own personal desks.

“The Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series gives volleyball enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play in the big leagues,” said Joshua Fine, associate marketing manager of Barefoot Wine. “Not many people can quit their day job to travel and play competitively. This series helps people realize their dreams right there on the court.”
"They've proven to be leaders on and off the court," Badgers coach Pete Waite said. "These two stood out on the team after we had the players do a leadership survey at the end of last season where the players all rated each other in dozens of leadership categories.
Among the facilities at the complex are a purpose-built indoor arena, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor football pitches and a gym and fitness centre.
During the mid Atlantic Power League Tournament which was held at the Raleigh North Carolina Convention Center in February the Triangle Volleyball Club set a new World record for "most consecutive volleyball passes ---which was 110;
"Triangle Volleyball Club donated $1 for every registered participant in the attempt to the CLINTON BUSH HAITI FUND to aid the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. When combined with other donations the fund will receive in more than $500.
"It's my understanding the athlete tried to stand up and thought she was okay and collapsed again," said Marshall County Superintendent Trent Lovett. "That was when the other young ladies realized it was something pretty serious."
"The players there start at an earlier age," said Peifer. "They are all together. A lot of the teams we played against had been playing together on clubs for three years. There was a lot of excitement and they were cheering the whole time. More than we do. They are clapping and yelling and singing and they all help each other. My USA team had the same rotation as we use at Shelbyville, but I got to see different styles of play from European teams."
