“At 6-1 and in the setting position, Julia is an imposing presence along the net,” Kuwata said. “Her net play sets her apart from others in her position. She has a great feel for blocking, and is a tremendous tempo setter. Her past collegiate experience and the success she had at Missouri State is an exciting addition to our program.”
After redshirting the 2007 season at MSU, Cawthra stepped into the setter role late in the 2008 season and helped lead the Bears to a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship, earning All-Tournament honors. She finished the season averaging 4.63 assists per set. In 2009, Cawthra saw action in 65 sets, tallying 254 assists and 12 blocks, helping the Bears to a 21-10 overall record.
A native of Colorado, Cawthra was a two-year varsity letter winner at Lakewood High School where she helped to lead her to team the Alameda High School Tournament Championships her senior year.
