Sarah Gustin Named Head Coach at CSU San Marcos
"There is no one more deserving for the position than Sarah," said IU Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Sarah for the last six years, three at the College of Charleston and three here at Indiana. We will miss her greatly in our program, but we are happy for her success.
"This is a unique opportunity for Sarah to return to the West Coast and start a program. She will remain at IU for a few weeks as we go through the hiring process and will help with the transition before she makes her move west."
On the court, the Fontana, Calif., native oversaw the Hoosiers' defensive strategies and operation, helped develop and implement game plans, and played a large role in the development of IU Volleyball's first ever All-American, Ashley Benson. Off the court, Gustin managed all aspects of recruiting, evaluated prospective student-athletes and supervised the academic progress of several student-athletes.
"Leaving Indiana was not an easy decision," said Gustin. "I have a wonderful family at IU and I will miss them dearly. I am very grateful to Coach Dunbar and the administration for the opportunity to be a part of the volleyball program. My time here has prepared me to be a head coach back in my home state of California and I am excited about the new opportunity that awaits me there.
"The opportunity to start a program and be the first women's volleyball coach at CSUSM is remarkable. I am honored to be given this opportunity and look forward to working with the administration and other coaches to uphold the tradition of excellence that has already been established at San Marcos."
"Sarah's extensive recruiting contacts and high energy will be invaluable to starting our new volleyball program at CSUSM," said Athletic Director Tom Seitz. "We are thrilled to have her aboard."
The national search for Gustin's replacement has already begun.
